Towards Good Governance In Upgrading Deprived Areas: An Approach To Empower Participatory Management In Egypt, Mohammed S. Ali

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Slums are a problem facing the whole world as a result of poor housing policies and rapid urbanization. Previous Egyptian housing policies created the problem of slums from scratch. The Egyptian government tries to eliminate slums with centralized policies, but it does not succeed. Egypt recently recognized the need to participate in slum upgrading through community partnership. Previous upgrading policies did not perform as required due to their distance from a participatory and fair representation of stakeholders. The independent participatory intermediary model achieves great results if it has decentralized decision-making. The problem is the relation between the governing parties in …

America's Finest Housing Crisis: Racialized Housing And Suburban Development, Vicenta Martinez Govea 2021 University of San Diego

America's Finest Housing Crisis: Racialized Housing And Suburban Development, Vicenta Martinez Govea

Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards

US. Government operations between 1940-1950 brought unprecedented direct and indirect employment opportunities to San Diego, exacerbating an already growing housing shortage. To accommodate the thousands of new defense workers, the government produced the largest defense housing project to date in the small neighborhood of Linda Vista. However, this opportunity and largesse was extended primarily to a select group of white working-class families who had access to defense jobs and, consequently, subsidized housing. Military presence in San Diego during World War II shaped the design of homes and exclusively allocated housing, as both shelter and financial instrument, to white working-class families …

"Introduction" To Presenting Difficult Pasts Through Architecture: Converting National Socialist Sites To Documentation Centers, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study deals with the question of how architectural design, when applied to historical places, can assist in bringing an extremely difficult – notable and troubling – past to the present in meaningful ways. In particular, it examines postwar architectural designs that converted National Socialist perpetrators’ places into documentation centers on National Socialism whose explicit purpose is, above all, to present and discuss the community’s involvement in the National Socialist ideology and actions.

Although the cases I have selected for close study vary stylistically and in many other ways, these centers have a number of common attributes that make the …

Why Won’T Grandma Cross The Road? Neighborhood Perceptions And Walking Behavior Among Older Adults In Lexington, Kentucky, Sadie Middleton

Theses and Dissertations--Urban and Environmental Design

Many urban places contain subtle details that can unintentionally deter pedestrian activity. These details can be assessed through six themes: safety, comfort, pedestrian infrastructure, aesthetics, proximity, and ease of navigation. Adults over age 65 may have more concerns about walking in urban settings than people in other age groups. This study identifies urban design elements that encourage and discourage walking among older adults and makes recommendations for design improvements. Study participants (n= 67) completed an online survey about walking behaviors, perceptions of health and community, and perceptions of seven unidentified scenes of pedestrian environments in Lexington, Kentucky. Findings suggest that …
