In this study, shear-based parameterizations of turbulent mixing in the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL) are proposed. A relevant length-scale estimate for the mixing length LM of the turbulent momentum field is constructed from the turbulent kinetic energy Ek and the mean shear rate S as. Using observational data from two field campaigns-the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment and the 1999 Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study (CASES-99)- is shown to have a strong correlation with LM. This study focuses on understanding the hydraulic design of baffled contact tanks using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In particular, we address the key question: for a given footprint of a rectangular tank with a specified inlet width (Winlet), how does the hydraulic efficiency of a baffled tank depend on the configuration of internal baffles? Conference papers
This paper formulates a notion of material-oriented design in wood, proposing an alternative ontology where the material is seen as an equal rights partner to the designer. Further, I contrast the constructivist and evolutionary types of management, where in the latter systems are produced with minimal waste and energy expense. I discuss the implications of the approach on an example of five experimental projects, including my own in more detail. I advance that material-oriented design challenges the established form-matter relationship, design process, our understanding of authorship and bears an environmentally friendly potential.

Drawing on case studies of foraging in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, we point to foraging landscapes and practices within diverse urban forest spaces. We examine these spaces in relation to U.S. conservation and development processes and the effects of management and governance on species valued by foragers. These case studies reveal the everyday landscapes of urban foraging and suggest that ideas about what constitutes the suite of appropriate human-environment interactions in the sustainable city are contested and accommodated in diverse ways.

Making Thought Matter: Postmodern Models for Material Thinking, crosses disciplines to trace the aesthetic contexts of Postmodern American artists whose work employs the senses to make legible creative and critical modes of synthesis. I contend that in practicing a material thinking—the artistic mobilization of the intimate and affective qualities of conceptual and physical surfaces—these artists reinsert perceptual knowledge and bodily agency into Postmodernism’s “emptied” surfaces. Consequently, their work opposes late theorists of Postmodernity who characterized contemporary artistic forms as immaterial, abstract, and emotionally deficient. This paper presents a near-future scenario for urban China, derived through application of scenario planning techniques to extrapolate components of a possible urban future, based on analysis ofrecent and current digitally-mediated urban spatial practice in Chinese cities. The scenario provides a framework for exploring the interplay of top-down modes of control and bottom-up "performance" in the digital city; the co-forming relationship between urban spatial practices and the appropriation of digital communications networks for social and spatial experimentation; and the culturally and socially conditioned roles that digital technologies play in the formation and evolution of urban morphology and urban societies.
