I had the privilege of knowing Fr. Cyprian in multiple capacities: as a fellow Black Catholic priest and our membership in the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus; as a faculty colleague at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University (New Orleans); and as a fellow Black Catholic scholar and our membership in the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. Yet these are but only the formal settings of our professional relationships. More importantly and significantly, Cyprian was for me and many others a role model, a mentor, and even a legend. Theological Anthropology In The Theology Of Marriage And Family, Joseph S. Flipper

The Catholic Church is faced with the challenge of theologically interpreting families that have experienced divorce, remarriage, and children outside of wedlock. The anthropology of conjugal self-gift, though valuable as an analogy to the Trinitarian communion, makes the nuclear family into an ideal. Since fewer than half of children in the U.S. live in the “traditional family,” it remains a problematic ideal. I suggest that familial and marital situations outside of the norm—often seen as problems illustrative of the breakdown of marriage in contemporary society—may be regarded in another light. This paper explores the context in which the manuscript Theology: A Portrait in Black emerged and set the stage for those who were then and have continued to evolve as leaders in the Black Catholic Movement, among them, Dom. Cyprian Davis, O.S.B. Its contributors continued on to become scholars, teachers, and leaders in the U.S. Church. The book, and its contributors, inspired a generation of black Catholics and helped move the American Church on a path toward inclusion. It was both a product of its time and a beacon of hope.

The authors Augustine, Aquinas, and Dante represent the Catholic Intellectual Tradition claim that human reason and faith are compatible. Augustine struggled to find God because of his sinful behavior during his youth. On his journey to converting to Catholicism, Augustine reasons through his questions regarding God to find the truth. Aquinas writes about how humans do not have the capacity to ever reach the full knowledge of God. After Dante describes his journey through hell and purgatory, he finally reaches heaven and is incapable of describing God because it is beyond human comprehension. Psychology

Incorporating spirituality into contemporary professional clinical practice has become more common in recent years most notably with the popular interest of mindfulness meditation, mindfulness based stress reduction, and yoga in particular. However, many other spiritual and religiously based assessment and treatment approaches have also been successfully utilized with a great deal of evidence-based research to support their use and effectiveness. The purpose of this brief article is to outline several guiding principles for those professionals interested in integrating spiritual and religious wisdom and approaches into their professional clinical practices in the spirit of diversity and multiculturalism sensitivity and respect. This article, a revision of the Raymund Schwager, S.J., Memorial Lecture, given at the Colloquium on Religion and Violence, July 10, 2015, St. Louis University, focuses on the risk of memory and the cost of forgetting. Memory, and the act of remembering both individually and collectively as a society, involves risk to a society’s present, past, and future. Forgetting comes at a price exacted by the past, but paid in the present for the future, even as nations sometimes choose to forget.
