Slave Rebellion, Fugitive Literature, And The Force Of Law, Jeffrey Hole
First-Year Honors Program Research Seminars
From the Stono Rebellion in 1739 to the revolt aboard the ship Amistad in 1839, from Nat Turner’s uprising in 1831 to the raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859—on land and on sea, in U.S. territory and international spaces—slaves and abolitionist allies resisted the legal doctrines and martial enforcement of the slave system. In this presentation, we will explore how nineteenth-century literature imagined and depicted slave rebellion, particularly in the decade before the Civil War and in the aftermath of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. A component of the Great Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act strengthened a set …

To Build The Fire Of Revolution, Stephen Roddewig
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Scholarly examinations of naturalism in Jack London’s 1908 short story “To Build a Fire” often overlook the influence of the socialist political movement. After surveying the American Socialist Party movement and London’s activism in “How I Became a Socialist,” this essay uses the frame of Marxist rhetorical criticism to inspect sociopolitical themes in London’s famous story. London’s critiques of Individualism in “How I Became a Socialist” parallel one of his concerns in “To Build a Fire” as his unnamed protagonist progresses through the Yukon with the larger ideals of American society and the capitalist economy guiding his actions. Although masculinity, …

Biopolitical Masochism In Marina Abramović’S The Artist Is Present, Jaime Brunton
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This essay analyzes The Artist Is Present, Marina Abramović’s heavily mediatized 2010 performance at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, through the lenses of Freudian and Deleuzean concepts of masochism, specifically with respect to how the masochistic tendencies of this performance may be read in the current context of biopolitics. The essay seeks answers to questions of political import that many critical analyses of Abramović’s performance, which focus on details of the performer’s personal history, have not adequately addressed. Drawing on the documentary film Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present (2012) that follows Abramović through the conceptualization and enactment …

Perspectives: Miami Through a Different Lens
"The students at the University of Miami have combined their stories with those of marginalized groups within the country to learn more about themselves and the world they live in. They spoke to women from the Homestead Correctional Institution by taking part in the Exchange for Change program and communicated with undocumented farm workers in the area through WeCount.
The journal features submissions from students and their exchange partners in the form of excerpts from their exchange letters, as well as several collaborative stories that students wrote with the women of HCI. Students wrote reflections on their dinner with farm …

The term ‘grand strategy’ may appear be an extravagant and abstract expression, yet it is simply a shorthand manner of describing a country’s efforts in diverse areas towards its key goals. According to Yale historian Paul Kennedy, the crux of grand strategy lies in the “capacity of the nation’s leaders to bring together all of the elements, both military and nonmilitary, for the preservation and enhancement of the nation’s long-term (that is, in wartime and peacetime) best interests” (Kennedy 1991:5). Thus, grand strategy deploys all of a country’s assets. For India, one such asset is the English language. Although English …

Interpersonal Communication: One Smile Away From A Lifetime Of Success, Alexander Anthony Johnson
Tutor's Column
The reason I chose to write my tutors column on interpersonal communication is the application it has in every tutoring scenario. Without effective interpersonal communication skills, you might not be able to develop the feedback that is most beneficial to your peer. Instead of helping them uncover their voice and passion for writing, you might become a broken record, repeating grammar issues that they knew they had but were too lazy to fix prior to the session. As a tutor, we are expected to be masters of the English language. We can catch problems in a paper that most students …

Tutor's Column
Writing center tutoring sessions are built on questions. Questions help tutors gain information needed to help students. This may include details about the student’s classes, professors, assignments and struggles. Questions can also engage the student and make them an equal partner in the session. However, just because questions are being asked does not mean the student is getting the help they need. The types of questions asked directly influence the quality of the tutoring visit. Questions need to be genuine, which means they come from the tutor’s desire to truly understand the student and where the student’s ideas come from. …

Putting Writers At Rest Into Motion, Cody Kelley
Tutor's Column
Many students whose studies emphasize science-based fields often struggle to understand why writing skills are important and necessary. For this reason, writing center tutors have the opportunity to adjust tutoring practices in such a way that students are equipped for both educational and professional experiences. Research has shown that the majority of college graduates lack basic written communication skills employers look for, suggesting a disconnect between English classes and other writing situations. As tutors understand the struggles of science-based students, they can adjust tutoring practices such that students are comfortable learning about writing and translate those skills into all aspects …

Power To The Writer, Sara Mozingo
Tutor's Column
Some students are intimated by writing at a university level. Often, self-degrading comments will be made, in which the tutor will reject and attempt to build their confidence. Is there a correct way to empower each student? McCarthy and Weimer suggest giving specific feedback, using starter terms, picking a topic relevant to the author, helping them feel competent, acknowledging the effect a writer can have, and giving the student the option to choose. By using these tactics, the tutor can shape the student’s feelings for writing and help them become an independent writers.

Writing And Women's Retention In Engineering, Jennifer C. Mallette
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
Engineering disciplines have focused on recruiting and retaining women, assessing factors that contribute to decisions to enter or exit the field at every level. While many studies have examined writing in engineering disciplines, few have looked at writing’s role in women’s decisions to remain in or leave engineering. Using a case study of a professional civil engineer, Katy, this study examines the role that writing played in her dissatisfaction with engineering and her ultimate decision to leave the field. The author analyzes two genres of writing, meeting minutes and a preliminary engineering report, to explore how Katy’s writing practices often …

What About Susan? Gender In Narnia, Emma G. Schilling

Critics of C.S. Lewis argue that his misogyny is present in his portrayal of female characters. While Lewis himself was self-contradictory in his attitudes towards women, his depictions of female characters in The Chronicles of Narnia are both realistic and progressive. Both the male and female characters throughout the series demonstrate individual strengths and weaknesses that are not dependent on their gender. The criticism against Lewis focuses on his treatment of Susan, especially regarding her being the only child not to return to Narnia at the end of the series. Unlike what the critics argue, however, Susan is not excluded …

Beyond Pacifism: Teaching World War I Literature From Left To Right, Joyce Wexler

The military historian Yuval Noah Harari accounts for the enduring allure of war by calling attention to a change in soldiers' memoirs that occurred in the mid-eighteenth century. Soldiers began to describe how they felt rather than what they did. Harari introduces the term flesh-witnessing to distinguish inner experience from eyewitness testimony. Flesh-witnesses speak of combat as a transformative and indescribable experience comparable to the sublime. This view is often attributed to militarists, but Harari shows that it also motivates pacifists. Even antiwar arguments like those of Erich Maria Remarque are based on the authority of the flesh-witness. To test …
