The relationship between the Heaven and man is a central issue in the transformation of Confucianism in the Mid-Tang period. The discourses on the Heaven by Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan and Liu Yuxi help to promote the transformation of Confucianism and also greatly influence the transformation in literary creation. The differences in the poetry and prose between the three authors may also be interpreted from the perspective of the difference between their perceptions of the Heaven. The changes in the relationship between the Heaven and man lead to the broadened themes, innovated vocabulary, diversified styles and varied fresh imageries. Likewise, …

The present paper aims to clarify the genetic historical relationships between F. R. Leavis's cultural criticism and the discipline of Cultural Studies. It attempts a general survey of Leavis's criticism on culture, connecting him with the early development of Cultural Studies represented by Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams in the 1950s, and examines the complexity, contradictions and struggles in the transition from Leavis to Hoggrat and to Williams. Through an analysis of Leavis's cultural criticism, Hoggart's Uses of Literacy and Williams' Culture and Society, the paper delineates the internal relationships of intertextuality. This essay approaches Marshall McLuhan's media investigations in relation to his solid humanistic background. In the late 1930s, his doctoral studies at Cambridge University, UK, introduced him to the liberal arts of the trivium, while alerting him on the achievements of the most daring avant-garde movements of the inter-war period. A few years later, as a young Professor of English at the University of Toronto, McLuhan started to apply "the method of art analysis to the critical evaluation of society" (The Mechanical Bride, 1951) hoping to generate "light" and not "heat" in the "collective public mind". A critical approach or theory called "spectral criticism" has gradually risen in the West in the past two decades. Blanchot's reading theory is considered as the origin of this theory. In Blanchot's view, the act of reding has a spectral nature, which attributes to the spectral nature of the text. This project demonstrates materials developed over a three-year period in Chinese international schools for the teaching of U.S. history to ESL learners. It includes an outline for a two-year curriculum with a regular weekly cycle, as well as a close look at strategies and tested activities intended to facilitate understanding of this complex topic and to encourage students to participate beyond passive reception. Specific cultural issues of teaching U.S. history in China are discussed, including issues of ideology and censorship.

The Creation Of Daoism, Paul Fischer

This paper examines the creation of Daoism in its earliest, pre-Eastern Han period. After an examination of the critical terms "scholar/master" and "author/ school", I argue that, given the paucity of evidence, Sima Tan and Liu Xin should be credited with creating this tradition. The body of this article considers the definitions of Daoism given by these two scholars and all of the extant texts that Liu Xin classified as "Daoist." Based on these texts, I then suggest an amended definition of Daoism. In the conclusion, I address the recent claim that the daojia /daijiao dichotomy is false, speculating that …

Japanese feminism directly impacts the social image of non-male sexuality in Japanese literature and pop-culture through highlighting gender roles, ingrained misogyny, and violence toward non-male oriented sex. This project will specifically focus on the power dynamics of sex in Japanese society through gender roles, female sexuality, and the rise of Japanese feminist movement. Ever since the success of the French crime film Zigomar in 1911, the Japanese film industry has produced numerous movies depicting criminals and the detectives who try to apprehend them. This project focuses on how the household saving ratio changes from 1978-2013 in China and what factors caused the changes. Based China’s household saving rate changes from 1953-2000 by using the framework of the life-cycle hypothesis, Modigliani concluded that the rate of growth income and the demographic structure are the major determinant of the rate of private saving. This project attempts to extend Modigliani’s research using the data after 2000 and take changes of Chinese policy and additional factors into consideration. This course focuses on underlying religious and philosophical assumptions in the most recent works of Haruki Murakami (1949-), 1Q84 in three volumes and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. Murakami is the most popular and widely read novelist in Japan today and a major literary figure worldwide. He cites as his two sources for inspiration in writing 1Q84 George Orwell and the AUM religious cult, responsible for bombing Tokyo subways with sarin gas in the 1990s.
