Empirically Derived Effective Stiffness Expressions For Concrete Walls, Andrew Mock, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma
Architectural Engineering
In most cases, analysis to determine component demands for seismic design of concrete buildings employs linear elastic models in which reduced, effective component stiffnesses are used. This document i) reviews the recommendations for defining the effective flexural, shear and axial stiffness of concrete walls that are included in current design codes, standards and guidelines and ii) compares these recommendations with stiffness expressions derived directly from experimental data by the authors and others. Section 2 reviews existing empirically derived and code‐, standard‐, and guideline‐based expressions for the effective stiffness of concrete walls. Section 3 presents the process used by the authors …

Architectural Engineering
Flexural concrete walls (i.e., walls the yield in flexural prior to failure) are used commonly as the lateral load resisting system for mid‐ and high‐rise buildings on the West Coast. They are relatively stiff under service‐level loading, can take on various configurations to accommodate architectural constraints, and are generally assumed to exhibit ductile response under severe earthquake loading. Despite heavy reliance on concrete walls, relatively little research has been done to investigate the earthquake performance of walls with modern design details. Few data exist characterizing the performance of modern walls under variable levels of earthquake loading or the impact of …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
People living in urban areas have an aspiration to be in touch with nature, attractive environments, places where they can recreate, play and have leisure that enhances their health and well-being.To help achieve these desires landscape elements play a vital role and thus become an integrated part of everyday urban life. Resilient landscape can help to achieve "sustainability" at a macro level, "health" at a miso level and "well-being" at a micro level in urban areas. Most people spend maximum time at their home, experiencing various landscape elements during daily routines. These elements knowingly or unknowingly happen to be the …

Neighborhood Park For Children As A Resilient Landscape:In Terms Of Its Physical Feature, Silvia Alam, Shuahana Sharmin Choiti
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Due to the recent apartment development pattern in Dhaka city, the residential building sites are no longer providing open spaces for children's play areas. Scarcity of open places decreases children'soutdoor activity, which causes them to suffer in terms of physical and mental health. This crisis can be mitigated by public open spaces like parks, plazas and playing fi elds. Therefore neighborhood parks as a resilient landscape can play an important role in children's social, physical and psychological wellbeing at a local and proximal scale. The success of a neighborhood park for children depends on their appearance into the park at …

Discovering Landscape Urbanism Within Resilient Landscape:Searching From Natural Setting To Structured Ground, Ayasha Siddiqua
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Settlements in urban and rural areas treat landscapes differently. In urban areas within the structured layouts, the landscape is likely to be dominated by human activities; settlements in natural settingsrequire a more sensitive approach to landscapes. But in both cases landscapes are strong, driving forces to guide settlement design. This can range from details to larger arenas, direction of future requirements, adjustments to future growth, coping with probable diffi culties and providing alternate solutions. Landscape urbanism has inherited some issues and concepts derived from resilient landscapes. To search for urbanism within a resilient landscape this paper examines two distinct examples …

Lao Immigrant Cultural Adaptation In Southwestern Louisiana's Urban Landscapes, Phanat Xanamane
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
In their 30-year history in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Lao immigrants have continually reasserted their identity through various social, economic, and cultural modes connected to a set of embedded relationsor ecologies. A unique set of adapted spatial typologies that reinforced Lao village culture and social networks on multiple scales emerge from the translation of the ecologies. Mappings, diagrams, and photomontages help reveal these settlement patterns and adaptations of space and building types. The paper offers a framework for how contemporary cultural groups can be studied through the lens of architectural and urban design theory. It shows how social groups like immigrants …

Non-English speaking workers constitute a disproportionately high number of workers involved in postdisaster reconstruction. Additionally, the rate of fatality among these workers is higher than the industry average. Research shows this population is more prone to unsafe behaviors in the working environment, conceivably because many of these workers are sent into the field prior to any formalized training. Recent studies show that the native culture of construction workers can impact risk-taking behavior. While numerous researchers have attempted to develop training materials for Hispanic workers, the number of studies that consider the impact of native culture on safety behavior is minimal. …

The Last Decade, Significant Advances Have Been Made in Investigating, Understanding and Predicting the Flow Characteristics during Pumping of Concrete. Kaplan Developed Theoretical Equations based on the Rheological and Tribological Properties of Concrete to Predict Pumping Pressures. Several Tribometers Were Developed to Characterize the Flow Properties of Concrete Along a Smooth Wall, But None of Them Allows the Use of Highly Workable Concretes. the Main Reason is that for the Calculation of the Yield Stress and Viscous Constant of the Lubrication Layer, the Concrete is Not Allowed to Be Sheared. in This Paper, a New Design for the Concrete Tribometer …

Virtual Surface Temperature Sensor For Multi-Zone Commercial Buildings, Yuebin Yu, Denchai Woradechjumroen, Daihong Yu
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Multi-zone structure is commonly used in small commercial office buildings, retail stores and supermarket. While there is no adjacent wall between the zones, the impact of a neighbor zone on the current zone can be approximated and analyzed through the application of virtual walls. It is critical to accurately estimate the virtual wall surface temperature in order to evaluate the model uncertainty and apply improved supervisory control on multiple rooftop air-conditioning units (RTUs). We propose an innovative virtual surface temperature sensor based on system-identification to solve this challenge. The validation of the virtual temperature model is processed by the three …

Shallow Flat Soffit Precast Concrete Floor System, George Morcous, Maher Tadros
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
A precast concrete floor system that eliminates the need for column corbels and beam ledges while being very shallow. The main advantages of the present system include a span to-depth ratio of 30, a flat soffit, economy, consistency with prevailing erection techniques, and fire and corrosion protection. The present system consists of continuous precast columns, prestressed rectangular beams, hollow-core planks, and cast-in-place composite topping. Testing results have indicated that a 12 inch deep flat soffit precast floor system has adequate capacity to carry gravity loads (including 100 psf live load) in a 30 ft x 30 ft bay size. Testing …

Summary Of Large-Scale Nonplanar Reinforced Concrete Wall Tests, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Andrew Mock, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma
Architectural Engineering
Nonplanar wall configurations are prevalent in engineering practice, yet relatively little research has addressed nonplanar walls and the earthquake response of these components remains poorly understood. A recent experimental test program conducted by the authors investigated the earthquake response of modern, ACI Code compliant C‐shaped walls subjected to unidirectional and bidirectional lateral loading. To compare the results of this study with previous experimental investigations conducted by others, this document examines laboratory tests of slender nonplanar walls available in the literature. Response histories, damage patterns, drift capacity and failure mechanisms are used to characterize the behavior of each nonplanar wall test …

This paper presents the outcome of a study of an I-section Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) beam including retrofitting for damage effects. A total of three beam tests were conducted in the following sequence: GFRP beam with no retrofitting and a single mid-span web brace; the partially damaged (cracked) beam with GFRP plates used for retrofitting; and the retrofitted beam re-tested with the lateral brace at the top flange level. Both cracking and lateral-torsional buckling behavior is studied and experimental load-deflection relationships recorded. Using the mechanical properties of GFRP based on the experimental data, theoretical predictions are made for the …

The Plots Of Alexanderplatz: A Study Of The Space That Shaped Weimar Berlin, Carrie Grace Latimer
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper explores Alexanderplatz during the Weimar Period in Berlin. It is looked at from three different perspectives: historical urban plans, Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1980's film adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. Through these three mediums, an argument forms that Alexanderplatz functioned as both a major transit space for movement of transportation and pedestrians, but also the transit space for the movement of ideas and information.

The Effects Of Biculturalism, Bicultural Identity Integration, And Emotional Ambivalence On Attitudes Toward Diversity, Said Mohammed Al-Riyami
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Integrating affective events theory (Weiss & Cropanzano, 1996), the frame switching model (Hong, Morris, Chiu, Benet-Martinez, 2000) and social identity theory (Tajfel, Flament, Billing, & Bundy, 1971; Tajfel, 1974; Turner, Brown, & Tajfel 1979; Tajfel, 1981), I argue that biculturalism is both positively associated with emotional ambivalence and attitudes toward diversity. I also hypothesize that bicultural identity integration (BII) is negatively associated with emotional ambivalence and moderates the relationship between biculturalism and emotional ambivalence. Finally, emotional ambivalence partially mediates the relationship between biculturalism and attitudes toward diversity. I conducted two studies in a South-Western university in the US. Participants were …
