This two-part presentation will cover the SMU institutional repository and the IRIS Publications system module. SMU launched the institutional repository in January 2010 and has grown the collections since. The IRIS Publications system module was launched in January 2016 with an integrated workflow in acquiring, organizing and disseminating faculty publications. The Library will share the road to building a successful repository, interfacing with the IRIS Publications system module, while embracing the principles of open access.

Freshmen at Singapore Management University are required to attend library orientation in person before their first term. Traditional workshops were replaced in 2012 by LibQuest, a problem-based activity which received positive feedback from students.
However, due to increasing sizes of each freshmen cohort, we started considering alternatives which were more scalable and sustainable.
In 2015, we collaborated with a student team from the School of Information Systems on a Proof of Concept: a mobile app that allows on-demand library orientation.
In the app, users are tasked to capture “monsters” scattered throughout the library. The app alerts users if there are …

Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries’ learning spaces are managed on the basis of an active collaboration between students and library staff. The SMU Libraries’ experience affirms Logan’s (2012) statement that “…intelligent collaborations between librarians and students is a partnership that enhances both the library and the students” (318). Beyond this, an outcome of the partnership between SMU students and library staff has created an evidence-based learning space design and management framework and brought about learning outcomes for both students and library staff. These collaborations have strengthened competencies ranging from critical thinking, problem solving and research skills to stakeholder management, scenario …

In order to develop strong campus connections and to expand the reach of library services, it’s important for librarians to engage with faculty and students beyond the library and classroom environments. Some ways in which librarians may do this are through attending campus events, conducting outreach activities in areas such as student resident halls, and by simply visiting campus coffee shops and cafeterias.

To demonstrate the value of academic library, it is imperative to align library’s role and outcomes with the parent institution’s vision and mission (Cottrell, 2011). This paper discusses Singapore Management University Libraries’ initiatives, to tie up library’s instructional services with the university’s vision, especially through collaboration with schools and other departments within the university.
Singapore Management University has a ten-year vision to be an iconic university that provides transformative education for a new generation of graduates. The transformative education translates into an active learning which consists of 3 components: mindset for collaboration, curriculum based on experiential learning, and spaces for …

Information Seeking Behavior Of Expats In Asia On Facebook Open Groups, Priyanka Sharma, Sumita Govindan
Information Seeking Behavior Of Expats In Asia On Facebook Open Groups, Priyanka Sharma, Sumita Govindan
Research Collection Library
With the rise of the global economy and an increasingly mobile global workforce, expat communities are commonplace the world over. Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an increasingly important role in keeping people connected, facilitating the formation of virtual communities based on interest, stage of life, profession and other commonalities. These virtual communities, much in the same way as traditional communities, feature social transactions of different kinds, including information seeking. Using content analysis, our study seeks to delineate patterns of information seeking on three Facebook groups for expats in terms of the categories of information sought and shared, speed of responses …

The well-established measures of recall and precision are becoming increasingly relevant in WSD systems. Given the way that most people search, which is the simple keyword box that searches all text anywhere in the record, WSD systems will lead to increasingly large recall as we provide access to more linked items. Do we need to be careful about the sheer volume of items to which we can provide access via WSD systems? Do we want these systems to become another Google, where precision of results is not always as accurate as we would like? Are we too obsessed with the …

The Association of College and Research Library’s (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education is a key document for developing and guiding information literacy programmes. In this opinion piece the author posits that the Framework is inclusive of themes and elements that support digital literacy as well, whether it is viewed as a unique literacy or as part of the broader literacy of information literacy. The paper explores the background of the Framework, definitions of digital literacy, and the ways in which the Framework connects to digital literacy. The author argues that the Framework is a relevant guide for …

This paper presents two collaborative programs at a small academic library that leverage the insights, engagement, and interests of our most important asset: our staff. Two new library committees, the Staff Training Advisory Group and the Marketing Team, extended planning, accountability, and partnerships to paraprofessional staff members. The onset and associated activities of these two committees yielded not only direct results in terms of staff training programs and marketing initiatives, but also resulted in creating a more collaborative culture and shared purpose in our library. This paper examines how the overlap of these two committees created a convergence that fostered …

Detecting occupancy of seats in library is important for librarians to check seats’ usage, and for students to find available seats in crowded time. In our prior work [1], we presented in-lab micro benchmarks to show feasibility of capacitive sensing for seat occupancy detection. In this demo paper, we present larger scale real-world deployment of occupancy detection system and its performance.

SMU moved from an in-house research publications solution to a commercial solution with integrated workflows for research management. The Library is the module lead for the Publications Module. The new Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) went live with the Publication Module as the first module in July 2015. The presentation covers the features of the new IRIS, the challenges of going live with the module, the benefits of the new IRIS. IRIS comes with new functionalities and integration with Scopus, Web of Science, and SherpaRomeo. This gave the Library opportunities to improve workflows, to review the system, to put in …

Data from research with humans is not published or shared at the same rate as other disciplines. But as more funding agencies and journal publishers, including those responsible for human studies, encourage and incentivise researchers to publish these data, more are seeking to do so. Human data often include personal and sensitive information that makes them subject to privacy laws and the human research ethics standards that govern research institutions. In many cases, human data can be published and shared safely and ethically with great success when it is planned for, participants are informed, and privacy is maintained by confidentialising …
