This thesis investigates how John Williams’s three major works of fiction — Butcher’s Crossing, Stoner, and Augustus — are narratively structured around three main characters who embody the tenets of stoic and Emersonian transcendental philosophy, respectively. Williams uses these characters to promote and critique preconceived notions of heroic masculinity as structured within these philosophies. Through an analysis of form, this thesis will explore how Williams scaffolds his three main characters around the language and ideas present within each philosophical school. The death-positive movement, the most recent manifestation of the death awareness movement, contends that modern society is suffering from a “death taboo” and that people should talk more openly about death. This movement is striving to shift the dialogue about (and place of) death and dying into community spaces. Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. Malgré la présence évidente et continue des références intertextuelles dans les romans de Mouloud Feraoun, celles-ci n’ont été que rarement étudiées. C’est notamment dans son troisième roman, Les chemins qui montent, que les renvois à la littérature orale de la Kabylie comme à l’œuvre romanesque et philosophique d’Albert Camus se prêtent particulièrement à une analyse approfondie. Ils révèlent la résignation profonde du protagoniste qui se refuse à la révolte métaphysique au sens camusien, révolte rendue impossible par la condition coloniale.
