Examines Robert Burns's poem "Hallowe'en," first published in the Kilmarnock edition (1786), both in relation to its background in Scottish folklore and in terms of the way Burns presented it on the page, with numerous footnotes, arguing that "throughout the poem Burns acts as a participant observer in the classic anthropological sense."

"Sample Speech I' The Market-Place": The Habermasian Public Sphere In Robert Browning's The Ring And The Book, Anthony Thomas Garcia

In The Ring and the Book, Browning presents a spectrum of twelve dramatic monologues to tell a complicated murder story in 17th century Rome. Browning delves into the environs of 17th century Italy in creating the backdrop for the narrative in Books Two, Three, and Four, supplying these voices to provide historical and social context to the private matter of domestic violence. Understanding the function of this leading triad necessitates investigation into the relation of community and public space to the act of uxoricide. Many literary critics have observed Tolkien's work through biographical, allegorical, and source analyzing perspectives. Few scholars have considered the significance of Gollum. The complexity of Gollum is revealed through a Jungian lens and, although he is a fictional character, he may not be so far removed from reality. This character's split personality, as determined by the Ring, presents what could eventually become of man if he is not strong enough to resist that which has the potential to consume him. In other words, the worst version of the human condition is presented through Gollum and his internal conflict. He provides …
