The Shattering, Bri Wilson

The Tuxedo Archives

I’m dead. But I’m still here. My soul got left behind. I didn’t believe in souls but now I have to and

I don’t remember when I was last alive. My memories have been blurred, shaken, chopped. I can’t recall how it ended, there was a lot of pain, then it stopped. Suddenly.

(how did I die.)

The Monsters And The Translators: An Apologia For The Study Of History, Walker Cosgrove 2021 Dordt University

The Monsters And The Translators: An Apologia For The Study Of History, Walker Cosgrove

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

No longer do we believe in monsters; we’ve reached a ripe old, disenchanted age. In the 21st century, we romance vampires, we train dragons, and we pacify Greek gods. In our enlightened state, we produce novels and films that offer the perspective of the monsters in an attempt to help us understand them and make them seem less monstrous. Yet, we continue to demonize, and the monstrous survives in the “other” with whom we disagree, fueled, no doubt, by our highly politicized society today. It appears we’ve learned nothing in our enlightened disenchantment. I want to consider here one such …

Effect Of Covid-19 On Elementary Students' Use Of Language Online, Emma Polen 2021 Duquesne University

Effect Of Covid-19 On Elementary Students' Use Of Language Online, Emma Polen

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an unprecedented period of online communication among children. This paper aims to exemplify how the reliance on digital communication platforms compelled by COVID-19 affected elementary students’ use of language. Within the study, children used primarily visual language on digital sites with friends. There were two main forms of primary research in this study. The first consisted of a survey of 16 parents of elementary school children in my school district. The second was an observation of Zoom chat room activity among three eight-year-olds. Both methods of conducting research build on the existing understanding that digital …

Frodo And Sam’S Relationship In The Light Of Aristotle’S Philia, Martina Juričková 2021 University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra

Frodo And Sam’S Relationship In The Light Of Aristotle’S Philia, Martina Juričková

Journal of Tolkien Research

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship of the two major characters of Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam. It tries to find out whether their relationship can be regarded as friendship and what kind of friendship it is. It analyses the relationship of Frodo and Sam and its development according to Aristotle’s teaching on friendship as this was the first and most complex analysis of friendship as a social and philosophical phenomenon. This work comes to the conclusion that Frodo and Sam’s relationship can be understood as an example of perfect, …

Faith, Hope, And Despair In Tolkien’S Works, Martina Juričková 2021 University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra

Faith, Hope, And Despair In Tolkien’S Works, Martina Juričková

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper explores how Tolkien depicts the two of the hierarchically most important Christian virtues—the theological virtues—faith and hope, and the opposing vice to hope, despair, in his Middle-earth tales. Knowing that Tolkien was a devout Catholic who acknowledged implementing elements of his faith into his work, it can be assumed that in the depiction of virtues he was also inspired by their religious understanding. The aim of this paper is to determine to what extent is his depiction of the chosen virtues concordant with their Christian definitions and what purpose they serve plot-wise.

Journal of Tolkien Research

In his legendarium, Tolkien presents four variants of what would be considered "classicism" in the Primary World: but the presence of all-but-immortal elves creates situations in which a classicizing devotion to ancient exemplars might not arise.

Poetry Beyond The Page: A Case For Spoken Word Poetry In Florida's Secondary Classrooms, Sarah Matherly

Senior Honors Theses

Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards, Florida’s most recent K-12 educational standards to promote literacy, lack the rising art of Spoken Word Poetry. However, Florida’s Department of Education should integrate Spoken Word into Florida’s Secondary curriculum. Spoken Word Poetry, by its definition, holds researched benefits that align with the B.E.S.T. Standard’s poetry recommendations and literacy-centered goals. In light of such benefits, Florida’s Department of Education should consider various Spoken Word poets and poems to include in Florida’s Secondary Curriculum, as well as explore the resources and integration methods included in this thesis for both teachers and students.
