Appraisal Of The Sustainability Of Compressed Stabilized Earthen Masonry, Elena Claire Hoff 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Appraisal Of The Sustainability Of Compressed Stabilized Earthen Masonry, Elena Claire Hoff

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Compressed stabilized earthen block (CSEB) masonry presents an environmentally and economically sustainable alternative to conventional residential construction materials such as clay brick masonry or concrete masonry (CMU). Earthen masonry is locally sourced and manufactured on site, thus minimizing costs associated with raw material extraction and transportation. Furthermore, CSEB requires very little use of electricity and water during both the manufacture and construction processes and it has excellent thermal resistivity while in use, allowing for additional cost and energy savings during most phases of its life cycle. Analyzing the life cycle trade-offs in a comparative study between CSEB and clay brick …

Investigation Of Subjective Perception And Objective Metrics Of Acoustic Room Diffusion, Jay Michael Bliefnick 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Investigation Of Subjective Perception And Objective Metrics Of Acoustic Room Diffusion, Jay Michael Bliefnick

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

While a variety of assessment methodologies have been proposed to quantify acoustic diffusivity within rooms, a link between these and the perception of diffusion has not been fully established. This study investigated various ways of analyzing diffusion, through both human perception and objective metrics. Numerous impulse response measurements were collected from a physical acoustics testing facility designed for diffusion research. This space featured reversible absorptive/diffusive/reflective wall panels, which allowed numerous testing configurations. One such setup investigated how changing the diffusivity of an isolated wall surface impacted diffusive room conditions. Alternatively, the effects diffuser configurations had on diffusive room conditions were …

Impact Of Cross Section, Web Reinforcement And Load History On The Seismic Performance Of Slender Concrete Walls, Anahid A. Behrouzi 2016 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Impact Of Cross Section, Web Reinforcement And Load History On The Seismic Performance Of Slender Concrete Walls, Anahid A. Behrouzi

Architectural Engineering

Many reinforced concrete buildings in seismic regions employ reinforced concrete shear walls as part of the lateral force resisting system and these walls often have non-planar cross-sectional geometries. To date, the majority of experimental tests on slender concrete walls have been conducted on planar walls which have been subject to low shear stress demands. An experimental program was developed to examine the response of flanged C-shaped walls with respect of load history and a computational parametric study was conducted to focus more specifically on the impact of web reinforcement for walls subject to a range of shear stress demands.

The Making Of A Rain-Induced Roof Collapse And The Lessons Learned For Our Profession, M. E. Parolini, John Lawson 2016 Smith Structural Group

The Making Of A Rain-Induced Roof Collapse And The Lessons Learned For Our Profession, M. E. Parolini, John Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Using a recent rain-induced roof collapse as a forensic case study, the authors will demonstrate a number of vital points of interest in the collaboration between structural engineers and other design disciplines. Citing a number of problems with the building’s design and the current code standards, this paper will investigate the avoidable events that led to a costly failure of the roof structure presented. As the practice of each construction design profession has become more specialized, communication among those professions on many overlapping design choices has eroded from common practice. This is true for one such area where multiple disciplines …

Elastic Field And Frequency Variation In Extendable Wind Turbine Blades, Jeswin John, Donald W. Radford, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy, Paul R. Heyliger

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The behaviors of tip displacement, maximum stress, and natural frequency of vibration as a function of blade length are investigated for extendable wind turbine blades. A three-dimensional linear elasticity finite-element model of the blade is used along with a typical profile and representative material properties. The quasi-linear response and free vibration behavior are investigated for a sequence of blade geometries. These estimates are intended to give approximate measures of expected changes in the elastic and dynamic field as the operating length changes and provide preliminary guidelines for this novel class of structure.

Case Study Of Quantifying Energy Loss Through Ceiling-Attic Recessed Lighting Fixtures Through 3d Numerical Simulation, Ri Na, Shengmao Lin, Zhigang Shen, Linxia Gu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Abstract Air leakage through recessed lighting fixtures has been identified as a common issue that causes extra energy consumption in residential buildings. However, few quantitative studies in this area were found. As such, a preliminary assessment of the magnitude of this type of energy loss was conducted by using three-dimensional (3D) transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. A hypothetical layout of recessed lighting fixtures was designed with boundary conditions of four different seasons, which were obtained from recorded roof/attic temperature data sets. The results of the study indicate that leakage of recessed lighting fixtures could be a significant channel of …

Mechanical And Thermal Evaluation Of Different Types Of Pcm-Concrete Composite Panels, Dervilla Niall, Oliver Kinnane, Roger West, Sarah Mccormack

Conference papers

ABSTRACT: Thermal mass indicates the ability of a material to store and release heat and is a function of the heat storage capacity of a material. The thermal mass of construction materials can be used to reduce the energy required for heating and cooling buildings. The heat storage capacity of concrete can be increased by incorporating phase change materials (PCMs) into the concrete and hence providing additional latent heat storage capacity. Research was carried out to compare the thermal behaviour of two different types of PCM/concrete composite panels. The first type of panel was formed by adding microencapsulated paraffin to …
