Persistent Identifiers And The Next Generation Of Legal Scholarship, Aaron Retteen, Malikah Hall-Retteen
Persistent Identifiers And The Next Generation Of Legal Scholarship, Aaron Retteen, Malikah Hall-Retteen
Faculty Scholarship
This article discusses the importance of the most common persistent identifiers in scholarly communications—the digital object identifier and the ORCID identifier—to legal scholarship. Persistent identifiers help preserve and disseminate academic content and data-driven services that leverage this information standard are now integrated into the publication process. Because legal publishers have not widely adopted persistent identifiers, the legal discipline cannot enjoy the benefits offered by this system. This article looks at barriers to implementing persistent identifiers among legal publishers and provides an anecdotal example of creating a sustainable workflow between the law library and student-run law journals.

A Compilation, Analysis, And Categorization Of 403 Atmospheric And Climate Science Misconceptions, Haeli Leighty
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) has listed the inaccessibility of research related to misconceptions in atmospheric and climate science as a Geoscience Education Research Grand Challenge (Cervato et al. 2018). This project was a direct response to this call for research and consisted of three distinct steps: 1) data gathering, which included reviewing the literature for relevant misconception data, 2) a qualitative analysis, which included compiling, organizing, and categorizing the data collected, and 3) a quantitative analysis, which included determining the prevalence of each misconception across topic categories, demographic categories, and over time. A total of 403 misconceptions …

Reflecting Deeply: Why A Philosophy Of Reference Services Should Direct Every Ri, Bethany Radcliffe, Garrett Trott
Reflecting Deeply: Why A Philosophy Of Reference Services Should Direct Every Ri, Bethany Radcliffe, Garrett Trott
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article distinguishes between a philosophy and a theory of reference services. Philosophy explores why practitioners do something, whereas theory explores the actual practice without necessarily reflecting on the why behind it. The authors argue that a personal philosophy of reference services is needed, as librarians’ values ultimately drive the reference services they provide. Much of the current literature on this topic explores theories of reference services as opposed to the philosophies behind them. The authors first examine the gap in the LIS literature pertaining to a philosophy of reference services. They then define three premises upon which they base …

Decistifying Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion In Library Work: A Literature Review, Stephen G. Krueger, Keahi Adolpho
Decistifying Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion In Library Work: A Literature Review, Stephen G. Krueger, Keahi Adolpho
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
This comprehensive review illuminates the current state of scholarly literature on trans and gender diverse inclusion in libraries, with the intention to provide a foundation and identify gaps for further research. Covering 50 works published between 2002 and 2023 in the areas of general inclusion, public libraries, academic libraries, experiences of library workers, archives, information behavior, and cataloging, we found that, with the exception of works on archives and cataloging, little scholarly literature goes beyond introductory talking points on basic information about trans and gender diverse people. We conclude with a call for much more in-depth research on this essential …

Equity work and open educational resources may seem like an obvious pairing, but how much do we as open education advocates connect these dots and articulate this important relationship?
The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) was one of five U.S. institutions to receive a grant to pilot the Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success (DOERS3) Equity Through OER Rubric. Members (36 higher education systems in the U.S. and Canada) of DOERS3 created the rubric to help define, unpack, and explain the multiple dimensions of equity and foreground the role of OER in closing equity gaps. The final rubric project portfolio …

Ebook Management In Ex Libris’ Alma: A Tale Of Two Workflows, Michelle Ehrenpreis, Sonali Sugrim
Publications and Research
In August 2020, CUNY transitioned to ExLibris’ Alma, a cloud-based Library Services Platform (LSP). Led by the Office of Library Services (OLS), the migration resulted in new processes to replace existing ones. This case study describes how Lehman College and Queens College, both part of CUNY, created new workflows for ordering, invoicing, activating, and cataloging eBooks in Alma. A new workflow for activating eBooks was also necessary because CUNY would now be using Ex Libris’ Primo VE, an upgraded discovery system. The article discusses the challenges of staff training and the role of the electronic resources librarian in designing and …
