S. T. Joshi, the preeminent scholar of weird fiction, considers H. P. Lovecraft a “topographical realist,” noting that, in his later fiction, Lovecraft creates realistic and painstakingly detailed settings. In “Providence Lost: Natural and Urban Landscapes in H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction,” I explore the significance of Lovecraft’s topographical realism and trace its evolution through Lovecraft’s career. I argue that Lovecraft’s early fiction, the tales, that is, that he wrote from 1917 to 1924 under the influence of Edgar Allan Poe and Lord Dunsany, pays little attention to the natural landscape, though Lovecraft does, in story after story, allude to fabulous, …

This dissertation employs a feminist theoretical lens in exploring the gendered uses of pregnancy and pregnancy metaphors in the production and dissemination of literary works in early modern England. By also examining the history of the printing press and the role it played in gendered textual production, early modern constructs of family and the role of mothers, as well as obstetric medicine and childbirth, I aim to demonstrate that mothering and authorship were congruent activities for female writers. Honor is misunderstood within popular culture, but it is also misunderstood within academic contexts. This is due to a decoupling of the term from its long historical significance, a significance that must not be ignored. That is because honor in the Americas is a structure of the hemisphere’s colonial legacy, its manifestation in the cultural fabric a result of the invasion of the continents by European settlers and colonizers. However, as far as my knowledge is concerned, no analytical and contrastive study has been conducted on this point in English and Arabic. Thus, this paper reviews the latest studies done on the position and order of adjectives in English and Arabic. Then, it describes the differences between the position and order of adjectives in both languages. The study also touches upon pedagogical implications for teaching adjectives in English. This article explores the stakes of the “cinema d’auteur” in Palestine and intends to analyze the constraints and opportunities that this cinema allows, through two case studies that question the cinematographic creation of Palestinian directors in exile. The first is a feature-length film, Recollection by Kamal Aljafari, a filmmaker from “Palestine of 48” who self-produced his film; the second, Dégradé by Arab and Tarzan Nasser, two directors from Gaza, benefited from an Arab-European co-production. Lebanese filmmakers often choose particular narrative forms for their co-produced movies. Either they deviate from traditional screenplay writing or they develop a lot of thematic variations. The margins of freedom, creativity, and inventiveness therefore increase globally in Lebanese co-produced cinema. To what extent are these new narrative forms adapted to the destabilized Lebanese geopolitical context? How do documentaries, dramas, and road movies establish a kind of Lebanese identity and memory in these movies, leading to their frequent selection in European and international film festivals?

This article examines the commercial and symbolic valorisation of Maghrebi films on the European market, looking at film admissions, film criticism, and academic discourses. It explores the position and the significance of films made with Maghrebi funding in Europe, while focusing more specifically on films on the condition of women, and films by women filmmakers. Comparing the circulation of Tunisian and Moroccan films in Europe, it highlights the recurring narrative tropes of these films and shows how films on the condition of women became the lead product on the French market. This paper explores two filmic attempts at compensating for the invisibility in which Amazigh people and struggles are kept in Morocco. Both films and filmmakers experimented with shooting and production plans, devices, and film forms that should best convey these realities. With a 50-year interval between the two, both attempts share the ambition to go against the limitations imposed by the “Centre Cinématographique Marocain”, resorting to clandestine shooting and supported by an international network. The trajectories of Lebanese film directors and their work, characterized by a strong international dimension and by their insertion within the art film networks, bear the mark of interactions between local and global visual and memorial norms linked to these trajectories, in a globalized cultural environment. These films, though enriched by this international dimension, may appear to develop their narrative following the demands of international festival audiences, risking that these demands become constraints, and at the risk of possible loss of contact with local audiences.
