The University of Maine Center on Aging, in partnership with the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research and Education, was one of three grantees taking part in a U.S. Administration on Aging-funded project to develop a national osteoporosis awareness and action plan targeting postmenopausal women
The University of Maine Center on Aging’s portion of the research entailed several phases of activity. The University of Maine Center on Aging was founded in 2002; this report highlights and discusses the ongoing work of the Center on Aging in that time period. The programs discussed include the Resident Senior Volunteer Corps, Music Uniting Students and Elders, and The Whole Woman program to raise awareness about osteoporosis. Cytotoxic T Cell Response To Influenza Vaccination In Older Adults, Caroline R. Letter

Influenza infections result in activation of cellular and humoral immune responses, leading to stimulation of cytotoxic T cells (CTL) and helper T cells with subsequent viral clearance.
By using an assay of granzyme B activity, the in vivo cellular-mediated immune response of old adults was found to be significantly decreased in comparison to young adults. The effect of aging on the CTL response was further investigated via enzyme-linked immunospot technique. A significant increase in number of virus-specific T cells occurred in older adults after vaccination, although the magnitude of the CTL response decreased in comparison to young adults. These data …
