Spectacular Ambition: The Failure And Reception Of Leonardo Da Vinci’S Equestrian Monument To Francesco Sforza, Emily Jean Hanson 2021 Washington University in St. Louis

Spectacular Ambition: The Failure And Reception Of Leonardo Da Vinci’S Equestrian Monument To Francesco Sforza, Emily Jean Hanson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

At the close of the fifteenth century, a drastic change in political circumstances compelled Leonardo da Vinci to swiftly leave Milan. His patron, Lodovico Sforza, had been run out by the invading French army, who made quick work of exiling and executing Sforza’s inner circle. Leonardo abandoned the career he had established in Milan to return to Florence, with an even greater number of unfinished projects than he had already left behind in the Tuscan city. Yet now the artist brought with him a reputation of spectacular ambition, for he famously designed a colossal equestrian monument for the Duke of …

The Topes De Collantes Sanatorium: A Look At The Global Sanatorium Movement, The Climate Cure Theory, And How Tuberculosis Influenced Modern Architecture, Alex Del Dago 2021 University of North Florida

The Topes De Collantes Sanatorium: A Look At The Global Sanatorium Movement, The Climate Cure Theory, And How Tuberculosis Influenced Modern Architecture, Alex Del Dago

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

The Topes de Collantes Sanatorium in Cuba was constructed during a time in medical history when it was commonly believed that a specific climate played a strong role in tuberculosis treatment. My research paper addresses how the so-called “Climate Cure” theory spread throughout the Western hemisphere and influenced the construction of sleek, modern tuberculosis sanatoriums. Previous research and scholarship have looked at major TB sanatoriums in Europe and the United States in depth, however, little has been looked at TB sanatoriums in smaller countries such as Cuba. I seek to fill in this gap of tuberculosis’ history by taking a …

Mammy And Aunt Jemima: Keeping The Old South Alive In Popular Visual Culture, Angela G. Athnasios 2021 Wayne State University

Mammy And Aunt Jemima: Keeping The Old South Alive In Popular Visual Culture, Angela G. Athnasios

Honors College Theses

Throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth century, American popular visual culture produced racist portrayals of Black Americans. Literature, illustrations, minstrelsy, film, and television are notorious for promoting such unflattering images. Each of these media typified African Americans as exaggerated caricatures with dark skin, bulging eyes, bright-red lips, and goofy smiles. The creators of these stereotypes project their racist beliefs into popular culture. This in turn heavily influences the way other races view people of African descent, as well as how Black people view themselves. From mammies, to Jezebels, to pickaninnies, and everything in between, the message ultimately conveyed in these …

Examining Health Inequity In Ancient Egypt, Samantha Rose Gonzalez

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis explores the history of medicine in ancient Egypt between the Middle and New Kingdoms, and offers a case study highlighting the use of religion and magic in healing and analyzing health inequity. I am interested in medical practices, treatments, diagnosis methods, and access to healthcare in the ancient world. I seek to bridge the gaps and help unify the knowledge surrounding ancient Egyptian medical practices and contribute to the studies in the history of medicine. I explore types of diseases that commonly affected the ancient Egyptians and how they integrated religion and magic into their understanding and treatment …

Courtland Street, Lake George : A Bioarchaeological Study Of The Skeletal Foot Morphology Of Early Revolutionary War Soldiers, Alexandra Grace Decarlo 2021 University at Albany, State University of New York

Courtland Street, Lake George : A Bioarchaeological Study Of The Skeletal Foot Morphology Of Early Revolutionary War Soldiers, Alexandra Grace Decarlo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In 2019, an unmarked burial ground was discovered in the town of Lake George, NY. Under the leadership of the Bioarcheology department at the New York State Museum, numerous interments were excavated. A few of the remains had been bisected, leaving only their lower limbs. Additionally, many of the remains were commingled within a large mound of dirt. Upon analysis, the remains recovered from the Courtland Street site were determined to be associated with the Revolutionary War and the early Battle of Quebec in 1775. Due to the state of the remains, it was only possible to focus an analysis …

Letting The Days Go By: An Investigation Into The Artistic And Functional Nature Of Calendars., Elise Alexandra Blankenship 2021 University of Louisville

Letting The Days Go By: An Investigation Into The Artistic And Functional Nature Of Calendars., Elise Alexandra Blankenship

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Calendars have been widely ignored as cultural objects in a contemporary context. Because of this lack of consideration, analyzing a calendar as a work of art is theoretically interesting. This thesis uses the theory of Kitsch, philosophies concerning art in the home, and the theory of relational aesthetics to express the impact that calendars can have when considered works of art. This thesis also discovers the forgotten provenance of block print calendars from the University of Louisville’s extensive print collection. This thesis attempts to coerce the viewer to consider the calendars in their homes as works of art.
