Writing Center And Library Collaboration: A Telephone Survey Of Academic Libraries, Lily Todorinova Apr 2010

Writing Center And Library Collaboration: A Telephone Survey Of Academic Libraries, Lily Todorinova

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Writing and researching are highly interrelated processes and there is much overlap between the goals and responsibilities of writing center staff and librarians. There is little evidence, however, that partnership between writing centers and libraries has been instituted as standard practice in academic institutions. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore the current state of the relationship between the writing center and the library. A telephone survey was administered to librarians in a sample of 268 academic institutions. The results indicated that only 26.7% of libraries actively collaborate which their university’s writing center. A strong majority of the …

To Use Print Serials Or Not To Use Print Serials: That Is The Survey(Monkey), Matt Torrence, Jared Hoppenfeld Apr 2010

To Use Print Serials Or Not To Use Print Serials: That Is The Survey(Monkey), Matt Torrence, Jared Hoppenfeld

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

A recent Print Serials Review was conducted at the University of South Florida Tampa Library with the intention of replacing low-use print titles with high-demand print or electronic resources. Two concepts motivated this project. 1) Journals have long been an important resource for an academic institution, but the format in which these resources are primarily used has changed with increased electronic availability. 2) Collection development librarians at USF wish to deliver high-demand resources to their faculty and students. In today’s economy, in order to make this concept a reality, low-use titles must be relinquished.

This presentation will consist of two …

Born in Pau, France, of an American G.I. father and a French mother, Odette Patterson (nee Walling) came to the United States with her family following the end of World War I. After succeeding in a series of secretarial jobs at various places, she worked her way up to becoming a well-regarded advertising manager with First Federal Savings and Loan Association of St. Petersburg. Rethinking Collection Development In Disaster Mental Health: An “All Hazards” Model, Claudia J. Dold, Ardis Hanson Jan 2010

Rethinking Collection Development In Disaster Mental Health: An “All Hazards” Model, Claudia J. Dold, Ardis Hanson

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

The connection between weather-related disasters and mental health is bound up in treatment, both acute and long-term, of suddenly vulnerable populations, whether they are in-place survivors, displaced persons, or refugees. The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) Research Library/ University of South Florida Library System has undertaken a collection focus on disaster mental health. We have re-examined the traditional models of collection development and chosen instead to frame our collection development initiative around an ‘all hazards’ model, that allows us to proceed within both a national and international framework. Our model, conceptualized in a matrix of domains …

The Karst Information Portal (KIP) is a digital library linking scientists, resource managers, and explorers with quality information resources concerning karst, an understudied natural environment that is crucial to the health and well-being of one out of every four people on Earth. Beginning in 2006 as a partnership between the University of South Florida Libraries, the National Cave & Karst Research Institute, the University of New Mexico Library, and the Union Internationale de Spéléologie (UIS), the KIP initiative has expanded to include databases concerning cave minerals, speleothem dating, and coastal cave surveys. This chapter outlines the evolution of the project …
