The free hole carriers in GaN have been limited to concentrations in the low 1018 cm−3 range due to the deep activation energy, lower solubility, and compensation from defects, therefore, limiting doping efficiency to about 1%. Herein, we report an enhanced doping efficiency up to ~10% in GaN by a periodic doping, metal modulation epitaxy growth technique. The hole concentrations grown by periodically modulating Ga atoms and Mg dopants were over ~1.5 x 1019 cm−3.

Theory And Numerics Of Gravitational Waves From Preheating After Inflation, Jean-François Dufaux, Amanda Bergman, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Jean-Philippe Uzan
Theory And Numerics Of Gravitational Waves From Preheating After Inflation, Jean-François Dufaux, Amanda Bergman, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Jean-Philippe Uzan
Physics: Faculty Publications
Preheating after inflation involves large, time-dependent field inhomogeneities, which act as a classical source of gravitational radiation. The resulting spectrum might be probed by direct detection experiments if inflation occurs at a low enough energy scale. In this paper, we develop a theory and algorithm to calculate, analytically and numerically, the spectrum of energy density in gravitational waves produced from an inhomogeneous background of stochastic scalar fields in an expanding universe. We derive some generic analytical results for the emission of gravity waves by stochastic media of random fields, which can test the validity/accuracy of numerical calculations. We contrast our …

We present measurements of the process pp̅ → WZ + X → ℓ′νℓℓ at √s = 1.96 TeV, where ℓ and ℓ′ are electrons or muons. Using 1 fb-1 of data from the D0 experiment, we observe 13 candidates with an expected background of 4.5 ± 0.6 events and measure a cross section σ(WZ) = 2.7-1.3+1.7 pb. From the number of observed events and the Z boson transverse momentum distribution, we limit the trilinear WWZ gauge couplings to -0.17 ≤ λZ ≤ 0.21(ΔκZ= 0) at the 95% C.L. for a form …

Observation Of P-Wave Threshold Behavior In Electron Attachment To F2 Molecules, M. Braun, M.-W. Ruf, Ilya I. Fabrikant, H. Hotop
Ilya Fabrikant Publications
Using the high resolution laser photoelectron attachment method, we demonstrate that the cross section for F- formation due to electron capture by F2 (X1Σg+) molecules at very low energies exhibits p-wave threshold behavior. This finding confirms the theoretical expectation that low-energy attachment to F2 proceeds through the F2-(2 Σu+) p-wave shape resonance in contrast with previous experimental claims for s-wave threshold behavior.

Ultrashort Intense-Field Optical Vortices Produced With Laser-Etched Mirrors, James Strohaber, Timothy D. Scarborough, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal
C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications
We introduce a simple and practical method to create ultrashort intense optical vortices for applications involving high-intensity lasers. Our method utilizes femtosecond laser pulses to laser etch grating lines into laser-quality gold mirrors. These grating lines holographically encode an optical vortex. We derive mathematical equations for each individual grating line to be etched, for any desired (integer) topological charge. We investigate the smoothness of the etched grooves. We show that they are smooth enough to produce optical vortices with an intensity that is only a few percent lower than in the ideal case. We demonstrate that the etched gratings can …

Merged Ionization/Dissociation Fronts In Planetary Nebulae, William J. Henney, R. J. R. Williams, Gary J. Ferland, Gargi Shaw, C. R. O'Dell
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The hydrogen ionization and dissociation front around an ultraviolet radiation source should merge when the ratio of ionizing photon flux to gas density is sufficiently low and the spectrum is sufficiently hard. This regime is particularly relevant to the molecular knots that are commonly found in evolved planetary nebulae, such as the Helix Nebula, where traditional models of photodissociation regions have proved unable to explain the high observed luminosity in H2 lines. In this paper we present results for the structure and steady state dynamics of such advection-dominated merged fronts, calculated using the Cloudy plasma/molecular physics code. We find …

We studied the phase transitions, domain morphologies, and polarizations in BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Using the phase field approach, we discovered the remarkable influence of film/substrate interfacial coherency on the ferroelectricity of the SrTiO3 layers within a superlattice: it is an orthorhombic ferroelectric for an incoherent interface while it exhibits only induced polarization by the adjacent BaTiO3 layers for a coherent interface. We presented the domain morphologies within individual BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 layers which have different ferroelectric symmetries. The results are compared to ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy and variable temperature x-ray …
From Twisted Supersymmetry To Orbifold Lattices, Simon Catterall
From Twisted Supersymmetry To Orbifold Lattices, Simon Catterall
Physics - All Scholarship
We show how to derive the supersymmetric orbifold lattices of Cohen et al. \cite{Cohen:2003xe,Cohen:2003qw} and Kaplan et al. \cite{Kaplan:2005ta} by direct discretization of an appropriate twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We examine in detail the four supercharge two dimensional theory and the theory with sixteen supercharges in four dimensions. The continuum limit of the latter theory is the well known Marcus twist of {\cal N}=4 Yang-Mills. The lattice models are gauge invariant and possess one exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing.

Electron Beam Characterization Of Carbon Nanostructures, Eric Samuel Mandell
Electron Beam Characterization Of Carbon Nanostructures, Eric Samuel Mandell

Atom-thick carbon nanostructures represent a class of novel materials that are of interest to those studying carbon's role in fossil fuel, hydrogen storage, scaled-down electronics, and other nanotechnology. Electron microscope images of "edge-on" graphene sheets show linear image features due to the projected potential of the sheets. Here, intensity profiles along these linear features can measure the curvature of the sheet, as well as the shape of the sheet (i.e. hexagonal, triangular). Also, electron diffraction powder profiles calculated for triangular graphene sheet shapes show a broadening of the low-frequency edge of diffraction rings, in comparison to those calculated for hexagonal …

Slow-Light Fourier Transform Interferometer, Zhimin Shi, Robert W. Boyd, Ryan M. Camacho, Praveen K. Vudyasetu, John C. Howell
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We describe a new type of Fourier transform (FT) interferometer in which the tunable optical delay between the two arms is realized by using a continuously variable slow-light medium instead of a moving arm as in a conventional setup. The spectral resolution of such a FT interferometer exceeds that of a conventional setup of comparable size by a factor equal to the maximum group index of the slow-light medium. The scheme is experimentally demonstrated by using a rubidium atomic vapor cell as the tunable slow-light medium, and the spectral resolution is enhanced by a factor of approximately 100.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering Off The Neutron, M. Mazouz, Timothy Holmstrom, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
The present experiment exploits the interference between the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and the Bethe-Heitler processes to extract the imaginary part of DVCS amplitudes on the neutron and on the deuteron from the helicity-dependent D(e⃗,e′γ)X cross section measured at Q2=1.9 GeV2 and xB=0.36. We extract a linear combination of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) particularly sensitive to Eq, the least constrained GPD. A model dependent constraint on the contribution of the up and down quarks to the nucleon spin is deduced.

We investigate formation and evolution of galactic disks immersed in assembling live DM halos. Models have been evolved from cosmological initial conditions and represent the collapse of an isolated density perturbation. The baryons include gas participating in star formation (SF) and stars with the energy feedback onto the ISM. We find that (1) the triaxial halo figure tumbling is insignificant and the angular momentum (J) is channeled into the internal circulation, while the baryonic collapse is stopped by the centrifugal barrier; (2) density response of the (disk) baryons is out of phase with DM, thus washing out the …

The possible origins of a low density of defect states within the highest occupied molecular orbital to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap are suggested for regioregular poly(3- hexylthiophene). A number of chemical defects, impurities, and structural defects could contribute to features in photoemission for regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), observed within the highest occupied molecular orbital to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene).

We present Spitzer mid-infrared spectra of 12 Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies over the 5-38 μm region. We compare the spectral characteristics of this sample to those of 58 Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies from the Spitzer archives. An analysis of the spectral shapes, the silicate 10 μm feature and the emission-line fluxes have enabled us to characterize the mid-IR properties of Seyfert 1.8/1.9s. We find that the EWs of the 10 μm silicate feature are generally weak in all Seyfert galaxies, as previously reported by several studies. The few Seyfert galaxies in this sample that show …

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3 < pT / M < 0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Inclusive dijet and trijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and low Bjorken x, 10-4 < xBj < 10-2. The data were taken at the HERA ep collider with centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Jets were identified in the hadronic centre-of-mass (HCM) frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of dijet and trijet differential cross sections are presented as functions of Q2, xBj, jet transverse energy, and jet pseudorapidity. As a further examination of low-xBj dynamics, multi-differential cross sections as functions of the jet correlations in transverse momenta, azimuthal angles, and pseudorapidity are also presented. Calculations at O (αs3) generally describe the trijet data well and improve the description of the dijet data compared to the calculation at O (αs2). © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Charge Effects In Bilayer Electric Transport, Christopher Czech
Charge Effects In Bilayer Electric Transport, Christopher Czech
All Theses
The mathematical isomorphism between the layer index in a bilayer system and the spin index in a spin-polarized system is used to draw an analogy between phenomena that occur in the two systems as a result of the electron-electron (e-e) interaction. First, the classical case of the Coulomb drag, a phenomenon resulting from momentum transfer through e-e collisions, is reviewed for both bilayer systems and spin-polarized systems. Then, the spin-backflow phenomenon, a result of the interaction-induced changes in the local quasiparticle energy that affects the charge transport in spin-polarized systems is presented. Finally, the iso-spin correlation is exploited to establish …
Solid Phase Crystallization Of Vanadium Dioxide Thin Films And Characterization Through Scanning Electron Microscopy, Felipe Rivera
Solid Phase Crystallization Of Vanadium Dioxide Thin Films And Characterization Through Scanning Electron Microscopy, Felipe Rivera
Theses and Dissertations
Crystalline films of vanadium dioxide were obtained through thermal annealing of amorphous vanadium dioxide thin films sputtered on silicon dioxide. An annealing process was found that yielded polycrystalline vanadium dioxide thin films, semi-continuous thin films, and films of isolated single-crystal particles. Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) was used to characterize and study the phase and the orientation of the vanadium dioxide crystals obtained, as well as to diferentiate them from other vanadium oxide stoichiometries that may have formed during the annealing process. There was no evidence of any other vanadium oxides present in the prepared samples. Indexing of the crystals for …
Characterization Of Metalferroelectric-Insulator-Semiconductor Structures Based On Ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett Polyvinylidene Fluoride Copolymer Films For Nondestructive Random Access Memory Applications, Timothy J. Reece
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ferroelectric field effect transistors (FeFETs) have attracted much attention recently because of their ability to combine high speed, low power consumption, and fast nondestructive readout with the potential for high density nonvolatile memory. The polarization of the ferroelectric is used to switch the channel at the silicon surface between states of high and low conductance.
Among the ferroelectric thin films used in FET devices; the ferroelectric copolymer of Polyvinylidene fluoride, PVDF (C2H2F2), with trifluoroethylene, TrFE (C2HF3), has distinct advantages, including low dielectric constant, low processing temperature, low cost and compatibility …

How To Hunt A Wild Neutrino, Janet Conrad
IMSA Great Minds Program ®
Of all of the particles which make up matter, the neutrino is the most mysterious. Remnants of the big bang, neutrinos are everywhere -- up in your attic, out in the cornfields, deep in the farthest galaxies. Catching them has always been a problem. But recently we have discovered one of their tricks. They can change their spots -- from one type into another! This talk will discuss neutrinos, how to catch them, and in the context of the research at Fermilab.
New Multiwavelength Variability And Optical Microvariability Investigations Of X-Ray And Radio Selected Blazars, Margaret Angela Osterman
New Multiwavelength Variability And Optical Microvariability Investigations Of X-Ray And Radio Selected Blazars, Margaret Angela Osterman
Physics and Astronomy Dissertations
The extreme AGN known as blazars can be classified based on their spectral properties into X-ray and radio selected objects, known as XBLs and RBLs, respectively. In this work, the results of new multiwavelength campaigns are presented for two XBLs and two RBLs. Each campaign contains simultaneous observations in the radio, optical, and X-ray regimes. A campaign on a third RBL was completed using near-simultaneous archival radio, optical/IR, and gamma-ray data. The simultaneous multiwavelength behavior exhibited in each campaign was analyzed by examining the multiwavelength variability and using spectral analysis. Observations of prominent optical microvariability were quantitatively analyzed. Previously published …

Slowmo: A Search For Nearby Stars, Misty Adana Brown
Physics and Astronomy Theses
I report on suspected nearby stars with proper motions 1.0 arcsec > μ ≥ 0.5 arcsec/yr in the southern sky (DEC = −90° to 00°). This sample of slow-motion (SLOWMO) stars complements the work of Jao (2004), who reported on faster moving stars with μ ≥ 1.0 arcsec/yr in the entire sky for his doctoral dissertation, and the work of Finch (2007), who uncovered stars moving slower than 0.5 arcsec/yr between declinations −90° and −47°. Characterizations of SLOWMO systems include trigonometric parallaxes, optical and infrared photometry. For stars without trigonometric parallaxes, colors and apparent magnitudes are used to calculate photometric distance …

Relation between the elastic modulus and the diameter (D) of ZnOnanowires was elucidated using a model with the calculated ZnOsurface stresses as input. We predict for ZnOnanowires due to surface stress effect: (1) when D>20nm, the elastic modulus would be lower than the bulk modulus and decrease with the decreasing diameter, (2) when 20nm>D>2nm, the nanowires with a longer length and a wurtzite crystal structure could be mechanically unstable, and (3) when D<2nm, the elastic modulus would be higher than that of the bulk value and increase with a decrease in nanowire diameter.
Physical Properties Of Unconventional Superconductors, Valentina Anatolyevna Kuznetsova
Physical Properties Of Unconventional Superconductors, Valentina Anatolyevna Kuznetsova
Doctoral Dissertations
In the following development, we attempt to obtain basic physical properties of majority of unconventional superconductors through a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type weak-coupling approach. The method we adopted in our study is model-independent. The weak-coupling approach depends only on the symmetry of the coupling, not on its origin. It is known that a general analysis of physical properties of unconventional superconductors is possible, but has not been done yet. The goal of our work is to develop and test such analysis, using available experimental data.
Since paramagnetic limiting for spin-singlet superconductors can be suppressed in superconductors with broken inversion symmetry of crystal lattice, …

[1] Results from the first Sun-to-Earth coupled numerical model developed at the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling are presented. The model simulates physical processes occurring in space spanning from the corona of the Sun to the Earth's ionosphere, and it represents the first step toward creating a physics-based numerical tool for predicting space weather conditions in the near-Earth environment. Two 6- to 7-d intervals, representing different heliospheric conditions in terms of the three-dimensional configuration of the heliospheric current sheet, are chosen for simulations. These conditions lead to drastically different responses of the simulated magnetosphere-ionosphere system, emphasizing, on the one …

We report analytic formulas for the elements of the e 2 X 2 cross-spectral density matrix of a stochastic electromagnetic anisotropic beam propagating through the turbulent atmosphere with the help of vector integration. From these formulas the changes in the spectral density (spectrum), in the spectral degree of polarization, and in the spectral degree of coherence of such a beam on propagation are determined. As an example, these quantities are calculated for a so-called anisotropic electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating in the isotropic and homogeneous atmosphere. In particular, it is shown numerically that for a beam of this class, unlike …
