An Exploratory Study Was Conducted to Evaluate a Web-Based Learning Module for Teaching Geographic Information Systems to Civil Engineering Students within the Context of a Problem Related to Crash Data Analysis. This Module is One Part of a National Science Foundation Course, Curricula, and Laboratory Improvement Project in Which GIS Modules Are Being Developed for Several Areas of Civil Engineering. the Module Was Used as a Laboratory Assignment in a Transportation Engineering Course. This paper presents a comparative study of two different drainage designs in a 10,930-ha new town development of The Woodlands, Texas. Open surface drainage by shallow grassed swales was used in the first two subdivisions that were developed with ecological approaches. Open surface drainage mimics the natural flow regime and is regarded to mitigate development impacts on watershed. In other later subdivisions, the drainage design shifted back to a conventional stormwater drainage system, that is, curb and gutter, drop inlet, and underground piping, known to concentrate stormwater and lead to downstream flooding. Quantifying diapycnal mixing in stably stratified turbulence is fundamental to the understanding and modeling of geophysical flows. Data of diapycnal mixing from direct numerical simulations of homogeneous stratified turbulence and from grid turbulence experiments, are analyzed to investigate the scaling of the diapycnal diffusivity. In these homogeneous flows the instantaneous diapycnal diffusivity is given exactly by Kd= ∈ρ/ (∂ ρ /∂z)²where ∈ρ is the dissipation rate of density fluctuations, and ∂ ρ /∂z is the mean density gradient. The HOPE VI program enacted in 1992 represented a shift in public housing by addressing resident's needs through physical design improvements, self-sufficiency programs, and the deconcentration of poverty. Funding through HOPE VI allowed local housing authorities to demolish deteriorated public housing units and replace them with new income-inclusive housing units. The "hope" would be that low income residents would interact with middle income residents to access resources that are normally beyond the reach of low income individuals. The HEARTH Act of 2009 expands care to people experiencing homelessness by giving communities more freedom in allocation of their resources based on their ability to produce measurable results. Although regulations have not been released on this legislation, communities, called Continuums of Care, can prepare for program changes by monitoring current data for areas in need of growth within the system. One of the goals included in the statute is to move a homeless family from an emergency shelter to permanent supportive housing within 30 days. The main purpose of this thesis is to (1) study the impacts of urbanization on environmental resources, and (2) propose land use planning strategies to avoid or at least minimize the impacts from future land use planning and decision making process. Urbanization, one of the major drivers of land use change, has profound impacts on environmental resources. This article seeks to evaluate Rem Koolhaas’s investigations of the sub-Saharan megapolis of Lagos, Nigeria. The literature on Lagos produced by Koolhaas and the Harvard Project on the City has been both lauded and criticized by several sources. Less attention, however, has been paid to two documentary films chronicling their Lagos “research studio.” The central component of this article is a close reading of these two films. It concludes that the research studio is a potentially effective method for learning about cities, though what …

This review of Richard Whitman's Architecture, Print Culture, and the Public Sphere in Eighteenth-Century France (Routledge, 2007) examines the relationship between architectural discourse and political power in Frame from 1671 until the end of the ancient regime. The volume successfully foregrounds the socio-political functions of architectural writing, though the use of Habermas' thesis proves to be less convincing. Some of his arguments also tend to be simplistic or schematics .Nonetheless, this volume is a valuable contribution to the study of French architecture during the eighteenth century.

One important strain of this thinking is how to promote a city where daily needs can be satisfied on foot. Using the tools of Central Place Theory and Demand Threshold analysis, this work studies the required population density to bring grocery shopping within pedestrian range of the population. Local governments are beginning to require new, privately constructed and funded buildings to be “green” buildings. Instead of creating their own, locally-derived definitions of green buildings, many municipalities are adopting an existing private standard created by members of the building industry: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). This Article explains and assesses the privately promulgated LEED standards. It argues that the translation of LEED standards, which were intended to be voluntary, into law raises several theoretical and practical problems. Small businesses are considered important engines for job growth and economic development by policy makers worldwide. One of the most commonly cited constraints of small businesses is a lack of access to capital. To address this constraint, small business loan guarantee programs have been established in over 100 countries. There are a variety of types of guarantee funds, with the most significant differences being which borrowers are eligible for guarantees, and how borrowers are approved for guarantees. The Southern Thames St. Neighborhood is located on the west side of Newport, Rhode Island, and occupies the southern half of its harbor. This neighborhood is an outstanding example of 19th-century immigrant neighborhood built according to local, vernecular traditions. This area was home to a substantial portion of Newport's Irish immigrant population, a working class group who arrived in Newport between 1820 and 1920.

This paper presents two approaches of estimating the control force magnitude in the building structure's seismic design. One is by spectrum average in frequency domain, and the other is by nondeterministic Monte Carlo analysis in time domain. the spectrum method is proposed to find the estimation by averaging the system's frequency response with an earthquake spectrum as a weighting factor. the nondeterministic method is based on sets of potential ground motions generated numerically. the approaches are developed in the concept of performance design, with studies based on the site potential seismic hazard and presenting results at different levels of displacement …
