A Twenty-First-Century Strategy To Counter Russia, China, And Iran, Sorin Matei Feb 2022

A Twenty-First-Century Strategy To Counter Russia, China, And Iran, Sorin Matei

FORCES Initiative: Strategy, Security, and Social Systems

The FORCES white paper / report A Twenty-First-Century Strategy to Counter Russia, China, and Iran published by the National Interest proposes a new approach to American foreign policy, which provides the flexibility needed to handle two major international conflicts at the same time. We propose "cascading realism," The United States should consider a strategy of selective and deeply collaborative realism. The new realism should rely on three principles: a convergence of purpose; flexibility of action and shared and cascading responsibility. The second principle is the most important. It requires disconnecting the understanding of U.S. national interests from maintaining a maximal …

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster Jan 2022

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

Information literacy is essential for business students as they prepare for the workplace they will enter after leaving the university. Prior to graduation, students must also prepare for the information needs they will experience during internships and co-ops. To optimize instruction and teach students the information literacy skills they will need on-the-job, librarians need to understand what information sources employers require students to use during internship/co-op experiences and in what ways. In this study we surveyed business students and alumni at a large Midwestern university who had completed an internship or co-op regarding their information use during these workplace experiences.

Momentary Energy Levels In Healthcare Professionals Working With Facility Dogs, Shania Sinha, Clare Jensen, Marguerite O'Haire

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Past research has shown that pediatric healthcare professionals working with full-time therapy dogs (facility dogs) reported less work-related burnout and better mental health overall. However, specific in-the-moment effects of facility dogs on healthcare professionals have yet to be examined. The purpose of this study was to use Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to assess the effects of facility dog presence on momentary energy levels of pediatric healthcare professionals. EMA data for the present study were collected from 122 healthcare professionals working in pediatric hospitals. Within the sample, participants working with a facility dog (handlers; n=61) were …

Fair Resource Allocation To Reduce Inequalities In Criminal Justice & Healthcare, Alex Liu, Alexia Rodrigues Jan 2022

Fair Resource Allocation To Reduce Inequalities In Criminal Justice & Healthcare, Alex Liu, Alexia Rodrigues

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Together, we are working to identify discrepancies in the criminal justice system that put substance users at an unfair advantage for possible treatment and success in the future. This is done by modeling regressions involving the arrest-rates, developing charts to show the patterns of past arrests, and tracking the resources available for substance users. By doing this, we provide models to the local sheriff office that forecasts incoming inmates which allows the office to prepare accordingly. On the flip side, we are working to create a prediction model that exemplifies the risk of relapse for substance users. Ultimately, our goal …

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker Jan 2022

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards, there is a need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with collections decisions. An existing body of literature about the contents of the collections exists, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the business relationships libraries maintain in order to acquire these collections. In this paper, librarians from Purdue University take a critical approach to identifying the values of their institution at multiple levels, including a newly released Libraries strategic plan, to create a values-based evaluation tool for future collection assessment.

Diversity, Equity And Inclusion In Human-Animal Interaction, Nira N. Grynheim, Clare E. Jensen, Marguerite L. O'Haire

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) is a growing field investigating the complex relationships humans have with animals. Human diversity in HAI, or lack thereof, may have a direct influence on the way HAI data is interpreted and presented. Previous research has studied how apparent disability, racial, sexual or other diversifying identities might affect how humans interact with the world and their pets. However, thus far, there has been little research published on how inequitable barriers towards underrepresented minorities (URM) might play a role in how HAI is studied, interpreted and presented. The present study investigated human diversity among leaders in the HAI …

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Oct 2021

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

The Lactation at Work Law amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate employer accommodation of employees’ breast milk expression. Interviews with employees, human resource specialists, and supervising managers in nine industries found that some organizations’ supervising managers, who initially perceived accommodations only as a legal mandate furthering managerial goals, over time changed to understanding lactation accommodations through a children’s-health lens that created morality-driven motivations for legal compliance–a “moralization of the law.” Educational discussions with lactating employees not only provided these supervising managers with insights into lactation at work, but also sensitized them to ethical issues surrounding lactation accommodations.

Teaching With Data In The Social Sciences: The Purdue Report, Jane Yatcilla, Clarence Maybee, Bethany Mcgowan, Gang Shao, D Trevor Burrows

Libraries Reports

Purdue University Libraries participated in a multi-institution study about how instructors teach with data in social sciences courses. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with social sciences faculty who teach undergraduate students to use data, addressing questions about how faculty connect students to data; how students work with data; what types of support faculty have received that informs their teaching with data. Four broad themes emerged from qualitative coding of the interview transcripts: an array of purposes and practices for teaching about data; instructors' experiences, needs, and perspectives; managing wide-ranging student confidence and ability; technical concerns when teaching with data. The …

How Libraries Responded In The Early Days Of The Pandemic: A Study Of The Lis Literature, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Sarah Young

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

As we emerge from an unprecedented pandemic that saw closure of libraries, schools, and universities worldwide, we can begin to assess potential lasting impacts on institutions, professions and communities. Through a rapid bibliometric study of COVID-19-related library publishing, we provide a first glimpse into the impacts of the pandemic on library operations, services, collections, and the workforce. We identified and analyzed 237 journal articles published in 2020 about libraries and the pandemic. These articles indicate broad cross-sectoral, global impacts on libraries and librarianship. Our analysis provides a baseline for future research on lasting effects of the pandemic on the field.

Data Analytics For Humanities And Historical Analysis, Henry Wu

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Historical text and images feed the complex narrative we view history with today. In some cases, references to recurring situations in the form of a diary or a series of maps can become quantifiable data in the form of a visual record. Analytics can be performed on maps of military campaigns tracking the movement of troops over time, a form of time series data, and on casualty lists recording the when, where and from which individual soldiers fell in battle. Our project utilizes primary data from maps and casualty reports concerning World War II battles, specifically from the Eastern Front, …

Visitor (Tourist) Harassment Research: Delphi Panels, Shweta Singh, Annmarie Nicely, Liping Cai, Jonathan Day

Visitor Harassment Research Unit Special Papers

The harassment of visitors at destinations is a pressing problem globally. It is also an emerging area of scholastic inquiry. This article explores one research technique that, despite its ability to generate new and innovative solutions to a range of problems, is not currently used in visitor harassment (VH) research: the Delphi Panel Research Method. The authors assert, if applied correctly, the technique could significantly advance knowledge in this research stream. The article also explores the technique’s evolution; the broad thoughts on which the technique is based; when the technique should be used; how the technique should be applied; …

Applying Social Science To Bring Resident Stakeholders Into Pollution Governance: A Rural Environmental Justice Public Health Case Study, Sherrie M. Steiner, Jordan M. Marshall, Atefeh Mohammadpour, Aaron W. Thompson

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

The purpose of this engaged public sociology study was to use social science to bring resident stakeholders into the process of governing pollution production in a rural community. The community has cancer clusters. Residents have concerns about direct exposure to pollution production in their neighborhood by a steel recycling plant that has been cited numerous times for environmental violations. The facility has been under voluntary remediation since 2009, but neighborhood residents were marginalized from the governance process. This case study details how social science was used to bring neighborhood residents’ concerns about direct exposure to toxic air pollution into remediation …

Exploring Biological Information: Document And Discover Descriptions Of Life, Chao Cai

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

The human description and documentation of life has a long history as early as the ancient civilizations. For centuries, biological information, or information about life was preserved mostly as scientific article, illustrations, or permanent specimens. However, the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA in the 1950s, especially the launch of the Human Genome Project in the 1980s, significantly impacted the way we document information about life. This presentation will discuss the history and major formats of how biological information is documented and preserved, as well as tools to discover curated and archived biological information.

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

While PTSD service dogs are specifically trained to interact with their veterans, emerging evidence suggests that service dogs may also have an impact on other members of veteran households. To our knowledge, only one study quantifies these effects focused on veteran spouses (McCall et al., 2020). Our study aimed to quantitatively measure the impact of PTSD service dogs on military family wellbeing. Data was collected from survey responses of 88 veteran spouses who rated their experiences on standardized outcome measures. Each spouse answered the surveys at two time points: (1) baseline, and (2) three months post-baseline (follow-up). Spouses in the …
