Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The development of civilization in the 21st century requires a different perspective in education. The rapid development of technology and information cannot be anticipated by blocking its use in the world of education. A lot of knowledge and knowledge is easily conveyed through technology media whose development is difficult to contain. The development of civilization must be a challenge for educators to prepare superior resources and become winners in global competition. Improvement and implementation of the 2013 Curriculum at the primary and secondary education levels is carried out in order to equip students with competencies that they can live life …
Senior Citizens And Digital Information Access: The Obstruction Of Comforting Silence, Rodney C. Lawley
Senior Citizens And Digital Information Access: The Obstruction Of Comforting Silence, Rodney C. Lawley
The Southeastern Librarian
This study investigates the possibility of undetected access obstructions preventing senior citizens from using digital information maintained by Alabama public libraries. Research methods include a literature review, a survey of Alabama public library administrators, and a textual analysis of online public library programming guides from four urban areas within the state. The survey gauges the perceptions, experiences, and actions of library administrators pertaining to digital library accessibility for senior citizens. The textual analysis component measures significant outreach efforts by public libraries targeting senior citizen patrons. Data collected suggest that Alabama public libraries lack unity and direction in their approach to …

Does Proactivity Drive Use? Understanding Growth In Chat Reference Services, David A. Hurley, Adrienne Warner
Does Proactivity Drive Use? Understanding Growth In Chat Reference Services, David A. Hurley, Adrienne Warner
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Libraries that implement trigger-initiated proactive chat reference services see substantial increases in the number and complexity of reference transactions. However, it is not clear if this growth is a result of something inherent to proactivity, or other factors such as increased awareness of the service. To investigate this, we compare usage during periods with and without proactivity in databases in which our chat reference service is established. Steep and immediate increases when proactivity is enabled and sharp declines when it is disabled suggests that proactivity itself is driving the changes. We recommend human computer interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX) …

Practicing Organizational Care: Using Human-Centered Approaches To Facilitate Change In Your Library, Meghan Musolff, Annie Bélanger
Presentations
Most traditional change management practices seek to mitigate risk. They focus on process and implementation over listening, compassion, and healing. By using human-centered change methodologies and approaches, we will explore ways to tailor change efforts in ways that honor the individuals and the organization. We will consider how to engage in a change that harnesses the strengths of the team, making space for voices to be heard.

Ai-Informed Approaches To Keyword Generation, Text Summarization, And Document Clustering For Improved Resource Discovery, Charlie Harper, Anne Kumer, Shelby Stuart, Evan Meszaros
Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
Academic and cultural institutions are grappling with problems of how to organize, label, and search disparate bodies of texts. As aggregators, preservers, and disseminators of substantial repositories of digital texts, research libraries are naturally situated at the heart of these problems. This chapter explores how unsupervised machine learning may be used to capture and simplify the complexity and nuances of text. Traditional approaches to improving discoverability and accessibility of text through metadata and controlled vocabularies have time-tested strengths. As the volume of digital data explodes, the obstacles and limitations of traditional approaches become more pronounced, and machine learning “show(s) the …

Perioperative Protocol To Prevent Emergence Delirium In Patients With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Audrianna Bustos, Roxanne Sambuca
DNP Scholarly Projects
Introduction: Ten percent of adults will experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point during their lifetime, 50% of which remain untreated and undiagnosed. Perioperative management of the patient with PTSD may create significant challenges for the anesthesia provider. Patients with PTSD are more likely to experience emergence delirium (ED), which poses a significant safety threat to patients and staff. Screening for PTSD is routine in the veteran population but has not yet translated into common practice. To our knowledge, no protocol currently exists for anesthetic management of patients with PTSD. Routine screening for PTSD in the preoperative period and …

Open Access Enables New Tools And Features, Aaron Tay
Research Collection Library
Open Access levels are now at a tipping point. According to Digital Science’s Dimensions for the year 2020, Open Access surpassed subscription publication globally for the first time (Hook, 2021). Similarly in Dec 2020, with Elsevier agreeing to deposit open references to Crossref (the last major publisher to do), over 90% of Crossref references are now open (Hutchin, 2021). The combination of these two trends, both Open Access to full text and Open Scholarly metadata as well as Machine learning techniques has led to a rise of new tools in areas such as literature mapping , new indexes and new …

Pandemic Transitions: The Impact Of Covid 19 On Hiring And Onboarding In Academic Libraries, Lauren M. Fletcher, Roslyn Grandy, Faythe Thurman, Rachel Whitney
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Objectives: To explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected hiring and onboarding practices in academic libraries.
Methods: An embedded mixed-methods approach, utilizing grounded theory, was used to develop an online survey to identify changes that occurred in hiring and onboarding practices in academic libraries resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were hiring managers (including human resources staff, library administration, search committee chairs, or library supervisors) in an academic library setting. Invitations to participate were sent to multiple academic library listservs and social media groups.
Results: Results will be analyzed to determine trends in hiring and onboarding practices …

Meeting The Needs Of Online Students Through Creative Reimagining And Collaboration With Instructors, Jenn Monnin, Beth Nardella
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This chapter presents a case study where a Health Sciences Librarian and an Exercise Physiology Professor at an R1 University transformed two library instruction sessions into one graded online assignment. Successful student outcomes proved the asynchronous online method worth continuing for future courses regardless of class format.
The typical instruction methods and experimental modifications made to accommodate remote learning demanded by the COVID-19 pandemic and online course sections will be presented in this chapter. Student learning outcomes will be examined followed by a discussion of best practices discovered during the project. A final recommendation will be made for librarian and …

Learning From Each Other: Peer-Reviewed Literature Searching, Heather Martin, Danielle Linden, Carrie Grinstead
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: Amidst shrinking staff and increased demand for services, a peer-learning program was developed to build literature search capacity and self-efficacy amongst staff at a large health system. A secondary objective of this program was to provide team-building opportunities for colleagues who may not work together directly. Participants included ten professional librarians and two library specialists working as part of a centralized department spread across seven western states with most staff working remotely or alone on site with few opportunities to meet in person. This project was first presented as a lightning talk at MLA ’22 and due to positive …
