The Nc-Proximal Average For Multiple Functions, Chayne Planiden, Warren L. Hare
The Nc-Proximal Average For Multiple Functions, Chayne Planiden, Warren L. Hare
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
The NC-proximal average is a parametrized function used to continuously transform one proper, lsc, prox-bounded function into another. Until now it has been defined for two functions. The purpose of this article is to redefine it so that any finite number of functions may be used. The layout generally follows that of [Hare 2009], extending those results to the more general case and in some instances giving alternate proofs by using techniques developed after the publication of that paper. We conclude with an example examining the discontinuity of the minimizers of the NC-proximal average.

How To Create A Highly Distinctive Trademark: Orienting Patrons To Trademark Policy In Fifteen Minutes, Robert Berry
How To Create A Highly Distinctive Trademark: Orienting Patrons To Trademark Policy In Fifteen Minutes, Robert Berry
Librarian Publications
One of the challenges of assisting PTRC trademark patrons is to provide them with a brief overview of trademark policy that is both practical and engaging. One approach is to set aside 15 minutes to prioritize some of the most central aspects of trademark policy and to explain that, by understanding a few basic principles, they will find it much easier to design distinctive marks.
Patents As Business Intelligence Tools, Amy Jansen
Patents As Business Intelligence Tools, Amy Jansen
Librarian Publications
As most entrepreneurs and business owners can tell you, one of the most significant considerations that companies face is how to protect their work. Managing intellectual property is now integrated with overall business models and corporate strategy. For this reason, patents have become crucial strategic pieces in business and competitive intelligence in the twenty-first century. Having the right patents, and even more importantly, knowing how to use them can either bolster or harm a company. As technology and rapid advancements in innovation become the cornerstone of corporate success, companies’ research and development (R & D) and patent spending have become …
Mobile Cloud Learning For Higher Education: A Case Study Of Moodle In The Cloud, Minjuan Wang, Yong Chen, Muhammad Jahanzaib Khan
Mobile Cloud Learning For Higher Education: A Case Study Of Moodle In The Cloud, Minjuan Wang, Yong Chen, Muhammad Jahanzaib Khan
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Mobile cloud learning, a combination of mobile learning and cloud computing, is a relatively new concept that holds considerable promise for future development and delivery in the education sectors. Cloud computing helps mobile learning overcome obstacles related to mobile computing. The main focus of this paper is to explore how cloud computing changes traditional mobile learning. A case study of the usage of Moodle in the cloud via mobile learning in Khalifa University was conducted.

The objective of this study is to understand the types of health information (health topics) that users search online for Cardiovascular Diseases, by performing categorization of health search queries (from Mayoclinic.com) using UMLS MetaMap based on UMLS concepts and semantic types.

Alignment And Dataset Identification Of Linked Data In Semantic Web, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community over the past few years. With rapid expansion in size and diversity, it consists of over 800 interlinked datasets with over 60 billion triples. These datasets encapsulate structured data and knowledge spanning over varied domains such as entertainment, life sciences, publications, geography, and government. Applications can take advantage of this by using the knowledge distributed over the interconnected datasets, which is not realistic to find in a single place elsewhere. However, two of the key obstacles in using the LOD cloud are the limited support …
Lost Classics Of Intellectual Property Law, Michael J. Madison
Lost Classics Of Intellectual Property Law, Michael J. Madison
Articles
Santayana wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” American legal scholarship often suffers from a related sin of omission: failing to acknowledge its intellectual debts. This short piece attempts to cure one possible source of the problem, in one discipline: inadequate information about what’s worth reading among older writing. I list “lost classics” of American scholarship in intellectual property law. These are not truly “lost,” and what counts as “classic” is often in the eye of the beholder (or reader). But these works may usefully be found again, and intellectual property law scholarship would be …
Layers Of Law: The Case Of E-Cigarettes, Eric A. Feldman
Layers Of Law: The Case Of E-Cigarettes, Eric A. Feldman
All Faculty Scholarship
This paper, written for a symposium on "Layers of Law and Social Order," connects the current debate over the regulation of electronic cigarettes with socio-legal scholarship on law, norms, and social control. Although almost every aspect of modern life that is subject to regulation can be seen through the framework ‘layers of law,’ e-cigarettes are distinguished by the rapid emergence of an unusually dense legal and regulatory web. In part, the dense fabric of e-cigarette law and regulation, both within and beyond the US, results from the lack of robust scientific and epidemiological data on the behavioral and health consequences …
Conceptualizing Longitudinal Mixed Methods Designs: A Methodological Review Of Health Sciences Research, Vicki Plano-Clark, Nancy Anderson, Jessica A. Wertz, Yuchun Zhou, Karen Schumacher, Christine Miaskowski
Conceptualizing Longitudinal Mixed Methods Designs: A Methodological Review Of Health Sciences Research, Vicki Plano-Clark, Nancy Anderson, Jessica A. Wertz, Yuchun Zhou, Karen Schumacher, Christine Miaskowski
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Longitudinal research is well suited for investigating phenomena that change over time. With the growing acceptance of mixed methods, researchers are combining qualitative and quantitative approaches within longitudinal research. However, little attention has been paid to how researchers integrate longitudinal mixed methods databases. The purpose of this methodological review was to describe how researchers combine mixed methods and longitudinal approaches in practice and delineate dimensions and issues inherent within these complex designs. We examined published empirical studies from the health sciences that self-identified as longitudinal and mixed methods. Our results identify major dimensions, variations, and issues for designing longitudinal mixed …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Parasites are agents of disease in humans, livestock, crops, and wildlife and are powerful representations of the ecological and historical context of the diseases they cause. Recognizing a nexus of professional opportunities and global public need, we gathered at the Cedar Point Biological Station of the University of Nebraska in September 2012 to formulate a cooperative and broad platform for providing essential information about the evolution, ecology, and epidemiology of parasites across host groups, parasite groups, geographical regions, and ecosystem types. A general protocol, documentation–assessment–monitoring–action (DAMA), suggests an integrated proposal to build a proactive capacity to understand, anticipate, and respond …
