This workshop presents “5 Simple Steps” for initiating and sustaining community-academic partnerships. Participants will move through the 5 steps to consider the unique aspects of community-academic partnerships, the importance of deliberate and intentional conversations to find mutual benefit, and knowing when/if to terminate the partnership.

Community partners will be encouraged to consider how community initiatives align with academic aspects of research, teaching, and service.

Workshop Overview: The higher education landscape is changing, and universities of the future may bear little resemblance to the institutions that have existed for the past 100 years. This workshop will help participants understand the intersections between a changing higher education landscape and community engagement. Participants will explore new models for organizing academic work (i.e., teaching, research, and service) in ways that promote student success and address community-identified needs.

I wrote my story book based on diversity and to show empathy to people with differences. To teach kids that we are not all the same and yet each of us has our own value to this world. I wrote the book based on my family's dog and kitten and how they live with one another. The end result is that we just need to show love to each other in order to accept our differences.

For our service learning project, our group decided to make dog treats and sell them to raise money for the local animal shelter. On the side of making dog treats, we also accepted blanket donations and cash donations. It was more difficult than anticipated to sell the dog treats but we eventually did it and raise around $70 for the animal shelter to use to keep the animals warm and healthy through the winter. There were challenges in the beginning trying to meet up with everybody and assign specific duties to group members but overall we were successful and learned …

A story about a girl Kamalani who moves to a different school. Emily, a student at the school notices that Kamalani doesn't look the same as the others students at the school. She goes home that night and asks to her mom about the new girl Kamalani. Then next day, she talks to Kamalani and finds out that they have lots of things in common and so Emily invites her over to her house to have a puppy play date. From there on they are the best of friends!

Our project consisted of raising money for the Twin Falls Animal Shelter. The group had baskets donated that we then sold raffle tickets for. All proceeds were used to purchase items off of the Twin Falls Animal Shelter's Wish List, and the items were donated to the shelter.

This poster describes a children's book called Brave Little Phoebe about a dog who develops diabetes and goes blind. Brave Little Phoebe was written to be read to pre-school to 2nd-grade children to convey the ideals of empathy and perseverance and was read to children on the Bells for Books mobile library bus in Garden City, Idaho.

As group for a communications course at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI), we were a part of a service learning project. The project goal was to do a coat drive for the college refugee program. We wanted to help supply coats for those who perhaps don't have the means of buying coats for themselves or for their family. We got the word out by creating and posting flyers, and posting in the college newsletter. We set up donation boxes around the college. We were able to donate two giant Home Depot boxes of coats to the program.
