Many histories of modern Japanese literature see the "completion" of the modern vernacular style in the writings of Shiga Naoya (1883--1971), Mushakōji Saneatsu (1885--1976) and Takamura Kōtarō (1883--1956). Why and how this critical-historical perception of stylistic normalcy arose and still continues is better understood, I propose, through a close reading of key texts that identifies instances and patterns of creative manipulation of-as opposed to mere determination by or complicity with-certain philosophical, social, and historical discourses.How this creative manipulation plays out varies in prose and poetry and from text to text. This thesis will focus on Ezra Pound’s poem, Histrion, its associations with Stanislavskian method acting and their interface with translation studies. The title of “Histrion” is derived from the Latin word for an actor and Pound clearly wishes to suggest strong parallels between the voice of the poet and the voice of the actor. The work evokes a clairvoyant state of heightened consciousness achieved by the poet, in which he melds the subjectivities of the modern writer and the “souls of all men great” (earlier poets such as Dante and Villon) in a translucent flame of fused …

The purpose of my application for an ORCA Grant was to collaborate with Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 950: Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, located in Hamburg, Germany. Using their resources and the expertise of Professor Roger T. Macfarlane, we were able to make important movement forward in the research surrounding a medieval manuscript in the holdings of BYU’s Special Collections.

The goal of the project was to establish correlation between a Russian person’s demographics, their emotional views and reactions regarding nuclear threats in 1999 and 2012. Research will include the interrupting of the data that is already present, and research will include looking into the political establishments in 1999. The benefits of the research are: establishing an understanding between nations and being able to view the post-Soviet Russian mindset concerning nuclear war.

The purpose of my ORCA project has been to research different methods of language study and ultimately shed light on the method of study that will best engage the student in the target language, keep their motivation to study as high as possible and result in efficient storage of studied materials into the long term memory where it will be available for later retrieval. Through studying the effectiveness of different types of foreign language study my hope is to facilitate a faster and deeper learning of a foreign language by students perusing secondary languages.

Our purpose in collecting folklore was to examine what happens to a society when the people can no longer identify themselves by nationality. Transylvania is a particularly good case study, because the borders have been disputed between Hungarians and Romanians essentially for as long as both nations have existed—so you’ve had plenty of time for national borders to sink deep into the social consciousness and subconscious. There have been generations of tradition, folklore, and education to instill a strong sense of nation-and-boundary-based identity. The Greek tragedies of Classical Athens frequently portray mothers in central roles, but despite this significance, the relationship between mother and child has long been overshadowed in secondary scholarship by the relationship between husband and wife. This study demonstrates the direct relationship between a female character's active possession of her children and her autonomy, or her ability to act in her own interests, in three plays of Euripides: Electra, Medea, and Ion. Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
談到香港的本土藝術，焦點往往落在結合中西藝術思潮的藝術家和他們的作品之上。事實上，由六、七○年代的新水墨畫運動開始，至八、九○年代的香港雕塑和裝置藝術，到當今年輕一代的香港藝術家多元媒體的混合創作，他們的作品在融合中西藝 術元素之餘，亦貫注了香港獨有的素質，不難嗅出“本土”的氣味。在藝術創作上，“本土”的氣味在於藝術家在創作時強烈的“本土意識”通過形式表現在作品上而形成獨 特的“本土”特徵，焦點在作品的風格和內容的表現。本文所述的“本土”，焦點卻不在於風格而在於作品所承載的獨特歷史背景，這些作品看似毫無新意，細看卻能看出作品獨有的“本土”意義。

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article traces the history of “beur” literature and shows the evolution of the literary production emerging from the “banlieues”. Mapping out the itineraries of these two literary trends, the article highlights both the genesis and the thematic and æsthetical articulations of Beur and Banlieue literatures. This article therefore foregrounds a paradigm shift, refl ected in the sensibility of a new wave of novelists.
