How We Compute N Matters To Estimates Of Mixing In Stratified Flows, Robert S. Arthur, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Jeffrey R. Koseff, Oliver B. Fringer 2017 Missouri University of Science and Technology

How We Compute N Matters To Estimates Of Mixing In Stratified Flows, Robert S. Arthur, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Jeffrey R. Koseff, Oliver B. Fringer

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most commonly used models for turbulent mixing in the ocean rely on a background stratification against which turbulence must work to stir the fluid. While this background stratification is typically well defined in idealized numerical models, it is more difficult to capture in observations. Here, a potential discrepancy in ocean mixing estimates due to the chosen calculation of the background stratification is explored using direct numerical simulation data of breaking internal waves on slopes. Two different methods for computing the buoyancy frequency, one based on a three-dimensionally sorted density field (often used in numerical models) and the other based on …

On The Propagation Of Gravity Currents Over And Through A Submerged Array Of Circular Cylinders, Jian Zhou, Claudia Cenedese, Tim Williams, Megan Ball, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Roger I. Nokes 2017 Missouri University of Science and Technology

On The Propagation Of Gravity Currents Over And Through A Submerged Array Of Circular Cylinders, Jian Zhou, Claudia Cenedese, Tim Williams, Megan Ball, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Roger I. Nokes

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The propagation of full-depth lock-exchange bottom gravity currents past a submerged array of circular cylinders is investigated using laboratory experiments and large eddy simulations. Firstly, to investigate the front velocity of gravity currents across the whole range of array density (i.e. the volume fraction of solids), the array is densified from a flatbed towards a solid slab under a particular submergence ratio, where is the flow depth and is the array height. The time-averaged front velocity in the slumping phase of the gravity current is found to first decrease and then increase with increasing. Next, a new geometrical framework consisting …

Stewardship Of International Bim Programmes: Lessons For Ireland, Barry Mcauley, Alan Hore, Roger West, Shiyao Kuang

Conference papers

The support by central government of national Building Information Modelling (BIM) programmes is common throughout the developed world today. To further understand how the different international governments have supported their BIM programmes the BIM Innovation Capability Programme (BICP) research team in Ireland recently completed a comprehensive Global BIM Study to help inform the National BIM Council (NBC) of Ireland in developing a Roadmap to Digital Transition for Ireland’s Construction Sector. This paper details the findings of a more concentrated investigation on a selection of jurisdictions on how particular international BIM programmes are orgainsed, managed and the level of governmental support …

Measuring Walls In Accordance With Arm4 - An Introductory Demonstration, Tony Cunningham 2017 Technological University Dublin

Measuring Walls In Accordance With Arm4 - An Introductory Demonstration, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

This demonstration involves the measurement of 'traditional' external brick and block cavity walls and internal block partitions. The demonstration is addressed to students taking (Irish) measurement or quantities modules at first year / entry level of quantity surveying related programmes. The worked example has been carried out using traditional handwritten quantity surveying processes on traditional dimension paper. It is acknowledged that this would be carried out using measurement software or on-screen measurement technology in actual practice. The traditional handwritten approach has been retained in order to enable novice students to develop the necessary measurement skills and build confidence through direct …

What Lessons Can Be Learned From The Delivery Of The First Building On The Grangegorman Campus Using Building Information Management (Bim)?, Pat O'Sullivan, Avril Behan 2017 Grangegorman Development Agency

What Lessons Can Be Learned From The Delivery Of The First Building On The Grangegorman Campus Using Building Information Management (Bim)?, Pat O'Sullivan, Avril Behan

Conference papers

There is an acceptance that BIM, via data management, can be integrated with FM to reduce costs during the Operations and Maintenance stage of a project. However, what has not been documented is the ‘on the ground’ reality which can be reviewed as a lessons learnt exercise to improve the implementation of BIM FM for future projects. This case study sets out to explore the realities of a client’s adoption of BIM based upon the actual experience of the Greenway Hub. Rather than relying on anecdotal evidence the research was based upon the real practices and experiences of the Dublin …

The Impact Of Building Form On Energy Consumption In New School Models Of Abu Dhabi, Meriem Rahmani 2017 United Arab Emirates University

The Impact Of Building Form On Energy Consumption In New School Models Of Abu Dhabi, Meriem Rahmani

Architectural Engineering Theses

The high rates of energy consumption by schools are mainly caused by inappropriate designs of architectural forms and limited access to free energy resources that can be provided by natural lighting and ventilation. Optimizing the architectural form with regards to its geometry, aspect ratio, spatial height to depth proportion, form direction, spacing between building masses can help to improve connection to the outdoor environment including daylight, air and outdoor greenery. The optimized form can help not only to save energy but also to create educational environments that are more lively and cheerful; and hence improve students’ performance, health and attitude. …

Verifying The Cause Of Panel Cracking - A Case Study, Jack Robinson, Stewart Hooks, John W. Lawson 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Verifying The Cause Of Panel Cracking - A Case Study, Jack Robinson, Stewart Hooks, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Despite the multitude of benefits tilt-up construction has to offer in low rise commercial buildings, there is still room for improvements in the performance of tilt-up buildings. One opportunity for improvement is to minimize a particular, undesirable cracking pattern often seen in concrete tilt-up panels (See Figure 1), which in some cases requires significant cosmetic patching (See Figure 2). This concrete cracking can first appear as non-problematic and non-structural, but even small cracks can become weathered and lead to water intrusion and rebar corrosion. At the very least, these cracks are cosmetic concerns for the owner or tenant potentially resulting …

The challenge to keep pace with the growing population and the ever-changing requirements for contemporary designs are felt in every sector of our public facilities. Regardless, we, the public …

Valuing Variations In Accordance With The Principle Irish Standard Forms Of Building Contract – Worked Examples And Solutions, Tony Cunningham 2017 Technological University Dublin

Valuing Variations In Accordance With The Principle Irish Standard Forms Of Building Contract – Worked Examples And Solutions, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

Given the nature of the construction process some change is almost inevitable. Standard forms of contract, therefore, cater for such change by including provisions which permit variations and alterations to the works. Variations may range from small inconsequential changes to major revisions which can delay and disrupt the completion to the project and place the project budget under considerable stress.

Establishing a realistic valuation for variations is not always a straightforward task. Even apparently simple changes can have significant unexpected consequences on project outcomes. This study examines how the valuation of variations may be carried out in accordance with the …

Dermal Uptake Of Benzophenone-3 From Clothing, Glenn C. Morrison, Gabriel Bekö, Charles J. Weschler, Tobias Schripp, Tunga Salthammer, Jonathan Hill, Anna Maria Andersson, Jørn Toftum, Geo Clausen, Hanne Frederiksen 2017 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Dermal Uptake Of Benzophenone-3 From Clothing, Glenn C. Morrison, Gabriel Bekö, Charles J. Weschler, Tobias Schripp, Tunga Salthammer, Jonathan Hill, Anna Maria Andersson, Jørn Toftum, Geo Clausen, Hanne Frederiksen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Benzophenone-3 (also known as BP-3 or oxybenzone) is added to sunscreens, plastics, and some coatings to filter UV radiation. The suspected endocrine disruptor BP-3 has been detected in the air and settled dust of homes and is expected to redistribute from its original sources to other indoor compartments, including clothing. Given its physical and chemical properties, we hypothesized that dermal uptake from clothing could contribute to the body burden of this compound. First, cotton shirts were exposed to air at an elevated concentration of BP-3 for 32 days; the final air concentration was 4.4 μg/m3. Next, three participants wore the …

The Automation Of Bim For Compliance Checking: A Visual Programming Approach, Jonathan Reinhardt, Malachy Mathews 2017 Technological University Dublin

The Automation Of Bim For Compliance Checking: A Visual Programming Approach, Jonathan Reinhardt, Malachy Mathews

Conference papers

A study by FIATECH confirmed that human interpretation causes inconsistencies in applying building compliance & regulations (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). Producing, updating and quality assuring such processes is inconsistent and unreliable (Preidel & Borrmann, 2016). A barrier to interpretation of building regulations is that software is designed by developers that are separate to local authorities (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). The current literature suggests Singapore, Norway, USA & Australia have all implemented BIM automation systems for building regulations. This study reviews current automation systems and based on this proposes a system of creating a checking system is efficient in the control …
