Inclusive dijet and trijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and low Bjorken x, 10-4 < xBj < 10-2. The data were taken at the HERA ep collider with centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Jets were identified in the hadronic centre-of-mass (HCM) frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of dijet and trijet differential cross sections are presented as functions of Q2, xBj, jet transverse energy, and jet pseudorapidity. As a further examination of low-xBj dynamics, multi-differential cross sections as functions of the jet correlations in transverse momenta, azimuthal angles, and pseudorapidity are also presented. Calculations at O (αs3) generally describe the trijet data well and improve the description of the dijet data compared to the calculation at O (αs2). © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3 < pT / M < 0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The g factor of the 2+1 state of 170Hf was measured by perturbed γ-γ angular correlation in a static external magnetic field. The result, g(2+1) = 0.28(5), extends the systematics of g factors of even-even Hf isotopes to N = 98 and enables a better test of theoretical models. The g(2+1) experimental values of these isotopes exhibit a remarkable constancy as a function of neutron number. This phenomenon, which was also observed for other isotopic chains in the Gd–W range, is explained in terms of a recently proposed empirical …

Implementation Of Uncertainty Propagation In Triton/Keno: To Support The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Charlotta Sanders, Denis Beller
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
Monte Carlo methods are beginning to be used for three-dimensional fuel depletion analyses to compute various quantities of interest, including isotopic compositions of used fuel.1 The TRITON control module, available in the SCALE 5.1 code system, can perform three dimensional (3-D) depletion calculations using either the KENO V.a or KENO-VI Monte Carlo transport codes, as well as the two-dimensional (2- D) NEWT discrete ordinates code. For typical reactor systems, the neutron flux is not spatially uniform. For Monte Carlo simulations, this results in non-uniform statistical uncertainties in the computed reaction rates. For spatial regions where the flux is low, e.g., …

Reactor Campaign (TRP)
Monte Carlo methods are used to compute fluxes or dose rates over large areas using mesh tallies. For problems that demand that the uncertainty in each mesh cell be less than some set maximum, computation time is controlled by the cell with the largest uncertainty. This issue becomes quite troublesome in deep-penetration problems, and advanced variance reduction techniques are required to obtain reasonable uncertainties over large areas.
In this project the MAVRIC sequence will be evaluated along with the Monte Carlo engine Monaco to investigate its effectiveness and usefulness in facility shielding and dose rate analyses. A previously MCNP-evaluated cask …

Phenomenological Model For Infrared Emissions From High-Explosive Detonation Fireballs, Kevin C. Gross
Phenomenological Model For Infrared Emissions From High-Explosive Detonation Fireballs, Kevin C. Gross
Theses and Dissertations
Time-resolved infrared spectra were recently collected via a Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS) from the detonation fireballs of two types of conventional military munitions (CMM) as well as uncased TNT and four types of enhanced novel explosives (ENEs). The CMM spectra are dominated by continuum emission, and a single-temperature Planckian distribution, modified for atmospheric attenuation, captures most of the variation in the data. Some evidence of selective emission is identified by systematic patterns in the fit residuals. The behavior of these systematic residuals affords a distinction between the two types of CMMs studied. The uncased TNT and ENE spectra appear strongly influenced …

The production of energetic neutrons in ep collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The neutron energy and pT2 distributions were measured with a forward neutron calorimeter and tracker in a 40 pb-1 sample of inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data and a 6 pb-1 sample of photoproduction data. The neutron yield in photoproduction is suppressed relative to DIS for the lower neutron energies and the neutrons have a steeper pT2 distribution, consistent with the expectation from absorption models. The distributions are compared to HERA measurements of leading protons. The neutron energy and transverse-momentum distributions in DIS …

Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Since the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 there has been apprehension that the United States may be ill-prepared to prevent future terrorist events. One source of concern is that a Radioactive Dispersion Device (RDD) could be detonated at a vulnerable target anywhere in the nation. A RDD, also known as a “dirty bomb, is a conventional explosive packed with radioactive material. The explosion could disperse radioactive material over a wide area. The target could be an icon associated with American democracy and government, critical systems and infrastructure, a water supply, a nuclear power plant and others. Such an event …

During the Cold War, the United States conducted over 1000 nuclear weapons tests. Of those, 928 took place at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). One hundred tests were in the atmosphere and 921 underground at the 1375 square mile site located 65 north of Las Vegas. Nevada Test Site Oral History Project (NTSOHP) researchers have conducted over 300 hours of interviews with individuals affiliated with and impacted by the NTS, documenting the diversity of experience among many communities of voices including: weapons scientists, test site officials, laborers, contractors and support personnel, the military, American Indians, communities downwind of the NTS, …

Session 1 - Rationalizing The Home Front: The Cold War, The Nevada Test Site, And Radiation Exposure, Leisl A. Carr
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Beginning in 1953, radiation exposure and its effects became a hotly contested issue between the government, members of communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), and researchers within the national scientific community. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), concerned about maintaining a continental testing facility and aware that atomic testing would impact communities surrounding the NTS, sent representatives to areas potentially affected by fallout to instruct and reassure the affected public. How government officials perceived neighboring communities and how these communities perceived these representatives of the government often determined public responses to the atomic testing program. The story of radiation monitors …

Mean values and differential distributions of event-shape variables have been studied in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The kinematic range is 80 < Q2 < 20 480 GeV2 and 0.0024 < x < 0.6, where Q2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The data are compared with a model based on a combination of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations with next-to-leading-logarithm corrections and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative power corrections. The power-correction method provides a reasonable description of the data for all event-shape variables studied. Nevertheless, the lack of consistency of the determination of αs and of the non-perturbative parameter of the model, over(α0, -), suggests the importance of higher-order processes that are not yet included in the model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Higher-Order Soft Gluon Corrections In Single Top Quark Production At The Cern Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Higher-Order Soft Gluon Corrections In Single Top Quark Production At The Cern Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Faculty and Research Publications
I present a calculation of soft-gluon corrections to single top-quark production in pp collisions at the LHC via the standard model partonic processes in the t and s channels and associated top quark and W boson production. Higher-order soft-gluon corrections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO) are calculated at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. The soft-gluon corrections in the s channel and in tW production are large and dominant, while in the t channel they are not a good approximation of the complete QCD corrections.

Measurements Of Correlated Pair Momentum Distributions In -3he(E,E',P,P)N With Clas, Hovhannes Baghdasaryan
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) Short Range Correlations (SRC) represent a valuable part of the nuclear wave function. Improved knowledge of SRC will give us a better understanding of nuclear matter and nuclear interactions in extreme conditions. A study of the effects of short-range correlations using the 3He(e, e'pp)n reaction measured at Jefferson Lab is presented. Two different approaches were selected to investigate SRC. The first approach consists of the kinematics when we investigate the two active protons and neutron is the spectator (was not involved in the interaction). This kinematics dominates by Final State Interactions which are reasonably …

The authors present partial-ion-yield experiments on the methyl chloride molecule excited in the vicinity of the Cl2p and C1s inner shells. A large number of fragments, cations produced by dissociation or recombination processes, as well as anionic species, have been detected. Although the spectra exhibit different intensity distributions depending on the core-excited atom, general observations include strong site-selective fragmentation along the C–Cl bond axis and a strong intensity dependence of transitions involving Rydberg series on fragment size.

Secondary Neutron-Production Cross Sections From Heavy-Ion Interactions Between 230 And 600 Mev/Nucleon, Lawrence H Heilbronn
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Nuclear Engineering
Secondary neutron-production cross-sections have been measured from interactions of 230 MeV/nucleon He, 400 MeV/nucleon N, 400 MeV/nucleon Kr, 400 MeV/nucleon Xe, 500 MeV/nucleon Fe, and 600 MeV/nucleon Ne interacting in a variety of elemental and composite targets. We report the double-differential production cross sections, angular distributions, energy spectra, and total cross sections from all systems. Neutron energies were measured using the time-of-flight technique, and were measured at laboratory angles between 5° and 80°. The spectra exhibit behavior previously reported in other heavy-ion-induced neutron production experiments; namely, a peak at forward angles near the energy corresponding to the beam velocity, with …

Evaluation Of Cs/Sr Waste Form For Long Term Storage And Disposal, Gary Cerefice, Longzhou Ma
Waste Forms Campaign (TRP)
The goal of this project is to examine two potential concerns regarding the long-term performance of a proposed cesium/ strontium waste form. To facilitate long-term storage, up to 300 years, the disposal containers will need to be able to survive for the entire storage interval. The first aspect of the project will explore the potential interaction of the aluminosilicate waste form with the storage canister materials to determine if there is any corrosion or chemical interaction concerns for the storage of the materials.
At the end of the storage interval, most of the 137Cs in the waste form will have …

Investigation Of Optical Spectroscopy Techniques For On-Line Materials Accountability In The Solvent Extraction Process, Gary Cerefice, Kenneth Czerwinski
Safeguards Campaign (TRP)
The goal of this project is to evaluate the application of these analytical techniques to the on-line, real-time measurement of the actinide elements in the process streams of a solvent extraction process, with particular attention to the UREX+ and PUREX processes. Based on the experience gained through this effort, engineers will have the information necessary to decide if these technologies should be advanced to the prototype stage and tested at the pilot plant level. Through the experimental work planned as part of this effort, researchers will also develop a better understanding of the chemical interactions of the actinide elements, providing …

Fuels Campaign (TRP)
This project will examine inert fuels containing ZrO2 and MgO as the inert matrix. Ceramics with this inert matrix, Ce, U and eventually Pu will be synthesized and examined. While the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative focus is on inert fuels with Pu as the fissile component, this task will perform initial laboratory experiments with Ce and U. The initial work with Ce will be performed early in the project with results used as a basis for U studies. Reactor physics calculations will be used to examine suitable quantities of burnable poisons from the candidate elements Gd, Er, or Hf. …
Impact Of The Synthesis Process On Structure Properties For Afci Fuel Candidates, Kenneth Czerwinski
Impact Of The Synthesis Process On Structure Properties For Afci Fuel Candidates, Kenneth Czerwinski
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
Synthesis of actinium mononitrides using carbothermic reduction of the corresponding oxides has a few outstanding issues, including the formation of secondary phases such as oxides and carbides and low densities of the final product. Furthermore the requirement of a high process temperature at 1700°C, for more than 12 hours is also a drawback particularly for Americium-bearing samples. Therefore, it is important to explore the use of other possible routes to synthesize actinide mononitrides.
A low temperature process is used in this research to produce actinide mononitrides using a fluoride route in which the first step is to mix the actinide …
