La période avant la révolution française s'appelle l’Ancien Régime, système politique en France qui prend fin en 1789, l’année de la révolution. En plus, la monarchie absolue contrôlait le pays de manière despotique. C’est dans cet environnement de tension que Molière, dramaturge français du 17e siècle, écrit Le Misanthrope en 1666. Dans son oeuvre théâtrale Le Misanthrope, il critique les moeurs sociales qui caractérisaient la France de l’époque. Molière évoque un questionnement social qui se voit de manière préliminaire dans son oeuvre. En revanche, De Gouges, qui écrit en 1791, expose des questionnements plus élaborés que ceux de Molière.

The 1830s in France saw a revival of artistic interest in and representations of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England. This thesis traces Anne's influence on artistic, dramatic, and literary works of the 1830s and focuses on how these portrayals differed from one another as well as contemporary and modern opinions of Anne.

Lieux de Memoire, or "places of memory," are symbolic sites of national identity. Defined in Le Grand Robert de la langue franfaise, the term is attributed to French historian Pierre Nora. Nora has compiled two large project anthologies and several individual books of essays by various authors that identify and reflect upon symbolic sites of great national importance throughout France. Nora's various collections of work, span over "seven volumes, six thousand pages") and "more than one hundred and thirty authors" (Le Goff 118). This article aims to establish Algerian manga as a new object of study within the field of Francophone studies and the broader field of cartooning in the developing world. To this end, it provides a survey of existing works while answering three main questions: How has manga become part of the cultural habits of young Algerian creators and readers? What status does it hold in local cultural production? Finally, what strategies have artists employed to broaden the readership of Algerian manga and how have they taken advantage of the unique possibilities offered by this new medium?

Thus it is an ideal time for an investigation of the treatment of and attitudes about autism in France, specifically in comparison with the United States. This investigation encompass several specific categories, and the Freudian psychoanalytic method against the behavior modification method, the French education system and the identification of autism, "Maternal Madness" - the connection between sexism and autism, the philosophy of humanity and the history of medical experimentation and psychiatry in France. The monograph, entitled The Making of W2: Musical Compilation and Intention in the Shadow of Notre Dame. is a study of the creation of the thirteenth-century Parisian manuscript 1099, known as W2 and preserved in the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel, Germany.

For much of literary history, scholars have tended to focus on the symbolic valence of animals, to read their behavior and characteristics as representative of explicitly human interests and concerns. In the past medievalists have perhaps been even more prone to this, given that many of our sources providing descriptions of animal behavior, such as bestiaries, similarly emphasize the metaphorical or allegorical over the ethological.¹ Thus when we read something like Bisclavret, Marie de France’s twelfth-century Anglo-Norman lai, scholars frequently discuss its werewolf protagonist as a foil for his much more beastly if wholly human wife. Tondelli opens his Un weekend postmoderno. Cronache dagli anni Ottanta declaring an intention opposite to the display of amnesia. In the long table of contents of his book, he writes down everything, in an excruciating streaming of details, so that the table of content becomes an exhaustive index of names and ideas. Yet, hidden within the hundreds of analytical snapshots, one of its many characters mentions the importance of dissimulation. Dissimulation, according to Tondelli, hides what is known, to protect the dissimulator and to mask the truth. Also, amnesia is a voluntary practice that can be enacted in order to …

Descartes’ work reveals profound changes in seventeenth century concepts of knowledge, social relations, and language. Given that the advent of a metaphysical subject is, in the Cartesian system, bound with a definition of the social aims of philosophy, which entails a rhetoric capable of representing this philosophy to a larger, general public of individual subjects, my study of the optical tropes in a letter written to Guez de Balzac from Amsterdam, on May 5, 1631, suggests that the question of the autonomy of the subject with regard to the State – a State defined by the consolidation of Cardinal Richelieu’s …

In the last few decades, the landscape of Franco-Arab fiction has seen a great many authorship scandals, in which French non-Arab authors have impersonated Arabs and found publishing success. In this essay, I revisit these scandals while focusing on a recent “autobiographical” novel that raised suspicions of ghostwriting: 2011’s Tout le monde aime Mohamed (Everyone Loves Mohamed ) by Malik Kuzman. An impressionistic collage of homo-erotic encounters, its fleeting structure recalls that of Barthes’ Incidents, a series of social vignettes culled from the author’s time in Morocco. Inspired by the study of Western historiography and the processes by which silence enters into history in Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s seminal work, Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History, this dissertation demonstrates that fiction can be used both for silencing the past and for rewriting it.
