This essay studies the modernist feature of metafiction in Shashi Deshpande's novels to show how it allows Deshpande to discover an agency which, while conceived in personal and idiosyncratic terms as an isolated woman's bid for independence, has ramifications extending beyond the confines of the home and the book to an outright challenge of patriarchy. An exposition of the place that writing and art occupy in Deshpande's fiction is followed by an excursion into three aspects of the female creative process shared by her artist protagonists: its genesis in mourning, its expression in sexual being, and its feminist subversion of …

In this response, I will begin by identifying questions and issues about Stumped that might present themselves from law in literature and law as literature perspectives. This analysis will be followed by a discussion of the play from a particular law and narrative approach, one that ideologically is allied with feminist jurisprudence and critical race studies. Finally, I will conclude by examining the play in connection with scholarship on the cultural study of law, specifically emphasizing ways in which law and literature mutually constitute one another as opposed to being distinct categories of knowledge.

Robert Penn Warren Studies
Although a father of New Criticism, Warren did not always restrict his analysis of a text to the text itself. In his work with John Marston’s satires, Warren appears to go against what will become key attributes of New Critical theory. This essay explores Warren’s work with Marston’s satires, in particular examining his historicizing of the text, arguing for a more complicated view of Warren’s New Criticism.

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Jonathan Swift (1667-17 45) was unequivocally a priest of the Church of Ireland for fifty years but also was, more famously, a great satirist. The apparent contrast between the two conflicting functions (priest and writer of satires) of the late dean of Saint Patrick's Cathedral of Dublin has stimulated a great deal of critical discussion during the centuries since his death. Perhaps most prominent among recent contributions to the critical dialogue is Todd Parker's edited volume Swift as Priest and Satirist. Robert Penn Warren’s career and canon demonstrate his more than casual interest in photography, much like those of several contemporaries in the Southern Renaissance. Warren’s 1972 essay about photographer Walker Evans recalls how photographs in the 1930s opened the emerging writer’s imagination to the power inherent in any art form to revise commonplace perceptions of social and subjective reality. Evans and many other photographers thus influenced Warren in his use of photographic tropes for an artistic transformation of the visual art of photography into the verbal art of literature. Robert Penn Warren Studies
The author traces the philosophical and poetic similarities between Robert Penn Warren and Gerard Manley Hopkins. In doing so, he addresses the meditative process that Warren and Hopkins use in their work in order to demonstrate human connectedness to each other and nature in the form of what could be called a mystic unity. Integral to this meditative process is Hopkins’ idiosyncratic concepts of “inscape” and “instress,” which are defined and explored by the author while demonstrating how Warren’s work is in dialogue with these concepts, particularly in his 1968 collection of poems, Incarnations.
