Command Line Crash Course, Cole Hudson
Library Scholarly Publications
This workshop introduced participants to the basics of the command line, a text-based interface found in modern operating systems. This workshop took place at the Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners Fall 2018 meeting at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
Using Old Streets To Make New Inroads To Data: Part 1, Cole Hudson
Using Old Streets To Make New Inroads To Data: Part 1, Cole Hudson
Library Scholarly Publications
This presentation was given at the 2018 Code4Lib Midwest conference. It told of an ongoing project at Wayne State to digitize and convert a book full of useful street data into a digital form. This book contained information on the re-mapping of Detroit streets in 1923, and the aim of this project was to build a widely accessible web platform with which to query this information.

The Importance Of Impact, Tish Wagner, Michael Organ
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
A presentation on the importance of impact in regards to research publications - why it matters; how to create impact for a program and school; and how to keep and grow that impact globally through the use of an open access institutional repository. An example of the bepress Digital Commons repository at the University of Wollongong, Australia, is provided.

Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) are of interest owing to the low cost of their raw materials and their ease of fabrication, making them suitable for applications requiring relatively high-volume production. The improved properties of PRMMCs result from the addition of hard ceramic particles (such as Al2O3 or SiC); the size, shape, volume fraction, interfacial properties and distribution of these (together with the fabrication method) determine the mechanical behaviour of the composite. However, PRMMCs have inferior ductility, toughness and low-cycle fatigue properties compared with unreinforced alloys, often limiting their usefulness in practice. Reinforcements of between 15 volume % and …

A350 grade black mild steel is one of the most widely used structural materials in the world, being commonly found in buildings, bridges and offshore structures.Welding is commonly used to join two plates of structural steel and this often takes the form of a T-butt.In addition, other more complex geometrical joints are often simplified for stress analysis purposes by approximating them as 2-D T-butt plate models (e.g. skewed T-joints, cruciform welded joints, tubular welded joints, pipe–plate joints, etc.).However, all such welds are potentially susceptible to fatigue crack initiation and slow but accelerating growth arising as a result of fluctuating service …
