Large-eddy simulations are performed to investigate how three-dimensional canopy geometry affects the front propagation of an incoming gravity current under a given initial forcing. A regular array of rigid square cylinders are used to represent the distributed canopy elements. It is shown that the conventional geometrical parameter of submerged canopies in constant-density flows (ah, where a is the frontal area per canopy volume and h is the canopy height) is misleading when applied to buoyancy-driven flows due to the additional complexity arising from the internal density gradients. Curing by CO₂ is a way to utilize CO₂ to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Placing early-age cement paste in a CO₂ chamber or pressure vessel accelerates its strength development. Cement carbonation is attributed to the quickened strength development, and CO₂ uptake can be quantitatively evaluated by measuring CO₂ gas pressure loss in the pressure vessel. A decrease in CO₂ gas pressure is observed with all cement pastes and mortar samples regardless of the mix proportion and the casting method; one method involves compacting a low water-to-cement ratio mix, and the other method comprises a …

Researchers at the California Polytechnic State University [1], San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), recently tested a slender RC wall with vertical and horizontal reinforcement ratios approaching ACI 318-14 [2] code minimum (ρl= ρh= 0.37%) and no boundary elements. Results from this wall test will be presented and contrasted with a set of lightly reinforced walls, specimens C1-C3 tested by Lu et al. This paper summarizes analyses of structural damage to reinforced concrete buildings seen after the 2017 Mexico City earthquake. With respect to the 2017 earthquake, the authors are part of a multi-institution National Science Foundation (NSF) RAPID effort that involved several in-field data collection missions yielding a dataset with detailed metadata for nearly 120 buildings. This data has been analyzed in conjunction with a high-density data set of around 1400 buildings from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Alvin Lucier’s I am sitting in a room (1969) is an icon of experimental music and sound art. The sizable literature addressing the aesthetic and philosophical implications of this piece rarely discusses the performance practice beyond what is indicated in the score itself. This is problematic for two reasons: 1) The meaning that is derived from the piece often hinges not just on what sounds are obtained, but on how they are obtained. 2) Over the past 50 years, changes in the performance practice have altered what constitutes the work: magnetic tape was used until 2000 when it was replaced …

The purpose of this study was to determine the strength of local casuarina glauca patchwood under artificial weathering presenting the changes of strength of wood along fibers. The study involved wood of similar density - half factorial design experiment was used with four factors to use fewer samples to have a total of 8. The specimens were exposed to artificial weathering consisting of soaking wood in water, drying at 60 °C, and exposure to UV radiation. Three-step aging cycle was repeated 8 times. In general, the tested wood species changed their compressive strength differently under the influence of artificial weathering. …

This is important since ELRs can be a solution to many issues, such as alleviating congestion, increasing multimodality along roadways, and reducing maintenance costs. ELRs in both North America and Australia were observed.
