The Moral And Ethical Influence By The Christian Faith Community Upon The Non-Christian Population Of Harney County, Oregon, John D. Stauffer 2011 George Fox University

The Moral And Ethical Influence By The Christian Faith Community Upon The Non-Christian Population Of Harney County, Oregon, John D. Stauffer

Doctor of Ministry

The principal problem that this paper addresses is the diminishment of the Christian church‘s moral influence in Harney County, Oregon. The author asks two primary questions: (1) what are the role and the responsibility of the Christian faith community with respect to influencing the wider culture of Harney County, and (2) how should pastoral leaders of Harney County, Oregon facilitate collaborative efforts among their respective congregations to enhance the Christian faith‘s collective influence on our community.

Chapter One introduces the problem through a narrative based on the author‘s local ministry setting of Harney County. Chapter Two presents scriptural evidence to …

Spiritual Abuse : When The System Becomes The Persecutor, Gary R. Veenhuizen 2011 George Fox University

Spiritual Abuse : When The System Becomes The Persecutor, Gary R. Veenhuizen

Doctor of Ministry

Spiritual abuse is an extremely subtle issue in its early stages. Often one doesn’t recognize when they are a subject of abuse, or how they have been influenced in ways that are controlling and involve manipulation of behavior and thought. It should be understood that all institutional systems are vulnerable to manipulation by leadership, tradition or culture of the system or organization. I am proposing that it is possible that a system itself can be an abuser, inflicting spiritual control and manipulation on the organization, the leadership and members for future generations. I want to examine the earmarks of unhealthy …

Under One Umbrella: Multiple Communities, One Church, Timothy Jacob Gillespie 2011 George Fox University

Under One Umbrella: Multiple Communities, One Church, Timothy Jacob Gillespie

Doctor of Ministry

It is my claim that the need for alternative communities within established church structures is not only growing, but is also paramount to the continuation of the gospel of Jesus Christ into the post-Christian, post-Modern world. These alternative communities often take the form of "emerging" worship services, Young Adult services, and "churchwithin- a-church" expressions of worship and community. They are seen in large, medium, and small church settings; as such, we see many of the same problems to varying degrees. The search for relevance has led us to these communities, and this author sees them as valid expressions of faith …

Desert Living For Modern Day Ministers: Embracing The Life And Practice Of Desert Living In Ministry Today, Kaye L. McKinley 2011 George Fox University

Desert Living For Modern Day Ministers: Embracing The Life And Practice Of Desert Living In Ministry Today, Kaye L. Mckinley

Doctor of Ministry

Ministers spend most of their time assisting others through trouble and hardship, yet they are often unable to cope with their own personal struggles. In doing so, they neglect their own spiritual lives for the sake of others. This dissertation will explore the desert experiences of the past to determine if the desert metaphor holds value for ministers today as a place of healing and spiritual transformation. In biblical times, the desert was a literal place where people sought God and explored their life and faith. The Desert Fathers and Mother followed this example. Desert living is available for us …

We Are Who We Think We Were: Updating The Role Of Historiography In Christian Ethics, Aaron D. Conley 2011 University of Denver

We Are Who We Think We Were: Updating The Role Of Historiography In Christian Ethics, Aaron D. Conley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Christian ethicists often ground their claims on historical precedent. Unfortunately, this precedent is "accessed" using historical theories and methods taken ad hoc from a wider socio-historical Geist or are derived from their confessional commitments to their theological traditions. The results, however, are often the same--a universal projection of socially located historical truths that exclude, silence or discredit the histories and memories of marginalized communities. Up to now there has been little work done systematically relating current trends in historiography to the historical analyses operative among Christian social ethicists. This dissertation directly addresses the outdated historical methodologies in use in Christian …

Know Truth, Believe Truth, Live Truth: How Walking With Jesus Should Change Your World, Casie R. Neal

Honors Theses

Hi! I'm so glad you decided to pick up this study. Welcome to a project that is a result of several years of work, thought and experience. It has been put together for you with lots of love, and I hope you benefit from reading through it. I designed it for my honor's thesis project as a part of my graduation requirements. I chose it because I wanted to share some of the things God has taught me through walking with Him. When I was little, I always wanted to be a writer, and I guess this was my chance. …

High-Stakes Assessment: Is A Christian Ethic Of Care Possible?, Paul Shotsberger Ph.D. 2011 George Fox University

High-Stakes Assessment: Is A Christian Ethic Of Care Possible?, Paul Shotsberger Ph.D.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The No Child Left Behind Act, the 2002 reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), has fundamentally changed the landscape of education in the United States. Amidst the current debate over reauthorization of ESEA, it is vital that Christian educators consider the moral implications of continuing and expanding current policies, especially as they relate to high-stakes assessment and its impact on students and teachers. The focus of the article is the challenge a high-stakes environment poses for educators who truly desire to demonstrate a Christian ethic of care in their teaching and what Christian teacher education can do …

The Origin And Development Of The Johannine Egō Eimi Sayings In Cognitive-Critical Perspective, Paul N. Anderson 2011 George Fox University

The Origin And Development Of The Johannine Egō Eimi Sayings In Cognitive-Critical Perspective, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Th e long-held critical judgment that the I-am sayings of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel have no connection at all with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth is based primarily on the inference that they are entirely missing from the Synoptics. As a result, John has been expunged from Jesus research, assuming its patent ahistoricity; yet critical analyses have largely overlooked Johannine- Synoptic similarities. While the Johannine presentation of Jesus’ I-am sayings is indeed distinctive and highly theological, it cannot be claimed that either the I-am convention of speech or its predicate metaphors and themes are absent from the Synoptics. …

Divergent Responses To The Human Predicament: A Case Study In New Comparativism, Mark Toole 2011 University of Denver

Divergent Responses To The Human Predicament: A Case Study In New Comparativism, Mark Toole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The enterprise of comparison has been regarded by some as one of the most vital characteristics of a healthy academic study of religion. However, the failed legacy of Eliadian Comparativism has caused others to suggest that the art of comparison has not yet lived up to its promise. This study brings together the best tools of what the author calls "Smithian New Comparativism." In order to demonstrate concretely a rigorous and responsible critical comparative analysis, and to chart a course for future academically beneficial cross-cultural comparisons, this project presents a case study that compares two religious traditions' doctrinal responses to …

2010 Naps Presidential Address: "Fleeing The Kingdom": Augustin's Queer Theology Of Marriage, Virginia Burrus 2011 Syracuse University

2010 Naps Presidential Address: "Fleeing The Kingdom": Augustin's Queer Theology Of Marriage, Virginia Burrus

Religion - All Scholarship

Might attending to the texture of bodies in Augustine’s theology of marriage open up new interpretive possibilities? Eve Kosofky Sedgwick and Patricia Cox Miller give theoretical cues, Danuta Shanzer philological ones, for a dialogical reading of On the Good of Marriage and Confessions that seeks to defamiliarize, complicate, and broaden—in several senses, to queer—traditional interpretations of Augustinian marital theology. Shame and vulnerability, fear and desire, pain and pleasure, are all surfaced, as Augustine depicts marital figures that are shot through with ambivalence—open and torn, cut and bleeding, both cleaving to one another and ripped apart. Ultimately, he attempts to …
