On A New Method For Interior Lighting Design, 2015 Technological University Dublin
On A New Method For Interior Lighting Design, James Duff
Doctoral
In 2009, Christopher Cuttle began to challenge the suitability of the metrics contained within current lighting design standards and guidance. In short, Cuttle proposed a move away from providing an amount of light that relates to the difficulty of a visual task and instead, providing an amount of light that relates to the brightness of a space. This sense of brightness would be estimated by a new lighting metric, Mean Room Surface Exitance. The research presented in this thesis strove to examine, critically evaluate, analyse and investigate the merit of changing indoor lighting standards to include Mean Room Surface Exitance. …
Sustainability In Interior Design: Incorporating Economy, Equity, And Ecology Into The Built Environment, 2015 University of Nebraska at Kearney
Sustainability In Interior Design: Incorporating Economy, Equity, And Ecology Into The Built Environment, Emily Smith
Undergraduate Research Journal
In today’s culture sustainability has become a buzzword, especially in the design community. In the context of design, sustainability proposes to meet the needs of the current population without taking away from future generations (DiDomenica, 2010). This concept can extend further than the design world, because interior designers greatly impact the world by determining what kinds of buildings are being designed and whether or not they are truly sustainable. Sustainability has three parts that are all interconnected: ecology, economy, and equity. Ecology seeks to protect the environment and preserve it for future generations. Economy seeks to do the same thing …
The Dynamics Of Daylighting At A Residential College Building With The Internal Courtyard Arrangement, 2015 Universiti Malaya
The Dynamics Of Daylighting At A Residential College Building With The Internal Courtyard Arrangement, Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin
Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin
Dayasari residential college building was designed with the internal courtyard that allows for numerous implementations of bioclimatic design strategies, especially on daylighting. The field measurement was conducted at eight unoccupied student rooms, selected as samples to represent ten scenarios and orientations that concerned with the level of radiation and penetration of sunlight. This study reveals the contribution of the internal courtyard in the residential college which allows the daylight penetration at the corridor areas and interior of the rooms through the transom over the entrance door, up to ten hours daily. Different amounts of daylight were measured in specific room …
A Modern Craftsman Revival, 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University
A Modern Craftsman Revival, Eugene M. Rader
Theses and Dissertations
Introducing concepts of Craftsman kit construction to the interior, as well as modern technology to lessen the cost of handcrafted details, opens the possibility to new methods of modular design in which interior units are configured around structural skeletons and central base points that provide supply lines to residential units. One example is Dutch design firm Minale-Maeda’s Keystones, a 3D printed connector that holds together any necessary components, like furniture. These keystones can be printed at home and save time and the need to obtain anything but essential components (website). The design firm works to create an “ongoing awareness of …

Creating Place For A Placeless Generation, Laura Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Making up one quarter of the current United States population, some 80 million Generation Y-ers are changing the ways in which we live, work and play. Dubbed “Millennials” this population is comprised of those individuals born between 1980 and 2000. This generation is the first to have been raised with cell phones, the internet, and reality television. The “Selfie” or “Me Generation” is snubbed for narcissism and an instant gratification attitude. Yet on the whole Millennials have progressive values, are well educated, are conscious of their health and are optimistic about the future despite coming of age during the Great …

The Immersive Media Library @ Vcu, 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University
The Immersive Media Library @ Vcu, Michael Rosenthal-Mix
Theses and Dissertations
Answering the call issued by John Underkoffler in 2010 about the future of UI, I have imagined the Immersive Media Library (IML) as an annex of the main VCU library, offering a concentration of visually immersive spaces to compliment the space the university is already building in the renovated Cabell Library. The design is new in that the emphasis is placed on the collaboration between librarians and visitors in creating new work. Focusing on the interpersonal might be unexpected from program with such an emphasis on new technology - but I see it as vital part of the new computing …

This project aims to design a community wellness space that is focused on prevention, resilience and self-management. A new typology of a community-anchored wellness clinic …
The Effects Of Sustainability As A Positive Attribute On Equine Therapy Design: An Interdisciplinary Study, 2015 University of Akron Main Campus
The Effects Of Sustainability As A Positive Attribute On Equine Therapy Design: An Interdisciplinary Study, Andria Sinclair
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Interdisciplinary studies have brought benefits to introducing new solutions to the traditional environment and traditional therapies. Sustainability in relation to design has been suggested in 2006, by the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostic (CBPD) at Carnegie Mellon University to incorporate daylight, solar, heat and ventilation of the natural environment combined with the innovations of current technologies (Whitmore, 2011). This paper will look at how sustainability plays a key role of benefits including those that are health associated with equine therapy design and its relationship to the patient, or end user. Interdisciplinary research in the therapeutic value of equine-human bonding …

Finding Addison Mizner: His Scrapbook Testimony, Suzanne B. Kane Asid
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Through historic archival research, this study focuses on the works of Florida architect Addison Mizner (1872-1933), credited with bringing Spanish/Mediterranean Revival architecture to Palm Beach, Florida in the early 20th century. This thesis is the first to study the works of Mizner through the perspective of his personal scrapbooks. In a state of advanced deterioration, Mizner’s scrapbooks are currently housed in Society of the Four Arts, King Library in Palm Beach, Florida. While a rare and treasured source of their own accord, the importance of the scrapbooks is elevated by the fact that many of Mizner’s buildings have been …
