Use And Cost Analysis Of E-Books: Patron-Driven Acquisitions Plan Vs. Librarian-Selected Titles, Suzanne M. Ward, Rebecca A. Richardson
Use And Cost Analysis Of E-Books: Patron-Driven Acquisitions Plan Vs. Librarian-Selected Titles, Suzanne M. Ward, Rebecca A. Richardson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Many academic libraries have experimented with e-book patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) plans as small projects to test the concept of offering users thousands of titles, yet only paying for them as they are used. At the same time, many librarians continue traditional patterns of buying e-book titles the same way they bought print books for decades – purchasing titles based on their belief that these selections will be ones that local users need. This study shows that many librarian-selected e-book titles suffer the same fate as the traditional model of librarian-selected print books: many receive little or no use. The PDA …

Three Years Of Unmediated Document Delivery: An Analysis And Consideration Of Collection Development Priorities, Emily Chan, Christina Mune, Yiping Wang, Susan Kendall
Faculty and Staff Publications
Like most academic libraries, San José State University Library is struggling to meet users’ rising expectations for immediate information within the financial confines of a flat budget. To address acquisition of nonsubscribed article content, particularly outside of business hours, San José State University Library implemented Copyright Clearance Center’s Get It Now, a document delivery service. Three academic years of analyzed data, which involves more than 10,000 requests, and the subsequent collection development actions taken by the library will be discussed. The value and challenges of patron-driven, unmediated document delivery services in conjunction with traditional document delivery services will be considered.
Content Analysis Of Two Libraries Resources For Supporting Primary Economics Instruction, Lindsey J. Hilts
Content Analysis Of Two Libraries Resources For Supporting Primary Economics Instruction, Lindsey J. Hilts
Graduate Research Papers
The teaching of some primary teachers is being compromised in schools with a lack of rich science and social studies library collections that have been intentionally developed by a professional teacher librarian in collaboration with teachers. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare school library resources for the same economics unit taught in two different elementary schools’ primary classrooms, including the quality of resources available and their usefulness in teaching social studies economics standards. School B had a higher quantity of resources meeting the standards as well as more texts determined to be of high quality. The …
Food For Thought: Should Libraries Partner With Nonlibrary Search Engine Providers For Their Opacs And Discovery Layers?, Michelle Wu
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Since the development of integrated library systems (ILS) in the 1970s, the focus of developers and librarians has been on the “integrated” aspect, but with the advances in technology, the time has come for libraries to consider whether a disaggregated system would better benefit their users. This article seeks to make the argument that the design of a user-friendly public interface to library systems is ideal for partnerships with the broader search engine industry; such an approach would enable participants to harness their respective strengths while simultaneously limiting the effect of their deficiencies
The Persistence Of Open Access Electronic Journals, Elizabeth A. Lightfoot
The Persistence Of Open Access Electronic Journals, Elizabeth A. Lightfoot
Works of the FIU Libraries
Purpose – Open access (OA) electronic journals have been identified as potentially at risk of loss without more coordinated preservation efforts. The purpose of this paper is to test the current availability of OA electronic journals indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
Design/methodology/approach – Using publicly available journal metadata downloaded from DOAJ, individual journal URLs were tested for validity and accessibility using a Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications macro.
Findings – Initial results showed 69.51% of the URLs tested returned a successful HTTP status code. The remainder of the URLs returned codes that indicated redirection or …
