An Ethical Framework For Library Publishing Version 2.0, Tina Baich, Nina Collins, Jaime Ding, Abigail Gulya, Zoe Wake Hyde, Bernadette A. Lear, Joshua Neds-Fox, Charlotte Roh, Melanie Schlosser, Kate Shuttleworth, Christine Turner

LPC Publications

Conceived at the Library Publishing Forum in 2017, the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing was a first-of-its-kind document for the LPC and the library publishing community. But remarkable social upheaval in the ensuing years, along with the continued maturation of our discipline, prompted the LPC to convene a task force to update the Framework for our current environment. What the task force developed, to our surprise, looks very little like the original document. An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing Version 2.0 is a true framework to help library publishers set an ethical baseline for their programs and activities. Consisting of …

An Early Look At A Scoping Review Of Systematic Review Methodologies In Engineering, Jason Reed, Margaret Phillips, Amy Van Epps, Dave Zwicky

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This research work-in-progress paper is a scoping review of published systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in engineering. SLRs are considered one of the highest levels of proof for evidence based decision making, but they are only as good as the methods used, starting with the search strategy. With studies described as “systematic literature reviews” proliferating through engineering disciplines, including engineering education, it is necessary to examine how well these studies reflect a methodologically sound understanding of established SLR processes. The initial search returned 4,992 results, after removing duplicates. After completing the abstract review, we included 2,674 results for full text review. …

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inspired by the University of Iowa’s Beyond the PDF event last year, the Purdue Graduate School evaluated their policies pertaining to theses and dissertations. The evaluation concluded last summer and found that existing policies were unclear regarding acceptable types of theses, in particular, requiring submission in the PDF format. As students continue to utilize emerging technologies and publish journal articles to supplement their research, policies were rewritten to include non-traditional formats and types of theses. The challenges, motivations, and inspirations for the new policies will be shared as well as early indications of their impacts.

The Doctoral Dissertation: Observations, Perspectives, Protean Nature?, Jean-Pierre Herubel

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dissertations represent different doctoral cultures as well as artifacts of research achievement. Beyond general contours identifiable as contribution to knowledge, the dissertation is as much symbol as acculturation within disciplinary cultures. Each dissertation represents training, discovery, unique contribution, as well as the acculturative properties inherent to the dissertation’s liminal process and raison d'être. This exploratory presentation challenges us to consider what the dissertation is and how it may vary in purpose and form.

Visualizing Scholarly Communication, Nina Collins, Matthew Hannah

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Researchers at Purdue are collaborating on just such a project by applying digital tools to the analysis of predatory publishing. In …

A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer Mar 2015

A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. In this session, you will hear from three successful library publishers who have embraced this external facing aspect of publishing. …
