Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. McQueen 2015 Chapman University

Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The primary quantum mechanical equation of motion entails that measurements typically do not have determinate outcomes, but result in superpositions of all possible outcomes. Dynamical collapse theories (e.g. GRW) supplement this equation with a stochastic Gaussian collapse function, intended to collapse the superposition of outcomes into one outcome. But the Gaussian collapses are imperfect in a way that leaves the superpositions intact. This is the tails problem. There are several ways of making this problem more precise. But many authors dismiss the problem without considering the more severe formulations. Here I distinguish four distinct tails problems. The first (bare tails …

Moral Disagreement And Audi's Account Of Moral Intuitionism, Dustin Michael Sigsbee 2015 Western Michigan University

Moral Disagreement And Audi's Account Of Moral Intuitionism, Dustin Michael Sigsbee

The Hilltop Review

In Moral Perception Robert Audi advocates for an intuitionist account of moral perception in which a moral agent of the proper disposition can use emotion and intuition as a means of supporting or justifying knowledge claims concerning certain moral truths or propositions. Since emotion and intuition can vary from agent to agent and neither agent would be better disposed to claim priority for their emotion or intuition over that of the other agent this opens Audi’s account up to possible instances of problematic disagreement. For this reason, I argue that agents in this intuitionist picture ought to remain epistemically agnostic …

Fellow Creatures: The Humean Case For Animal Ethics, Robert M. Causey 2015 Georgia College and State University

Fellow Creatures: The Humean Case For Animal Ethics, Robert M. Causey

Between the Species

In this article, I follow up on a suggestion made by Josephine Donovan that a Hume-inspired ethic of sympathy would be a better foundation for an animal ethic than more rationalistic approaches of both utilitarianism and deontology. I then expand on Donovan’s suggestion by further suggesting that Hume’s “sentiment of humanity” could easily be expanded to include other animals. Hume’s ethic of sympathy, I argue, answers the need for an ethic that is at once both personal, contextual, and sufficiently universalizable to incorporate the political need for something like justice. I say, “something like justice,” because animals are explicitly ruled …

Quentin Meillassoux: Philosophy In The Making, Graham Harman 2015 American University in Cairo

Quentin Meillassoux: Philosophy In The Making, Graham Harman

Faculty Books

An in-depth study of the emerging French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux Freshly called to a professorship at the Sorbonne, and described as the fastest-rising French philosopher since Derrida, Meillassoux's star has continued to rise. This expanded edition of the only book on Meillassoux remains the best introduction to one of Europe's most promising thinkers. In this expanded edition of his landmark 2011 work on Meillassoux, Graham Harman assesses Meillassoux's publications in English so far, covering new materials not available to the Anglophone reader at the time of the first edition. Along with Meillassoux's startling book on Mallarm's poem 'Un coup de …

Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. McQueen 2015 Chapman University

Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The principle of mass additivity states that the mass of a composite object is the sum of the masses of its elementary components. Mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics but false in special relativity. Physicists have explained why mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics by reducing it to Newton’s microphysical laws. This reductive explanation does not fit well with deducibility theories of reductive explanation such as the modern Nagelian theory of reduction, and the a priori entailment theory of reduction that is prominent in the philosophy of mind. Nonetheless, I argue that a reconstruction of the explanation that …
