Peer Review In Academic Writing: Different Perspectives From Instructors And Students, Rashad Ahmed

Research, Publications & Creative Work

This article employed a mixed-method approach to examine peer review through the eyes of writing instructors and first-year college students, including native and non-native speakers of English. A total of 162 participants took part in the study, including 124 students and 20 full time writing instructors. The quantitative analysis involved multiple chi-square tests and Fisher’s exact tests with Bonferroni adjustments for Type-I error. The qualitative data were examined for common themes and summarized in categories illustrated by participants’ quotes. The results of the study showed significant differences between the instructors and the students in relation to the writing aspects that …

Data was taken from a nine-week, English as a foreign language (EFL) writing course from 101 intermediate (n=101) students at a private university in Kobe, Japan. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, quantitative data was first collected concerning writing errors, followed by qualitative semi-structured interviews. Three classes were placed into either two treatment groups (direct and indirect) or a control group, and completed four writing tasks (pre-test, post-test and two delayed post-tests). The study found the two treatment …

“Almost Unknown To The General Reader”: Biographical And Conceptual Contexts Of Melville’S Marginalia In Thomas Warton’S The History Of English Poetry, Steven Olsen-Smith, Cheyene Austin, Denise Holbrook 2021 Boise State University

“Almost Unknown To The General Reader”: Biographical And Conceptual Contexts Of Melville’S Marginalia In Thomas Warton’S The History Of English Poetry, Steven Olsen-Smith, Cheyene Austin, Denise Holbrook

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Herman Melville’s copy of Thomas Warton’s The History of English Poetry (1871) both epitomises the fate of Melville’s dispersed library and illustrates the challenges and importance of his reading and marginalia to research on his life and writings. This 1032-page volume left Melville’s library following his death in 1891; it was discovered in the 1930s, subsequently lost, and rediscovered in 1999. Twice rebound and missing its original endpapers, the extremely brittle volume has now been digitised at Melville’s Marginalia Online. Melville’s markings and annotations reveal his preoccupation with Warton’s attention to subjects “almost unknown to the general reader”: lost …

Your One Wild And Precious Life: The Prayer-Poems Of William Blake & Mary Oliver, Amanda Iacampo 2021 Salve Regina University

Your One Wild And Precious Life: The Prayer-Poems Of William Blake & Mary Oliver, Amanda Iacampo

Master's Theses

The poetry of illuminated printmaker William Blake is remembered long after his death and the passing of the Romantic Movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His collection, Songs of Innocence and Experience, examines individualism in celebration of the natural world and connections with God, or the divine, by using animals as subjects and metaphors for the human condition. Readers of Blake's work can see the influence of his "prayer-poems" in the works of other writers, such as the late American poet Mary Oliver, whose poetry is also rich in religious undertones. While Blake's "The Lamb" and its …

Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell 2021 Marquette University

Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article introduces “rhetorical body work” as a framework for understanding professional embodiment in health provider education and technical and professional communication (TPC) pedagogy. Using the case study of clinical nursing simulations and drawing on sociological theory, I provide a detailed analysis of three components of rhetorical body work as they manifest in three simulation scenarios: physical, emotional, and discursive. I conclude by considering the implications of these findings for the embodied teaching of TPC.

Behind Every Man(Uscript) Is A Woman: Social Networks, Christine De Pizan, And Westminster Abbey Library, Ms 21, Elizaveta Strakhov, Sarah Wilma Watson

English Faculty Research and Publications

London, Westminster Abbey Library, MS 21, a French lyric anthology dating to the mid-fifteenth century, bears the names of two male figures. Thomas Scales (c. 1399–1460), an English war commander, had his name and personal motto elaborately incorporated into the explicit of Christine de Pizan’s Epistre au dieu d’amours. Decades later, a Tudor reader added the name “Wyllam courtnay” to the manuscript’s margins. These two male names, physically visible on the surface of the manuscript, represent stable points of provenance data that provide important information about the use, meaning, and circulation of this medieval miscellany and the texts it …

Practitioner Attitudes Towards An Early Warning System: From Professional Distraction To Relational Support, Lillian Campbell, Amrita George, Shion Guha

English Faculty Research and Publications

As the general population ages and life expectancy increases in the United States, demand for virtual health care is on the rise. Undoubtedly, the next several decades will see increases in automated patient care and use of data-driven warning systems, trends which have already accelerated in the wake of Covid-19. Thus, understanding how traditionally trained healthcare practitioners respond to predictive analytics, like early warning systems, is vital for their successful implementation in the future.

Dissertations

Problem

The purpose of this study was to discover the preferred and used English vocabulary learning strategies of Saudi Arabic-speaking English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. In the light insufficient empirical and theoretical studies exploring the complex structure of vocabulary learning by Arabic-speaking ESL learners, this study investigated which strategies students viewed as significant in assisting them in learning new English vocabulary. Finally, the study sought to identify Saudi Arabic-speaking student attitudes toward and motivations for learning English as a second language; and whether these attitudes influenced which vocabulary learning strategies they preferred and used commonly.
