Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder May 1973

Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder

Dissertations and Theses

Most research on the urban sonic environment has been recent. One finding has been that physical noise exposure indices calibrate poorly with human noise response. The vagaries of human response to noise have given impetus to research to isolate the factors that differentiate human response to noise. The present thesis continues this research.

The thesis specifies human noise response to occur on three levels: awareness, annoyance, and complaint. The factors that structure each level of noise response are identified in the published Iiterature.

Noise awareness is a function of noise exposure. Noise annoyance is a function of noise exposure to …

Logging In The Upper Cumberland River Valley: A Folk Industry, Steven Schulman May 1973

Logging In The Upper Cumberland River Valley: A Folk Industry, Steven Schulman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry. It is impossible to separate the logging industry of the Cumberland from the general folk life of the area, because of the involvement of the people in …

A Comparison Of Selected Habitats Of Fallow Deer (Dama Dama) In The United States, William Fowler Oct 1972

A Comparison Of Selected Habitats Of Fallow Deer (Dama Dama) In The United States, William Fowler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many of the facets of fallow deer introduction to the United States have previously received considerable attention. Significant factors concerning naturalization have been studied in part, but no previous attempt has been made to investigate the range of this animal nor to compare the various habitats into which it has been introduced with its native land. This study was undertaken for that purpose. An attempt was made to investigate naturalization on the basis of herd growth in a given environment. Climate, vegetation and topography for certain study sites were compared with the same features in the native range. The results …

Biogeography Field Guide To Cascade Mountains : Transect Along U.S. Highway 26 In Oregon, Larry W. Price Mar 1971

Biogeography Field Guide To Cascade Mountains : Transect Along U.S. Highway 26 In Oregon, Larry W. Price

Occasional Papers in Geography

Occasional Papers in Geography Publication No. 1

This guide is an outgrowth of field trips I have made with students in biogeography classes at Portland State University. When I first began these field trips I was surprised that such a guide was not available. It seemed such a natural thing to have, given the spectacular laboratory of the Cascades where is displayed one of the most dramatic sequences of contrasting environments on earth. Within less than 100 miles you pass from a cloudy marine climate to a semi-arid continental climate, from a lush green land with towering trees to desert …

New Town: We Can Learn From This British Venture, Chester Smolski Mar 1970

New Town: We Can Learn From This British Venture, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"In 1946 when Lewis Silkin, Minister of Housing, approached Stevenage, then a quiet village of about 6,000 residents 30 miles north of London in the lovely rolling Hertfordshire countryside, he must have suspected that the villagers were not particularly anxious to hear him speak. The sign in the railway station had been changed to Silkingrad by some of the disgruntled villagers and before he was to leave he found the tires of his car deflated and some sand in the petrol tank. Stevenage was the first "new town" designated under the New Towns Act of 1946 and the Minister was …

A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner Jan 1970

A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In order to plan the future development of the Canadian Shield within a conceptual framework as suggested by the Mid-Canada Corridor concept, both the presently developed and potential, natural resources of this area need to be evaluated for knowledgeable development and management. To this purpose, various areas of nickel sulphide deposits within the area of the Canadian Shield have been studied with the object of determining similar sequences of intrusive events and their spatial relationships.

Within the Sudbury area, Ontario, five periods of intrusive activity have been recognized, each period characterized by an initial intrusion of acidic composition, followed in …

Social And Economic Consequences Of The Dickey-Lincoln School Hydro-Electric Power Development On The Upper St. John Valley, Maine -- : Phase 1, Preconstruction, Louis A. Ploch, Nelson L. Leray

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The intention of this report is to present a still picture of the selected area as of the summer of 1966. The emphasis is on empirical relationships. The data contained herein will provide a base for subsequent analysis. Thus little attempt is made to cast the findings of the study in a theoretical framework. Later publications will utilize relevant theory and research to analyze the social and economic changes in an area related to the building of the Dickey and Lincoln School Dams. It is presumed that this particular report and its statistical sup-plement will be of particular interest to …

An Outline For Physical Geography In The Secondary School, David S. Mellander Jul 1966

An Outline For Physical Geography In The Secondary School, David S. Mellander

Masters Theses

The Need and The Purpose

Introduction

As the earth has become more densely populated, an understanding of the space relationships between man and his environment has become essential. In particular, man needs to understand the complex interrelationship between places, and the distinctive character of places.

Major functions of geographic instruction are to guide students into discovering the distribution of physical conditions, and the interrelationships which characterize such places, as well as those between man and his environment. No other discipline attempts to discover the wholeness, order and reason in the complex totality of the landscape.

Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis Jan 1965

Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Sawmilling in Minnesota started about the time of settlement and, until 1870, mainly consisted of small mills located in the southern half of the state. Mills along the Mississippi River were mainly in urban centers while the remainder were scattered and associated with the clearing of the land and the meeting of the needs of local communities. After 1870, mills become larger. Many were constructed in northern Minnesota. All used forests in the northern port of the state and reduced them so greatly that, by 1920, the mills closed and were replaced by portable sawmills.

Measurement Of Vegetation And Terrain Characteristics On Small Scale Vertical Aerial Photographs, Merle P. Meyer Jan 1964

Measurement Of Vegetation And Terrain Characteristics On Small Scale Vertical Aerial Photographs, Merle P. Meyer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Few events in recent years have stirred public imagination and interest to the degree occasioned by the uses made of aerial photographs in the Cuban affair. The average earth scientist, however, was not taken by surprise since the basic methods, materials and principles involved were not new to him. As a matter of fact, since World War II, aerial photography has become an everyday, virtually indispensable tool to most earth feature and natural resource analysts. In order better to understand the application of aerial photographs to such civil pursuits, it would be well at this point to differentiate the two …

Navigation On The San Joaquin River, 1848-1925, John Wynn Birtwhistle Jan 1962

Navigation On The San Joaquin River, 1848-1925, John Wynn Birtwhistle

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a history of the navigation on the San Joaquin River from 1848 until 1925. The main purpose of the thesis will be to examine chronologically any and all events and factors concerned with the navigation of the river during that period of time. The first chapter will survey the geographical and historical background of the San Joaquin River.

The emphasis will be placed on the river's use for navigation. Since the upper, southern third of the San Joaquin Valley does not drain into the San Joaquin River, only those areas between the Kings River on the south …

The Effect Of Physiography On The Trade Routes Of East Tennessee, George C. Martin Aug 1932

The Effect Of Physiography On The Trade Routes Of East Tennessee, George C. Martin

Masters Theses

Preface: The parallelism of the topographic forms of East Tennessee is classic in the world. The influence of topography on the trade routes of the region is evident from a map of roads or railroads. This paper is an attempt to show the adjustment of trade routes to physiographic forms in East Tennessee.
