Debris, Diatoms, And Dolphins: Tracking Child Engagement At A Public Science Festival, Kaya Van Beynen, Theresa G. Burress

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Visitors to public science festivals have a tremendous amount of free choice to decide how to navigate through the festival, as well as when, where, and how long to stop at an exhibit. This study examines how elementary-aged children individually or collaboratively engaged with festival exhibits at a public science festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. Although many exhibit activities are designed to appeal to children, no research has been done with regard to child engagement with one-day, outdoor science festivals, such as this one. Engagement can be measured by unobtrusive observation of the behavior and interactions of children. Factors that …

Information Needs Of Korean Immigrant Mothers In The United States For Their Children’S College Preparation, Jungwon Yoon, Soojung Kim, Natalie Taylor

School of Information Faculty Publications

This study aims to understand the information needs of Korean immigrant mothers in the United States for their high school children’s college preparation. A content analysis was conducted for the messages posted to a “motherhood” forum on the MissyUSA website. In total, 754 posts were analyzed in terms of a child’s grade, college preparation stage, type of post, and topic of post. The study found that there is a range of information needed at different stages in a child’s education. Many of the demonstrated information needs showed similarities to those of other immigrant groups, but there were also community-specific themes, …

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Burns, Senge, And The Study Of Leadership, W. Michael Reid, Claudia J. Dold

Tampa Library Faculty and Staff Publications

James MacGregor Burns and Peter Senge have been two of the most influential writers on leadership over the past 40 years. This paper is based, in part, on a survey of articles published in four leading leadership Journals (Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Journal of Leadership Studies, Leadership, and Open Journal of Leadership) to determine how the concepts of Burns and Senge were used in the articles. Each journal was searched from its first issue through January 1, 2018 for references to Burns and Senge. The authors found frequent references to each of them, but no systematic, adequate summary …

Navigating The Political Waters Of Open Access Publishing In Libraries, Carol Ann Davis, Wendy Robertson, Charlene Simser

Digital Scholarship Services Faculty and Staff Publications

The presenters will share their research on politics in library publishing, published in 2016 in the book "Open Access and the Future of Scholarly Communication." Many libraries have forayed into the world of open access (OA) publishing, marking a major shift in the mission of libraries to move from providing access to content to generating and creating content. The presenters will discuss the politics and issues involved, highlight the approaches various libraries have taken—and the challenges faced—in selecting a platform, writing a business plan, planning for preservation, educating researchers about OA publishing, working with a university press, marketing, and navigating …

Something Old, Something New , Something Bold, Something Cool: A Marriage Of Two Repositories, Carol Ann Davis, Jason Boczar

Digital Scholarship Services Faculty and Staff Publications

For the past several years, many libraries have been developing institutional repositories to house their open access publishing efforts to both showcase and preserve their faculty’s research. Some of those same libraries have been building sizable digital collections, often built from digitized versions of materials in their special collections. So what happens when you put these two groups together? The University of South Florida Tampa Library did exactly that by creating a new Digital Scholarship Services unit. The union of these two groups has created new synergies between staff in complementary areas of the library, as we combine unique skill …

For many years, the Temple Terrace Public Library maintained copies of the Temple Terrace Beacon. This local publication, first published in 1931, focused on news and events in the City of Temple Terrace as well as the surrounding University community. Kelsey Peduzzi, a librarian at the Temple Terrace Public Library, embarked on a project to scan and digitize issues of the newspaper in the library’s possession. After this successful project led to the creation of a digital archive of more than 800 issues of the newspaper on the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative’s digital collections webpage, the library decided that …

Remember When Ebooks Were All The Rage? A Look At Student Preferences For Printed Text Versus Electronic, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten L. Cox Jan 2017

Remember When Ebooks Were All The Rage? A Look At Student Preferences For Printed Text Versus Electronic, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten L. Cox

School of Information Faculty Publications

Aim/Purpose: In many public and academic libraries, ebooks are being pushed on users mainly due to budgetary and space needs even though readers are still showing a strong preference for print books.

Background: Many librarians are focusing on how to get readers to use ebooks when they really should be considering how ebooks fit into learning, whether formal or self-learning, and the preferences that readers show for one format over the other. Library collections since the 1960s have generally focused on a strategy of “give them what they want,” but in the case of ebooks, there seems to be a …

Career Plateauing Among Senior Librarians., Tina M. Neville, Deborah B. Henry

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, senior academic librarians were asked to reflect on the factors that keep them personally fulfilled and on how they remain motivated to make positive contributions to their organization. Motivations include esteem of colleagues and supervisors, variety in their work, salary, opportunities to learn new skills, increasing responsibility, and working with students and faculty. 59% percent of the survey respondents ranked their job satisfaction at 8 (on a scale of 1—10, with 10 the most satisfied). Using Bardwick’s definitions of plateauing, 60% of the 20 librarians interviewed did not feel that they were content-plateaued.

Stay Calm And Cover Your Assessment: Creating A Culture Of Assessment On A Shoestring, Susan Silver, Audrey Powers, Matt Torrence

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic libraries engage in assessment for a variety of reasons. Improving processes, responding to customer needs, fulfilling accreditation reporting requirements, and demonstrating impact and value to the institution are just a few. Many academic libraries find themselves in the position of being required to prove they are fulfilling a mission that contributes to the academic success of students and their value to the institution. Assessment is no longer a choice for libraries, it has become an expectation. Although most libraries are already doing some form of assessment, there seems to be little effort in many institutions to build a culture …

Womyn’s Words was a monthly periodical published by the Women’s Energy Bank, Inc. that began in 1983. Pat Ditto and other editors and contributors to this publication devoted their efforts to the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay area in support of the local LGBTQ+ community. Although they primarily advocated for the empowerment and civil rights of women, they also spent a significant amount of time supporting political causes that would benefit the gay community as a whole. Significantly, Womyn’s Words, as early as 1996, was promoting intersectional awareness with their “Afro-Centric Series.” A large portion of their publications was used …

Scholarly Publishing Literacy: Reaching Our Researchers, Carol Borchert, Jason Boczar May 2016

Scholarly Publishing Literacy: Reaching Our Researchers, Carol Borchert, Jason Boczar

Digital Scholarship Services Faculty and Staff Publications

For the past several years, librarians have been building repositories and publishing programs, becoming increasingly adept in producing and determining the quality of open access publications. Though researchers may be experts within their own subject areas, many aspects of the publishing process remain a mystery to them. Understanding when to request copyright permissions or how to negotiate their own rights with publishers are sometimes afterthoughts in the research process. Some of our faculty or even students may fall prey to predatory publishing practices, not knowing what criteria to apply in evaluating new publication outlets. In our role as library publishers, …
