Model For Acid-Mediated Tumour Invasion With Chemotherapy Intervention I: Spatially Homogeneous Populations, Andrew Brett Holder, Marianito R. Rodrigo Jan 2014

Model For Acid-Mediated Tumour Invasion With Chemotherapy Intervention I: Spatially Homogeneous Populations, Andrew Brett Holder, Marianito R. Rodrigo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The acid-mediation hypothesis, that is, the hypothesis that acid produced by tumours, as a result of aerobic glycolysis, provides a mechanism for invasion, has so far been considered as a relatively closed system. The focus has mainly been on the dynamics of the tumour, normal-tissue, acid and possibly some other bodily components, without considering the effect of an external intervention such as a cytotoxic treatment. This article aims to examine the effect that a cytotoxic treatment has on a tumour growing under the acid-mediation hypothesis by using a simple set of ordinary differential equations that consider the interaction between normal-tissue, …

Rectangular Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns: Stub Column Tests, G Cavill, Tao Yu Jan 2014

Rectangular Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns: Stub Column Tests, G Cavill, Tao Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns. The most common sectional form of hybrid DSTCs consists of a layer of concrete sandwiched between a circular inner steel tube and a circular outer FRP tube whose fibre directions are close to the hoop detection in order to provide effective confinement to the concrete. Much recent research has been conducted on circular hybrid DSTCs, which has demonstrated that the combination of the three constituent materials leads to several advantages not available with existing forms of columns. Rectangular (including square) hybrid DSTCs may be needed for practical …

A Review Of Offshore Wind Turbine Nacelle: Technical Challenges, And Research And Developmental Trends, Md Rabiul Islam, Youguang Guo, Jianguo Zhu Jan 2014

A Review Of Offshore Wind Turbine Nacelle: Technical Challenges, And Research And Developmental Trends, Md Rabiul Islam, Youguang Guo, Jianguo Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The turbine nacelle with traditional wind power generation system is heavy, especially in offshore applications due to the large mass of the power frequency step-up-transformer operated at 50 or 60 Hz, and copper conductor generator. For example, the weight and volume of a 0.69/33 kV 2.6 MVA transformer are typically in the range of 6-8 t and 5-9 m3, respectively. The weight for a 10 MW direct drive permanent magnet generator is about 300 t. These penalties significantly increase the tower construction, and turbine installation and maintenance costs. The tower cost represents 26% of the total component cost of the …

An Amorphous Alloy Core Medium Frequency Magnetic-Link For Medium Voltage Photovoltaic Inverters, Md Rabiul Islam, Youguang Guo, Zhi Wei Lin, Jianguo Zhu Jan 2014

An Amorphous Alloy Core Medium Frequency Magnetic-Link For Medium Voltage Photovoltaic Inverters, Md Rabiul Islam, Youguang Guo, Zhi Wei Lin, Jianguo Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The advanced magnetic materials with high saturation flux density and low specific core loss have led to the development of an efficient, compact, and lightweight multiple-input multiple-output medium frequency magnetic-link. It offers a new route to eliminate some critical limitations of recently proposed medium voltage photovoltaic inverters. In this paper, a medium frequency magnetic-link is developed with Metglas amorphous alloy 2605S3A. The common magnetic-link generates isolated and balanced multiple DC supplies for all of the H-bridge inverter cells of the medium voltage inverter. The design and implementation of the prototype, test platform, and the experimental test results are analyzed and …

The Nc-Proximal Average For Multiple Functions, Chayne Planiden, Warren L. Hare Jan 2014

The Nc-Proximal Average For Multiple Functions, Chayne Planiden, Warren L. Hare

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The NC-proximal average is a parametrized function used to continuously transform one proper, lsc, prox-bounded function into another. Until now it has been defined for two functions. The purpose of this article is to redefine it so that any finite number of functions may be used. The layout generally follows that of [Hare 2009], extending those results to the more general case and in some instances giving alternate proofs by using techniques developed after the publication of that paper. We conclude with an example examining the discontinuity of the minimizers of the NC-proximal average.
