In light of recent clergy abuse scandals, cover-ups and leadership shake-downs, it is a divided time in the Catholic Church: but this isn’t the whole story. My final capstone project is a critical essay of how Catholicism (and religion overall) is represented in mainstream media--particularly in secular news publications and entertainment (horror films) in the United States. By examining the coverage and how conversations differ within members of the Catholic Church--from journalists and critics to active Catholics, religious men and women--this project calls for greater accountability, fairness, faith representation in all media, and the overall claim that there are Catholic …

The paper utilizes the imagery and story of Tom McCarthy's 2015 film Spotlight to create reveal how deeply rooted Christian values are in American society. The paper also challenges this dominant ideology by highlighting the corrupt institutional efforts to maintain a pure image of the Church.

The concept of homosexuality did not exist prior to the nineteenth century. In literature, this made lesbians a rarity. With the absence of women writers and even fewer lesbian writers, the question for historians became how to find our queer ancestors. The Father Of Pan‐Africanism: Rev. Edward Wilmot Blyden, Rafi Rahman

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Rev. Edward Wilmot Blyden was born in the Virgin Islands, was ordained a Presbyterian minister, and became a leader in the Pan- Africanism movement. This paper argues that Rev. Blyden is an important figure within contemporary Black Church Studies because of his sui generis posture towards Islam, Pan-Africanism, and Black Nationalism. The felicitous Pan-African accolades attributed to Rev. Blyden by the Black Church are a result of his novel Afro-centric and inclusive interfaith hermeneutical posture and writings from the period of Reconstruction through the Progressive Era. Rev.
