Northwest Arkansas Comprehensive Environmental Analysis And Regional Smart Growth Plan, Nick Cerra, Zac Prange 2012 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Northwest Arkansas Comprehensive Environmental Analysis And Regional Smart Growth Plan, Nick Cerra, Zac Prange

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

For the past two decades, Northwest Arkansas has experienced rapid growth and increased urban development; population projections see the continuation of these trends (Wiley, 2010). Environmental conditions in the study area make it particularly sensitive to the effects of urban development, while existing landscape hazards and nuisance land uses jeopardize the quality of the urban form. Despite these phenomena, there is no comprehensive land use analysis or development management plan for Northwest Arkansas. This study presents a comprehensive environmental analysis of three sub-watersheds within the Illinois River watershed in Northwest Arkansas. Based on this analysis, the authors recommend planning overlays …

The Veterans Memorial Field House In Huntington, W.Va.: A History, Stan Bumgardner

Marshall History

“When Ernie Salvatore sat at ring side on fight night. When the crowd noise could be heard all the way across the street in the parking lot of the B & B Super Market. When brightly colored spotlights chased the stars of Holiday on Ice around the rink, and the “Clown Prince” of basketball, Meadowlark Lemon, and the Harlem Globetrotters entertained children of every age. It was a place where families went ice skating, elephants occupied center ring, and the latest fashion in automobiles covered the entire floor in 1957.” Writer Clyde Beal recounted these vivid memories of Huntington’s Veterans …

Walking In The Land Of Cars: Automobile-Pedestrian Accidents In Hillsborough County, Florida, Marc Aaron Poling 2012 University of South Florida

Walking In The Land Of Cars: Automobile-Pedestrian Accidents In Hillsborough County, Florida, Marc Aaron Poling

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Analyses of traffic accidents are often focused on the characteristics of the accident event and hence do not take into account the broader neighborhood contexts in which accidents are located. This thesis seeks to extend empirical analyses of accidents by understanding the link between accidents and their surroundings. The case study for this thesis is Hillsborough County, Florida, within which the city of Tampa is located. The Tampa Bay region ranks very high in terms of accident rates within U.S. metropolitan areas and is also characterized by transport policies which favor private automobiles over mass transit options, making it an …

Metropolisation and urban sprawl are recurrences of recent developments in European territories, and particularly the Mediterranean. However, these phenomena often oppose the idea of environmental conservation and respect for natural and economic equilibriums. CREPUD-MED has allowed a group of European experts, local elected officials, academics, architects, planners, geographers, sociologists… to combine their skills and to question the notion of territorial development understood as a “project-process.” Four case-studies of four European regions are presented within: Val de Durance (Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), Funo (Provincia di Bologna), Metropolitan Region of Barcelona and Eleonas (Athens); in the form of an atlas, as a knowledge …

Greyfield Site Redevelopment Analysis, Christopher J. Shacklett, Andrew Whittemore 2012 University of Texas at Arlington

Greyfield Site Redevelopment Analysis, Christopher J. Shacklett, Andrew Whittemore

Planning Masters Professional Reports

This report provides a framework for the research and analysis that will assist in understanding the issues leading to the decline of once successful shopping centers into greyfields. Inner-ring suburbs in the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex deal with this issue which is caused by aging centers and infrastructure coupled with increased competition from newer, faster growing suburbs offering increased financial incentives and newer shopping centers. Through an analysis of varying definitions of greyfields, a definition that represents the most typical greyfield sites affecting inner-ring suburbs will be chosen. Based on the chosen definition, this report focuses on two sites …

This model was only applicable for the identified elements or tools under green infrastructure as defined by this study. This enabled clear and concise definitions and more readily identified the criteria and their parameters. The scope of the model’s applicability …

Variation In Commercial Property Tax Appraisal Accuracy In Texas, James Howard Johnson 2012 University of Texas at Arlington

Variation In Commercial Property Tax Appraisal Accuracy In Texas, James Howard Johnson

Planning Dissertations

Article 8 of the Texas Constitution requires property taxation to be "equal and uniform," and state law requires nearly all real property to be assessed at 100% of market value. Despite these requirements, evidence exists that the appraisals of some high-value commercial properties, specifically downtown class A office buildings, vary widely from market value. According to the state Comptroller's Property Value Studies, residential property tends to be fully valued for tax purposes. An equity issue arises from the apparent undervaluation of high-value commercial properties, which typically are owned by wealthy individuals and institutional investors. While residential property tends to be homogeneous …

Monetary Policy In The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States: How Important Is The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank In Crafting Policy, Moses Pologne 2012 University of Texas at Arlington

Monetary Policy In The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States: How Important Is The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank In Crafting Policy, Moses Pologne

Planning Dissertations

The research examines the effectiveness of monetary policy in improving standards of living at the local level in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States. The study postulates that monetary policy should not be viewed strictly as the responsibility of the national government, instead, under specific conditions it can be viewed as a local economic development strategy. A combination of interviews and econometric techniques are applied to determine whether monetary policy is as useful as other more widely discussed variables in urban planning and policy making. The findings support monetary policy as a local economic development strategy in situations where certain …

Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham 2012 CUNY Graduate Center

Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham

Publications and Research

In post-Katrina New Orleans, housing and community development (HCD) advocates clashed over the future of public housing. This case study examines the evolution of and limits to a human right to housing frame introduced by one nongovernmental organization (NGO). Ferree’s concept of the discursive opportunity structure and Bourdieu’s social field ground this NGO’s failure to advance a radical economic human rights frame, given its choice of a political inside strategy that opened up for HCD NGOs after Hurricane Katrina. Strategic and ideological differences within the field limited the efficacy of this rights-based frame, which was seen as politically radical and …
