The Effects Of Biculturalism, Bicultural Identity Integration, And Emotional Ambivalence On Attitudes Toward Diversity, Said Mohammed Al-Riyami

Integrating affective events theory (Weiss & Cropanzano, 1996), the frame switching model (Hong, Morris, Chiu, Benet-Martinez, 2000) and social identity theory (Tajfel, Flament, Billing, & Bundy, 1971; Tajfel, 1974; Turner, Brown, & Tajfel 1979; Tajfel, 1981), I argue that biculturalism is both positively associated with emotional ambivalence and attitudes toward diversity. I also hypothesize that bicultural identity integration (BII) is negatively associated with emotional ambivalence and moderates the relationship between biculturalism and emotional ambivalence. Finally, emotional ambivalence partially mediates the relationship between biculturalism and attitudes toward diversity. I conducted two studies in a South-Western university in the US. Investments in public infrastructure such as highways, airports, mass transit, and stadiums can increase adjacent property values, generating a value premium for private developers and adjacent property owners. A portion of this value can be "captured" as public revenue via property taxes to assist financing such improvements. States and local governments aim to anticipate and capture the economic value created by transportation accessibility. While value capture (VC) represents an opportunity for regional agencies to recapture some transportation infrastructure costs, it is not clear how much value is added by the infrastructure in a particular region. This research and design project examines the philosophies and psychological factors of aging in place and universal design, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), and how they can be realistically applied in interior design for people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal illness with an approximate two- to five-year prognosis. The case study explores the design needs and preferences of one couple living with ALS. Analysis of the case study suggests that a complete universal design or ADAAG-compliant overhaul in the home is ill-advised for these subjects, given their modest budget and limited …

One of the most important issues in geotechnical engineering is the slope stability analysis for determination of the factor of safety and the probable slip surface. Finite Element Method (FEM) is well suited for numerical study of advanced geotechnical problems. Kafkaesque, Orwellian, eerie, surreal, bizarre, grotesque, alien, wacky, fascinating, dystopian, illusive, theatrical, antic, haunting, apocalyptic: these are just a few of the vaguely science-fictional adjectives that are now associated with North Korea. At the same time, North Korea has become an oddly convenient trope for a certain aesthetic – an uncanny opacity; an ominous mystique – that many writers and artists have exploited to generate striking science-fictional effects in texts with little or no connection to North Korean reality. Drawing from the prior work of McNair and Paretti (2010), this study investigates how language practices and design artifacts mediate the interactions among novice and expert designers to shape the nature of design, and specifically design learning. By analyzing data collected from two design courses in different fields, this study addresses two research questions: 1) how do language practices mediate the interactions between design mentors and design learners; and 2) how do design artifacts mediate these interactions between mentors and learners? After graduation former students are prepared to hold several different jobs in the industrial, commercial and residential areas; some work as independent contractors for various clients and projects, while others may be hired by firms on an ongoing basis.

The purpose of this study is to understand how users of Camp Santanoni perceive and interpret the visual harmony between historic rustic architectural design and the natural environment and if these meanings are congruent with the design recommendations from Downing, Olmsted, and Wicks. The main goal is to understand the congruent relationships between how a designer wished to achieve visual harmony between buildings and landscapes, and how people actually perceive this interaction. The meaningful relationships between users (the people) of Camp Santanoni’s buildings and the surrounding landscape (the place) were documented.

Architecture has the ability to confront its own crisis of spectacle by offering a different illusion. Annexed in 1910, Manchester was the industrial hub of the city and home to the Chesterfield Railroad, the first railway in Virginia and used to transport coal.
