Investigation Of Modeling Strategies For Slender Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls, Jenna Marie Williams, Tracy Destiny Doan 2020 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Investigation Of Modeling Strategies For Slender Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls, Jenna Marie Williams, Tracy Destiny Doan

Architectural Engineering: Graduate Reports

A large number of pre-1980’s non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) structures in California utilizing RC shear walls to resist seismic lateral forces have been identified as deficient by industry practitioners. These non-ductile wall systems are typically lightly reinforced and lack adequate boundary element detailing. Analytical studies suggest these walls are susceptible to brittle, compression-controlled failure modes due to damage from concrete crushing and bar buckling. Furthermore, poor behavior of lightly reinforced concrete walls was observed in many recent earthquakes, for example in Chile (1985), New Zealand (2010/2011) and Mexico (2017). This has generated concern among engineers in high seismic regions around …

A Comparison Between Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage And Half-Cell Potential Methods In Detection Of Corrosion In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Ahmad Shoaib Amiri 2020 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Comparison Between Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage And Half-Cell Potential Methods In Detection Of Corrosion In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Ahmad Shoaib Amiri

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars (rebar) in reinforced concrete decks can lead to serious structural issues in bridges. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods provide small wavelengths that can be used for early detection of several types of deterioration. The recently-developed Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage (UGWL) Method utilizes steel as the waveguide and measures the energy leaked into the surrounding concrete. Previous studies completed at University of Nebraska-Lincoln demonstrated that the measurements of the leaked energy using receivers from the concrete surface can successfully identify early stages of various flaws such as corrosion, delamination, and cracking. In this method, the longitudinal waves …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigates the concern about biofilm growth on random packing material (RPM) used to enhance the hydraulic disinfection efficiency of a chlorine contactor. The inflow, outflow, and RPM were monitored for heterotrophic bacteria (via heterotrophic plate counts) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as indicators of bacteriological water quality and the presence of biofilm. The results of this study show that there was no substantial biofilm growth in a lab-scale chlorine contactor and no substantial increase in bacterial counts for the bulk outflow over a 10-week period. Thus, the potential for excessive biofilm growth should not be considered a barrier concerning the …

The Advantages Of Integrated Project Delivery (Ipd) Utilization In The Construction Industry Compared To Traditional Project Delivery Methods, Mert Oytun

International Programs

Today, primarily due to the development of information technologies, the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has the opportunity to realize its shortcomings more effortlessly. Typically, the most considerable difficulties are encountered in the performance measurements of projects in the AEC industry. The reason is that the AEC industry is highly fragmented, even though it involves various stakeholders that should be in uninterrupted communication throughout all phases of a project. This fragmented structure mainly causes (1)endless debates among the stakeholders, (2) schedule delays, and (3) profit losses. Hence, addressing projects’ productivity change regarding the utilization of different project delivery methods …

Understanding The Impact Of Room Acoustic Conditions On The Kurtosis Levels Of Various Noise Signals, William Spallino 2020 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Understanding The Impact Of Room Acoustic Conditions On The Kurtosis Levels Of Various Noise Signals, William Spallino

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Impulsive noise can be common in certain occupational and recreational settings, such as manufacturing plants, construction sites, and firing ranges. While many regulations and guidelines for noise exposure exist, their mathematical basis is stronger for continuous noise, and concerns have been raised about the possibility that impulsive noise may be more harmful to people’s hearing than those metrics would let on. Much work has been done on establishing metrics that accurately assess the severity and hearing risk associated with impulsive noise, but the effects of room acoustic conditions on those metrics have been heretofore understudied.

This study calculated room impulse …

Implementing Bluebeam Software In Architectural Engineering Design Courses, Michael James Deigert, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Pamalee A. Brady

Architectural Engineering

A critical aspect of structural engineering education is helping students develop effective electronic graphical communication skills to convey their design solutions. Many undergraduate civil and architectural engineering programs address this at the document creation stage by teaching Autodesk AutoCAD or Revit to create 2-D or 3-D structural design files. However, students tend to have limited exposure to commercial software for document management and markup that allows for coordination between the engineer, architect, and contractor teams. Bluebeam Revu is one such software that has emerged as an industry standard for annotation and markup of engineering design documents.

Previous educational studies on …

Analysis Of Burning Wood In The Transient State And The Application To Structural Design, Roberta Veliz, Kimberly Guzman 2020 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Analysis Of Burning Wood In The Transient State And The Application To Structural Design, Roberta Veliz, Kimberly Guzman

Architectural Engineering

Determining the extent of the contribution of exposed timber on compartment fire dynamics in open floor plans is a complex process. Designers traditionally used compartmentalization design methods which create spaces where flashover is likely, given the fuel load and ventilation conditions. However, due to the large geometric dimensions and spread of fuel, fires in open floor plans are more likely to remain as localized or traveling fires. As such, an understanding of not only ignition potential but also flame spread is critical to characterizing the contribution of exposed timber. An integral step in characterizing the potential contribution is through an …
