Femtoring Book Club: Turning Pages, Uplifting Latinas, Heather A. Hathaway Miranda

Gatherings

Amid the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, I initiated Learn, Laugh, Lead, and Self-Love, a virtual femtoring program designed for Latina women aged 19 to 25. This weekly space incorporated interactive elements such as icebreakers, creative responses to visual art, and intentional community-building practices to cultivate trust and solidarity. After one year, the virtual gatherings transitioned into a monthly femtoring book club for women of color, launching with The Four Agreements and centering themes of gratitude, affirmation, and the reflective practice of sharing tunas and espinas© (joys and challenges). Drawing on my prior participation and support of an in-person …

The Paradox Of The Broker: Why Educators Of Color Must Be Supported, Not Just Celebrated, Tatiana C. Parker 2025 N/A

The Paradox Of The Broker: Why Educators Of Color Must Be Supported, Not Just Celebrated, Tatiana C. Parker

Gatherings

In this article, Dr. Tatiana C. Parker examines the transformative potential of social capital brokering within the higher education system, particularly for communities that have been systematically excluded through opportunity hoarding and network closures both historically and presently. Institutions of learning have long served as sites for the transmission of instrumental (tangible) and expressive (emotional) social capital returns. Yet, the same system that has supported mobility is now under attack through the divestment of education, ideological resistance, and the longstanding disenfranchisement of educators of color.

Drawing on her research regarding Black women and upward mobility, she asserts that when educators, …

Women, Race, Recovery: How Some Of History’S Most Impactful Thinkers Reflect On Their Own Healing, Karol Cooper

Gatherings

With examples from influential women of color feminists, the essay points to some obstacles in the way to developing a true practice of recovery for women of color academics whose research brings them in continual contact with histories and enactments of harm against women and people of color. As women of color in higher education, articulating our health and healing needs in our own terms would help us clear a path to promoting ourselves as whole and healthy persons, in addition to promoting us along a career path. The essay collects reflections on health struggles from famous women of color …

Gatherings

This essay explores the transformative power of community for women of color navigating the challenges of higher education. Reflecting on personal experiences, it highlights the intersectionality of being both a woman and a member of a minority group in the U.S. Central to overcoming these obstacles is the support of a peer community, which fosters "community healing", a space for shared struggles, validation, and empowerment. It advocates for increased representation at all levels of the higher education journey, viewing it as an …

Calculating The Cost: Loss And Grieving Through The Demands Of Higher Education, Vanessa Rojas

Gatherings

To make it through my final year of my doctoral degree, I had to focus on my research more and my mom less. I had spent most of my life worrying and caring for my mom through her mental health struggles. In September 2017, my mom ended her life. I was pressured into returning to my academic responsibilities shortly after her death. I buried my emotions to get through it. Less than a year later, I started my career in higher education in New York immediately after submitting my dissertation, leaving myself no time to grieve or to be vulnerable. …

This essay explores the layered experience of navigating race and belonging as an African woman and international graduate student within U.S. higher education. A Little Piece Of Her Dies, Keturah L. Hancock 2025 SUNY Oswego

A Little Piece Of Her Dies, Keturah L. Hancock

Gatherings

This poem explores the emotional labor of being authentic in spaces not built for women of color. This poem specifically addresses the experiences of Black women. Often, Black women find themselves torn between maintaining peace and being themselves. The poem addresses concepts such as tone policing, code-switching, and expression. It honors Black women in academia who feel they have to shrink themselves to be seen. There is a sense of safety that comes with fitting in and not making waves in a predominantly white space. However, this poem offers an alternative, calling Black women to stand up for those who …

No More Hester Prynne, Jeanine A. Irons 2025 Syracuse University

No More Hester Prynne, Jeanine A. Irons

Gatherings

This poem is a response to my experiences at The State of Women of Color in New York Higher Education symposium that occurred in March of 2025. During this symposium, keynote speakers and panelists shared their stories--their real life experiences--navigating higher education in the United States and the impact of intersectional oppression that was part of their daily lives. Underpinning all of it was the way that labels are used to both highlight people and make them hypervisible while at the same time dehumanize them. This poem is born out of my own thinkings about what it means to navigate …

Guerrilleras: Speaking Truths And Strategizing Futures, Estela López

Gatherings

Women of color in higher education face a landscape that can be difficult to navigate for any number of reasons. For those who succeed, our successes and failures are hard fought and even harder won. This personal reflection considers my experiences participating in The State of Women of Color in New York Higher Education, and my goals for sharing about these aspects from my own career. I offer a goal that guided me through what I discussed at the symposium and saw interwoven throughout the day: women of color guerrilleras who come together in a coalition of warrior sisters to …

The different presentations provided food for thought, and in some cases, reminders of the space we need to ensure we are well as we do the work we want and need to do. This poem reflected the messages shared by multiple speakers throughout the day.
