The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan 2015 University of Brighton, England

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

In an attempt to identify a Quaker aesthetic as it applies to English meeting houses, this article draws upon the physical evidence of English Meetings past and present, upon the records of discussions preceding the design and construction of meeting houses, upon interviews with Friends at some thirty meeting houses and upon the observational and interpretative literature. The main part of the discussion is structured around the moral principles of plainness, worthiness and simplicity. A distinction is made between the effect of plainness, which has in the past been regulated, and simplicity, which is here explored as a moral attribute …

A Quaker Experiment In Town Planning: George Cadbury And The Construction Of Bournville Model Village, Adrian Raymond Bailey, John R. Bryson 2015 University of Exeter

A Quaker Experiment In Town Planning: George Cadbury And The Construction Of Bournville Model Village, Adrian Raymond Bailey, John R. Bryson

Quaker Studies

In 1893, George Cadbury initiated the construction of Bournville Model Village, Birmingham (UK). This was the first model settlement to provide low-density housing not restricted to facto1y employees. This paper examines the relationship between Cadbury's Quaker faith, the growth of his business and the development of a model community. The focus is on exploring the ways in which Cadbury departed from traditional Quaker practices, with respect to visual artistic display and religious intervention in social relations. The article, first, reviews the contribution of Quakerism to the building of George Cadbury's business empire. Second, it examines the relationship between Cadbury's religiously …

Gnostic Metaphysics In The Dynamics Of Foxian Light And The Reunion Of The Soul With God, Glen Reynolds 2015 Darlington, England

Gnostic Metaphysics In The Dynamics Of Foxian Light And The Reunion Of The Soul With God, Glen Reynolds

Quaker Studies

This paper analyses prior scholarship surrounding the emphasis upon, and interpretation of, the moral and ethical dynamic within the Light theology of George Fox, and advances it by suggesting a metaphysical approach which is remarkably similar to that found in Christian (Valentinian) Gnosticism. This similarity is particularly illustrated in an examination of Fox's theology pertaining to the nature and disposition of the divine soul and its reunion with God.

Did William Penn Diverge Significantly From George Fox In His Understanding Of The Quaker Message?, T. Vail Palmer Jr. 2015 Freedom Friends Church, Salem, Oregon, USA

Did William Penn Diverge Significantly From George Fox In His Understanding Of The Quaker Message?, T. Vail Palmer Jr.

Quaker Studies

Melvin Endy argues that George Fox and William Penn shared similar goals for Quakerism, and that in light of their close working relationship, scholars who argue for significant differences between Fox's and Penn's views of Quakerism must account for Fox's failure to criticise Penn's views. This paper proposes that the lynchpin of Fox's understanding of Quakerism was an empathetic reading of the Bible, so that the authority of Scripture was internalised. In Penn's writings, the Bible is appealed to as an external authority. Because Fox lacked sophistication in the relevant areas of thought, he was unable to identify the core …

Universalising And Spiritualising Christ's Gospel: How Early Quakers Interpreted The Epistle To The Colossians, Stephen W. Angell 2015 Earlham School of Religion, USA

Universalising And Spiritualising Christ's Gospel: How Early Quakers Interpreted The Epistle To The Colossians, Stephen W. Angell

Quaker Studies

This article examines seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Quaker methods of biblical interpretation, comparing them to Puritan and Spiritualist methods. The focus is on verses from the Pauline epistle to the Colossians frequently cited by early Quakers. In contrast to John Calvin and four seventeenth-century Puritan Biblical commentators, but similar to seventeenth-century Spiritualists such as William Erbery, Quakers argued strongly for a form of mystical universalism closely akin to Arminianism in their interpretation of this epistle. Quakers (especially John Woolman) resembled medieval Catholics in their willingness to interpret Col. 1.24 to assert that Christ's 'mystical' body, which could include contempora1y Christians, was …

His case went to the Supreme Court and even to the King before it was finally settled. He kept a …

Adolescent Quakers: A Hidden Sect?, Simon Best 2015 University of Birmingham, England

Adolescent Quakers: A Hidden Sect?, Simon Best

Quaker Studies

This paper uses British Quakers as a case study to illustrate how very different perspectives on group identity pertain between the adult group and Quaker youth. While the older Quakers see the young Quakers as a part of 'their' group, the adolescents do not feel the same level of affinity with older Quakers. This paper examines the sectarian nature of both groups and argues that while both groups have sect-like characteristics the sectarian nature of the two groups is differently configured. It argues that the adult group fa ils to acknowledge the adolescent group as a separate sect within the …

Elizabeth Bathurst's Soteriology And A List Of Corrections In Several Editions Of Her Works, Yasuharu Nakano 2015 University of Birmingham, England

Elizabeth Bathurst's Soteriology And A List Of Corrections In Several Editions Of Her Works, Yasuharu Nakano

Quaker Studies

Elizabeth Bathurst (1655-1 685) was one of few Quaker systematic theologians in the Restoration. Her soteriology showed a pattern of traditional Quakerism common to earlier and contemporary Quakers like Fox and Barclay. However, her theology created a different theological atmosphere from them, in that she stoutly insisted on the sole authority of the Light and on the infallibility of human beings guided by the Holy Spirit against mainstream Quakerism after the 1660s. The first part of this paper briefly introduces the soteriology of Bathurst together with her understanding of human nature. In the second part, many citation errors from the …

The Experience Of Regeneration And Erosion Of Certainty In The Theology Of Second-Generation Quakers: No Place For Doubt?, Nikki Coffey Tousley 2015 University ofDayton, Ohio, USA

The Experience Of Regeneration And Erosion Of Certainty In The Theology Of Second-Generation Quakers: No Place For Doubt?, Nikki Coffey Tousley

Quaker Studies

The convincement accounts of first- and second-generation Quakers reveal changes in the implicit, narrative theology of regeneration and revelation, despite a relatively consistent articulated theology. Early Friends experienced one, overarching grace that encompassed justification, sanctification and the restoration of creation, emphasizing the culminating experience of regeneration. Anxiety about election, inherited from Puritanism, was replaced with assurance grounded in an experience of victory over sin that both justified and sanctified, and conferred a new, immediate understanding of the truth. This understanding was a subjective, relational knowledge of God's presence that was only secondarily propositional. Without the broad vision linking justification and …
