C. William Pollard Papers
This speech was delivered at the 1997 fall seminar of the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In it Pollard addresses what he calls the "confusion" and "insecurity" felt by many Americans at the turn of the century. To remedy this situation the corporate leader must adopt a servant attitude, one that helps her prioritize the well-being of the people who make up any given institution.

Soulful Leadership, Arlene W. Mitchell
Soulful Leadership, Arlene W. Mitchell
Theses and Graduate Projects
Soul is an old idea that has now become lost to our secular workplace. It does not have to be this way. By taking a spiritual rather than religious approach to soulfulness, we can find a place for it in our daily lives, including in the workplace. The goal of soulful leadership is to create a workplace that enables and supports each of us in our quest to grow into our calling and the depth of our potential. Soul is about creativity, adaptability, commitment, connection, energy, and passion-exactly what our workplaces are now asking of us. To become soulful leaders, …
Case Study Of Ethical Leadership And Abraham Lincoln, Jarrod Englebretson
Case Study Of Ethical Leadership And Abraham Lincoln, Jarrod Englebretson
Theses and Graduate Projects
This paper consists of a case study examining the question of Abraham Lincoln and ethical leadership. The definition used in the case study for ethical leadership was a combination of the research of two men, George Shapiro and Peter Kostenbaum. This definition for ethical leadership was then used while looking at certain events, speeches, and writings of Abraham Lincoln both before and during his presidency. The conclusion derived from this analysis is that Abraham Lincoln was an ethical leader and that his leadership should be used as an example of an ethical leader.

The purpose of the forthcoming study is to gain an understanding of how empowerment is utilized in the political arena. The project will primarily deal with Congress and the relations between Members. With all of the facets of the legislative branch, it is necessary to narrow this study to several aspects of the body. Due to the diversity of Congressional Members and the formal structure of House and Senate committees, this investigation will serve to provide a concentrated, yet thorough analysis of the presence of empowerment.

"With The Greatest Respect And Fidelity:" A Cherokee Vision Of The "Trust" Doctrine, David E. Wilkins
"With The Greatest Respect And Fidelity:" A Cherokee Vision Of The "Trust" Doctrine, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The trust relationship is the conceptual/philosophical framework against which all relations between the federal government and indigenous groups are conducted. Yet despite the centrality of this concept, federal policymakers have no consistent or agreed upon definition of what the trust relationship actually entails. And, more importantly, indigenous conceptions of trust have rarely been assessed. This article analyzes and advances one tribe's—the Cherokee—perspective on trust. In focusing on how the Cherokee perceive trust, this section emphasizes that from an indigenous viewpoint the trust relationship embodies a complex and sophisticated understanding that both the tribe and the United States have reciprocal responsibilities …
Convoluted Essence: Indian Rights And The Federal Trust Doctrine, David E. Wilkins
Convoluted Essence: Indian Rights And The Federal Trust Doctrine, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
In recent years there has been growing resentment from what one might term, for lack of a better phrase, the "anti-trust" segment. These commentators have offered a host of arguments to support their position: the trust doctrine has been and is still used primarily to "give moral color to depredations of tribes;" it is "an assertion of unrestrained political power over Indians, power that may be exercised without Indian consent and without substantial legal restraint;" and it is really a "metaphor for federal control of Indian affairs without signifying any enforceable rights of the tribal `beneficiaries.'" Yet others suggest that …
[Introduction To] American Indian Sovereignty And The U.S. Supreme Court: The Masking Of Justice, David E. Wilkins
[Introduction To] American Indian Sovereignty And The U.S. Supreme Court: The Masking Of Justice, David E. Wilkins
Bookshelf
"Like the miner's canary, the Indian marks the shift from fresh air to poison gas in our political atmosphere and our treatment of Indians, even more than our treatment of other minorities, reflects the rise and fall in our democratic faith, wrote Felix S. Cohen, an early expert in Indian legal affairs.
In this book, David Wilkins charts the "fall in our democratic faith" through fifteen landmark cases in which the Supreme Court significantly curtailed Indian rights. He offers compelling evidence that Supreme Court justices selectively used precedents and facts, both historical and contemporary, to arrive at decisions that have …
Leadership And Listening: Perceptions And Behaviors, Scott D. Johnson, Curt Bechler
Leadership And Listening: Perceptions And Behaviors, Scott D. Johnson, Curt Bechler
Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Recently, however, Bechler & Johnson (1995) made an initial attempt to identify a relationship between perceptions of leadership and perceptions of listening skill. Their study found a significant positive correlations between member perceptions of who was leading the group and member perceptions of which members were the best listeners. “Those subjects ranked as most like a leader were also typically ranked as good listeners…Individuals perceived to be leading the groups were most commonly believed to be listening to the groups” (Bechler & Johnson, 1995, pp.82-83). This essay extends that study, reexamining the relationship between perceptions of leadership and listening and …

Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler
Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler
Honors Theses
In many areas of the United States, people complain about the leaders in their communities. Historically, when people think of 'leaders' in their communities, the majority of them are predominantly white, male and affluent. The American citizen believes that a portion of these leaders are shrouded in scandal, corruption, mistrust, exclusiveness, and power. The American citizen finds difficulty when trying to enter into the elite group of decision makers. Citizens and organizations accuse these leaders of making decisions that do not reflect the best interest of society, but rather benefit themselves. As a result, Americans call out for better leadership …

The Study Of Leadership In Chesapeake Bay Watershed Associations : A Case Study In Citizen Leadership, Joanne Demoss

There are many watershed associations such as the James River Association or the Chicahominy Watershed Alliance throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, but it is unclear how these organizations function and what makes one more effective than another. I have evaluated these organizations through surveys and interviews in an attempt to develop a guideline of leadership best practices of these various organizations.
