This project examines existing pollinator habitats on the University of Kentucky campus and identifies areas of need based on the connectivity of the existing habitats with the use of nontraditional landscape design methods. Pollinators are crucial to Kentucky ecosystems and the pollination of native plants. Given Kentucky’s central location, it offers an abundance of opportunity to create more pollinator habitats and aid in pollinator migration. This study examines the overall size and quality of existing pollinator habitats on campus to identify areas fit for the implementation of new gardens. Pollinators such as bees are unable to travel the long distances …

Political Economy Of The Production Of Heritage Space In A Centro Histórico: Attracting Real Estate Capital, Expelling People. The Case Of Cartagena (Colombia), Camilo Rey-Sabogal
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Cartagena is a South American city whose historical built environment has been recognized as a World Heritage Site due to the preservation of elements of the Spanish military architecture of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. This recognition promoted a tourist and real estate boom in the Centro Histórico and, as a result, its inhabitants have faced gentrification dynamics that are expelling them to other areas of the city. During the last 15 years, these dynamics have shown a strong acceleration. Therefore, the Centro Histórico is experiencing, on the one hand, huge inflows of capital for the purchase of properties …

Nationalism And The Modernisation Of Thai Architectural Education At Chulalongkorn University In The 1920s And 1930s, Chomchon Fusinpaiboon, Thomas Coomans, Pirasri Povatong
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This paper examines the modernization of Thai architecture through the establishment of Thailand’s first architecture school, its curriculum, its architecture, and the pivotal role of the first generation of Thai architecture professors, who had been educated in England and France. It demonstrates how the establishment of the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, stemmed from the Siamese government’s growing nationalism that aimed to end foreign domination in both Siam’s construction industry and international diplomacy. The process, however, involved the adoption of a western curriculum — which was considered modern — and adapting it to be more Thai for nationalist purposes. …

This study aims to explore ways in which contemporary vernacular houses can be created to be responsive to environmental, socio-cultural, and economic conditions. Within the selected three provinces of Chachoengsao, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok, our goal was to propose possible prototypes for contemporary vernacular houses that respond to current requirements while still sustaining their regional characteristics. Current problems and changing housing demands were studied along with input from local people. From field surveys and focus groups, the research found that neither “traditional” nor “modern” solutions will suffice, so the prototypes need to strike a balance between these models. Outcomes developed …

Understanding Thai Urban Pedestrian Culture During Noon Break : How Sidewalk Users Experience The Walking Infrastructure In Bangkok, Thailand, Shusak Janpathompong, Akinobu Murakami
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The noon break or lunch hour in Bangkok’s central business district (CBD) is when pedestrians wander around for various activities and purposes, in addition to having a meal, within a limited time frame. It is the only break from their daily working routines for energy recovery or socializing, which, in turn, increases readiness to continue working in the afternoon. Commercial activities preferred by pedestrians during this break contribute to increased economic activity. Since pedestrian behavior depends on the cultural context, this research aims to understand Thai urban pedestrian culture that benefits the public, both socially and economically, and to investigate …

This study clarified the structure in which virtual social capital (SC) affects the quality of life (QOL) and promotes urban resilience in a metropolitan area. It has been determined that assistance from neighboring residents and acquaintances is essential for community resilience and is considered one of the critical factors in urban systems' resilience. These social ties among residents are called SC. In today's metropolises, social ties with others are shifting from face-to-face relationships to virtual relationships. In this study, virtual SC is defined as a weak virtual network formed among people through social media, email, telephones, letters, which is less …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Using an up-to-date panel dataset that covers 88 countries over a 38-year period (1991–2018), this paper revisits the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) to measure environmental degradation (CO2, methane, nitrous Oxide, PM 2.5, HFC, PFC and SF6) in relation to GDP per capita. This study confirms the inverted-U relation for CO2 emissions, with the estimated turning point at $13,233, but also identifies a U relation in the case of PM 2.5. Furthermore, in a regional analysis of both CO2 and PM 2.5, with special reference to the MENA region, it finds gaps between actual CO2 emissions and their fitted values. We …
