The George Eliot Archive: Current Reception & Comparison Of Dh Projects, Mackenzie Burch 2020 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

The George Eliot Archive: Current Reception & Comparison Of Dh Projects, Mackenzie Burch

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

As the field of Digital Humanities continues to grow, the projects also continue to develop their own identities with unique goals. The interdisciplinary nature of multimedia projects has allowed DH to develop in a number of different directions. As a research assistant for the George Eliot Archive digital project launched in early 2019 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, it is essential for us to stay current this development in the field of DH.

Through exploring twenty digital projects and archives at various stages of development or establishment, I have gained a cohesive and current snapshot of Digital Humanities projects, and …

Voice, Choice, And ( Material ) Agency: The Sexualized Feminine Body In Young Adult Literature, Tharini Viswanath 2020 Illinois State University

Voice, Choice, And ( Material ) Agency: The Sexualized Feminine Body In Young Adult Literature, Tharini Viswanath

Theses and Dissertations

My study unites two disparate strands of feminist theory: the linguistic, which emphasizes the relationship between language and power, and the material, which argues that the human body has its own agency. I raise three main points. First, I contend that the sexualized feminine body is the site of neither the linguistic nor the material independent of one another, but both the linguistic and the material existing in a state of fluidity and interdependency, which combine to grant the young female character agency. Second, I contend that feminist novels should not only have strong female characters, but that they should …

Research in progress for CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice

Faculty Mentor: Stefanie LeMaire

The following paper represents work produced by a student in an Introduction to Criminal Justice course at Collin College. The paper is an objective analysis of prominent research regarding potential police biases and how officers’ decisions may be influenced by a suspect’s race. The topic of racial bias within policing is quite controversial, as evidenced by the community protests, media coverage, and destruction that has ensued after officer-involved shootings. This assignment asks students to objectively review scholarly research on police bias and constructively criticize …

Reflective Group Writing Project For Eng 3140, David J. Carlson

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

This assignment is a culminating group writing project/presentation for ENG 3140 Native American and Indigenous Literatures. Students are asked to assess the course content and pedagogy through two lenses: (1) theories regarding the nature of decolonizing pedagogy derived from the field of indigenous studies, and (2) CSUSBs specific GE "Diversity and Inclusion" and "Global Perspectives" designations. The goal is for students to assess whether the way our institution frames its GE ILOs is compatible with decolonial practice as defined within the field.

Powered By Social Energies: A New Historicism Approach To Gone With The Wind, Kimberly Taylor 2020 Bringham Young University

Powered By Social Energies: A New Historicism Approach To Gone With The Wind, Kimberly Taylor

Augsburg Honors Review

Gone with the Wind was a runaway bestseller in the 1930s due to Mitchell's ability to pull the circulating social energies of her own time period into a book ostensibly set in the Civil War and Reconstruction Period. Using Stephen Greenblatt's ideas from Shakespearean Negotiations, I trace these in Gone with the Wind with support from multiple sources. These swirling social energies provide a sense of inevitability to the story which underpins Scarlett's frantic survivalism, but they are not transformed. This lack of transformation creates a disturbing reality wherein Scarlett can learn nothing, change nothing and rail against her apparent …

Huck Finn And (Still) Racist America, Daniel Polaschek 2020 Augsburg College

Huck Finn And (Still) Racist America, Daniel Polaschek

Augsburg Honors Review

The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which the infamously banned book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can be used in contemporary society and, more importantly, in schools. Ever since Mark Twain wrote the book, Huck Finn has received bombardments of criticism, both positive and negative. Unfortunately, for the most part the negative criticism has made itself more easily heard, causing the book to be banned from countless libraries and public and private schools. Given the ill treatment of the book, this paper will argue that the race discussion inherent in Mark Twain's The Adventures of …

Joycean Babeling: Scattered Language In 'Oxen Of The Sun', Mae Capozzi 2020 Skidmore College

Joycean Babeling: Scattered Language In 'Oxen Of The Sun', Mae Capozzi

Augsburg Honors Review

This paper considers James Joyce's Ulysses. It focuses specifically on Joyce's use of language in "Oxen of the Sun." I interpret the episode, which figures the conception, gestation, and birth of language alongside a literal birth, as a construction and deconstruction of the English language that suggests its ultimate inefficacy. I framed my close reading of the chapter with theoretical work by Thomas Aquinas, Ferdinand de Saussure, Walter Benjamin, and Jacques Derrida. I argue that Joyce, by acknowledging the limits of language even as he continues to write, reaffirms and reinscribes the role of the Artist. I contend that Joyce …

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski 2020 Jagiellonian University, Cracow and the University of Groningen

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The article offers a Valentinian interpretation of the Hollywood film The Others (2001). A particular attention is paid to the ways in which cinematic motifs and narrative elements of the film draw on myths, ideas and symbolic imagery present in Valentinian works, especially in the Gospel of Truth (NHC I, 3) and the Gospel of Philip (NHC II, 3). In the course of the heuristic analysis, the paper argues that although the film employs Valentinian ideas, it depicts different understanding of the world. This issue is addressed in the last part of the article by situating the film within broader …

Revisiting "Home" In Ghanaian Poetry: Awoonor, Anyidoho And Adzei, Gabriel Edzordzi Agbozo 2020 Michigan Technological University

Revisiting "Home" In Ghanaian Poetry: Awoonor, Anyidoho And Adzei, Gabriel Edzordzi Agbozo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The idea of “home” is a significant occurrence in postcolonial literature, as it connects to other ideas as identity, nationhood, and culture. This paper discusses “home” in Ghanaian poetry focusing on three well-regarded poets: Kofi Awoonor, Kofi Anyidoho, and Mawuli Adzei. These poets come from the Ewe ethnic group, and engage with the Pan-African project in both their scholarly and creative expressions. Drawing on John Berger, Sara Dessen, and Ewe thought on the afterlife, this paper suggests two major types of “home” in the works of these three poets: the physical, and the metaphysical. Physical “home” refer to the Wheta …
