Shakespeare's Hamlet And Chekhov's Ivanov And The Type Of The Russian Intellectual Of The Late 19th Century Russia, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb 2023 Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Jerash University, Jordan.

Shakespeare's Hamlet And Chekhov's Ivanov And The Type Of The Russian Intellectual Of The Late 19th Century Russia, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Shakespeare’s Hamlet influenced Chekhov's plays, from Ivanov to The Cherry Orchard. Ivanov was the first genuine literary figure to be created by Chekhov and his version of the character of the Russian Hamlet. This study is not only concerned with the Hamletian elements in Ivanov, but it also tries to stress the fact that Chekhov was casting an eye on Hamlet while creating the character of his protagonist. The personality of the hero of this play still provokes critical arguments. However, the work here looks at Ivanov as a tragic character, the Russian Hamlet of the 1880s, and views the …

Words On Screens: Women’S Names In Mobile Phone Contact Lists In Jordan, Ibrahim Darwish, Noora Abu Ain

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This study investigates how male Jordanians store the names of their female relatives in mobile phones contact lists. The source of the data is a small-scale survey of 90 male Jordanians from three equal age cohorts: young (18-35), middle-aged (36-49) and old (+50). The participants’ responses were coded in an excel sheet in which each token was coded for either [r] (real name) or [p] (pseudonym). Using Rbrul for quantitative analysis, the data were analysed within the framework of variationist sociolinguistics. The results show that male Jordanian city dwellers store the real names of their female relatives in mobile phone …

A Stylistic Analysis Of Adrienne Rich's "Planetarium" And "Power", Malek Zuraikat, Ekab Al-Shawashreh, Shrooq Awamleh

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Adrienne Rich utilizes free verse to surprise her readers by covering the intertwined relationship between politics and society, which results in encapsulating everyday practices in most of her poems. She tries to articulate the depressed voice of women, thus making this group noticeable by people. The study discusses Rich's poems "Planetarium" and "Power", focusing on pronouns, spacing, enjambment, and diction. It explains how the change in pronouns, for instnace, serves the theme of uniting women's experience of oppression and resistance and how the enjambment and the choice of diction are used to add emphasis on women's suffering and their consequent …

Arabic Proficiency Test: An Analytical And Evaluation Study, Hussain Obaidat

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

The need for a standardized Arabic proficiency language test for speakers of other languages and/or even native speakers of Arabic still poses a challenge for specialists in Arabic applied linguistics and teachers of Arabic to speakers of other languages alike. Despite many attempts to produce such a standardized test over the past decades, yet they fall short of being satisfactory to be accepted as international tests like other international recognized and widely implemented language proficiency tests due to their many short comings. This study is twofold: first, it is an attempt to shed light on some of the Arabic language …

Belonging To Harlem: Reading Zora Neale Hurston’S Story In Slang, Rumi Coller-Takahashi 2023 University at Albany, SUNY

Belonging To Harlem: Reading Zora Neale Hurston’S Story In Slang, Rumi Coller-Takahashi

Living in Languages

This essay examines Zora Neale Hurston’s “Story in Harlem Slang” (1942) to analyze how the reading experience of the story captures relational dynamics in the community of Harlem. Written in the “Harlemese,” a distinctive lexicon developed in the 1920s, the story seemingly serves as a dictionary with an attached glossary and illustrations of the vernacular words. Reading the story, however, not so much allows the readers to join the linguistic community as requires them to be conscious of the border-crossing movements. Such a structure is intertwined with the character’s theatrical life as a male prostitute, whose way of belonging to …

RACISM IN YOUR LIFE

The depth, impact, and experience of “racism” in our personal lives is a story that we do not often tell. These are predominantly private matters, only occasionally shared and with only certain people in our lives. Unfortunately, many people in our world are unaware of its full existence and do not know the truth about the experiences of racism in our daily lives. Without knowledge of these truths, society, including university leadership, cannot make adequate advancements to address these demoralizing experiences of people of color. In this anthology, writings on this subject will bring clarity, truth, …

Christian Allegories And Social Change In Southern Literature: A Comparative Study Of Mason Tarwater And Atticus Finch In Flannery O'Connor's The Violent Bear It Away And Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, Marlee Ruark 2023 Georgia College & State University

Christian Allegories And Social Change In Southern Literature: A Comparative Study Of Mason Tarwater And Atticus Finch In Flannery O'Connor's The Violent Bear It Away And Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, Marlee Ruark

English MA Theses

This thesis compares Mason Tarwater of Flannery O’Connor’s The Violent Bear It Away and Atticus Finch of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to better understand how each author comments on Christian allegories and social change within their novels. This thesis argues that To Kill a Mockingbird promotes social change through the Christian values of good Samaritanism, nonviolence, and inclusion, while The Violent Bear It Away promotes a problematic Christian message. This thesis identifies how both novels utilize religious allegory. In O’Connor’s novel, the paradoxical and violent prophet figure, Mason Tarwater, uses violence and division to evoke change, while in …

Finding The Middle Zone; Redefining Spirituality Through Contemporary American Literature, Mickey McPoland 2023 SUNY College Cortland

Finding The Middle Zone; Redefining Spirituality Through Contemporary American Literature, Mickey Mcpoland

Master's Theses

In this essay, I investigate the intersection of post-postmodern literature and postsecular thought. I examine Jonathan Franzen’s novel Crossroads (2022) as a means to examine a religious conception of goodness and how goodness becomes rooted in what we worship. I also look to Infinite Jest and “Good People” by David Foster Wallace. The latter illuminates the conflict between traditional forms of worship and contemporary calls to worship one’s own desires, which results in stagnation, frigidity, and indecisiveness. Characters follow their internal compass, which leads them only further away from a sense of stability. Franzen’s work shows what replaces traditional religious …

Towards A Literary History Of Quaker Writing In The Atlantic World, Jay David Miller 2023 George Fox University

Towards A Literary History Of Quaker Writing In The Atlantic World, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Among eighteenth-century Quaker writers, John Woolman was idiosyncratic, as illustrated by the fact that in his journal he recorded an ac-count of his own death. Needless to say, this was not usually done. Instead, it was conventional for posthumously published Quaker journals to include not only an autobiographical narrative of spiritual development but also additional material written by qualified Friends offering further testimony and giving details about how and when the author died. The first printing of Woolman’s journal in his posthumous Works (1774) is accompanied by such material about his 1772 death in York, England, but this was not …

Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller 2023 George Fox University

Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This essay examines the relationship between Christian theology, environmental aesthetics, and environmental justice in colonial America. As opposed to the work of secular writers from the early republic like J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur and Thomas Jefferson, the Christian environmental aesthetics of Jonathan Edwards and John Woolman have potential to address questions of environmental justice in American literary history, such as tenant exploitation, African enslavement, and Indigenous displacement. Edwards, however, worked in a pastoral literary tradition, which limited his ability to imagine environmental justice due to his commitment to the doctrine of election. Woolman, on the other hand, worked …
