Silver Screen Reversals Of The Domino Theory: American Cold War Movies And The Re-Imagination Of British Experiences In Southeast Asia, Wen-Qing (Wei Wenqing) Ngoei
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This essay examines how Hollywood was affected by the successful anticommunism of Britain and its local allies in Malaya and Singapore, victories that unfolded alongside Vietnam’s mounting crisis in the early 1960s. It shows that American movies of this era which portrayed the intertwining of US and British experiences in 1950s Malaya and 1940s Singapore conveyed an uneasy yet clear optimism about U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia.
Windows Of The World: Postmodern Urbanism In Los Angeles And Shenzhen, 2024 Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut
Windows Of The World: Postmodern Urbanism In Los Angeles And Shenzhen, Calvin Horning
Senior Theses and Projects
This work draws upon the ideas of Edward Soja and other spatial theorists to compare the postmodern urban development of Los Angeles and Shenzhen, China. Both cities have undergone rapid growth and become major urban metropolises, offering potential paradigmatic forms for contemporary urban studies. The thesis is based on the ideas of the LA School of Urbanism, of which Soja was a part, and reviews the school’s collective case for Los Angeles as a paradigmatic city for the postmodern age. This work then compares this account of Los Angeles with Shenzhen, a city that has risen from nothing to one …

Predicting The Future Of Myanmar’S Civil War: Can Half A Century Of Military Rule Be Defeated?, Nathan Ritterling
Honors Theses
In 2021, the military of Myanmar launched a coup in response to their overwhelming defeat in the 2020 elections, resulting in an end to the country’s tentative move towards democracy and in intense violence to suppress opposition to the coup. Anti-junta forces quickly formed in the aftermath to directly oppose the military and return the country to democratic rule, and began collaborating with long-standing ethnic militias in their efforts. This has led to a state of prolonged civil war, as the two sides fight for dominance over the nature of Myanmar’s future government. This paper investigated the potential outcome of …

Allocating Vehicle Registration Permits, Massimiliano Landi, Domenico Menicucci
Research Collection School Of Economics
We compare social welfare, consumer surplus and profits in two different institutional settings in which an item whose quantity is fixed and controlled (vehicle registration permit) is allocated to the buyers of a complementary good (car). In the first setting, which resembles the way in which vehicle registration permits are allocated in Singapore, the central planner runs a uniform price auction for permits in which the consumers who bid the highest receive the permits and pay the highest losing bid. Then each winning consumer purchases a car from a seller. In the alternative setting, the central planner first allocates the …
Houses Built For Gods: Articulations Of Urban Hokora In Kyoto, 2024 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
Houses Built For Gods: Articulations Of Urban Hokora In Kyoto, Steele Engelmann
Anthropology Undergraduate Honors Theses
Amidst the urban landscape of Kyoto, Japan, there are thousands of hokora, small neighborhood shrines. This study uses social theories of pilgrimage and space to examine the articulation of hokora, community, and personal desire. As sites of local pilgrimage, hokora form networks of communal, but also individual, aspirations across the urban spiritual landscape of the city. This thesis argues that communities are connected to the larger social structures of Kyoto through hokora. As such, neighborhoods are reproduced and displayed through their hokora’s entanglements with the urban, social, and religious landscapes of Kyoto. Therefore, this study deploys an ethnographic approach to …

Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
China’s rapid expansion is a growing concern to many in the West, yet the history and pattern of its meteoric rise is deeply misunderstood. Surprisingly, its rise may be similar to that of many Western states. This paper will examine a constellation of China’s territorial and cultural expansions. Furthermore, it will examine ongoing and future expansions of the Chinese empire. It will examine Chinese actions in Tibet, the Yunnan Province, the Guizhou Province, Taiwan, the Belt and Road Initiative, and examine China’s ongoing treatment of Uyghur Muslims. These subjects will also be qualitatively compared to settler colonial theories, as described …

The Importance Of Dialogue Between The United States And North Korea: How Can The United States Respond To The Nuclear Issue With North Korea?, Unbi Choi
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
The nuclear issue with North Korea could create even more danger in currently tense international relations. In reality, a long-standing economic sanction is a factor in North Korea's continued hostile attitude toward the United States. The Trump administration chose negotiation instead of economic sanctions. Negotiations succeeded in temporarily easing tensions between the United States and North Korea. However, the Biden administration put economic sanctions back on North Korea. Since then, North Korea has increasingly cultivated hostility, even more than in the last few years, and is further developing nuclearization. As this example indicates, economic sanctions would have negative consequences. The …

Unmasking The Holder Of The Purse Strings: Countering Chinese Economic Coercion In The Indo-Pacific, Rachel L. Davis
Senior Honors Theses
The Indo-Pacific is a key focal point of U.S.-China competition due to its geographical, economic, and military significance. China is using political warfare to achieve its strategic goals in the region, influencing other nations to align with its interests. Economic coercion is a key tool of this warfare. This is evident in the Pacific Islands, among America’s treaty allies, in Southeast Asia, and in South Asia. To prove itself the superior partner, maintain access to key points of land, and keep the Indo-Pacific open for trade, the U.S. must counter China’s activities. This can be achieved via a stronger economic …

Freedom Of Contract And M&A Termination Fees: Peculiar Case Of South Korea Vs. United States, Joseph Cho
University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review
This manuscript offers a comprehensive survey of the liquidated damages regimes in the Republic of Korea and the United States, specifically within the framework of corporate mergers and acquisitions. In the Republic of Korea, liquidated damages play a crucial role in pre-estimating potential damages arising from contract breaches, offering numerous benefits such as reducing the creditor’s evidentiary burden and fostering contractual compliance. Notably, the Korean Civil Code provides checks against excessive predetermined damages. In contrast, the U.S. perspective is enriched by a series of case laws, emphasizing the compensatory intent of liquidated damages. A comparative analysis reveals intriguing intersections between …

Regulating The Unregulated: The Beginning Of The End Of A Laissez-Faire Era Of The Crypto "Wild West", Bo Hyun Kim
University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review
The crypto market has been left largely unregulated on a global scale for over a decade. 1 Recently, multiple jurisdictions are aligning efforts to tame the increasingly volatile crypto “Wild West” as evidenced by the influx of forthcoming legislations, consultations between operators and regulators, and regulatory crackdowns. 2 A cross-comparative analysis of the regulatory framework in the United States, the European Union, and Korea indicates that the proposed scopes of legislations cover an expansive breadth of assets. However, there are further needs for supplementary regulations following the enactment of the newly proposed regulations to close certain critical gaps that remain …

An Absent "No" Is Not A "Yes": A Legal Analysis Of Consent In Japan's Amended Penal Code And International Rape Legislation Standards, Larissa Truchan
University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review
On June 16, 2023, the Japanese government passed a law to partially amend the Penal Code that explicitly outlines eight scenarios prosecutable as the crime of rape that make “it difficult for the victim to form, express, or fulfill the intention not to consent.” This article will reveal that the June 2023 amendment does not criminalize all “non-consensual sexual intercourse,” as its text suggests, but is premised on defining coercive circumstances that may interfere with a victim’s presumed duty to demonstrate their “intention not to consent.” As a result, Japanese courts will continue to possess the subjective power to determine …

This essay explores the devastating impacts that global warming currently has on women living in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest globally, located in South Asia. Womanist ideas are employed to identify the underlying injustices within environmental policies like the Paris Agreement, which undermine the effects of climate change in the global south. Initiatives led by women in vulnerable regions are then shared to offer ideas for improvement.

Homeopathy is a form of medicine that is incredibly controversial and is often labeled as a fraudulent, placebo effect drug, that can have potentially dangerous side effects. This is the picture that is painted of homeopathy in the United States and many other countries in which these medicines are banned in distribution or highly unregulated. In contrast, India has popularized and well-integrated homeopathy into their medical systems with government backing and consistent funding towards accredited homeopathic institutions and funding hospital systems. This paper will explore the circumstances and health care dynamics of India that allowed homeopathy to gain the level …
