Characterization Of The Effects Of Radiation On Skeletal And Smooth Muscle Cells, Lori Caldwell, Charles Harding, Jr Dennison, Elizabeth Vargis

Muscular atrophy is a serious issue for extended spaceflight. Understanding and preventing the role of ionizing radiation in skeletal muscle loss would preserve the strength and endurance of astronauts and enable longer duration space travel and exploration. Irradiation was performed in the USU material physics group's Space Suvivability Test Chamber. C2C12 and CRL-1999 cells were exposed to dosages ranging from 0.5 - 36.8 Gy. Cell viability and growth rate were measured immediately following irradiation.

It is a real challenge to reproduce various space environment conditions in ground-based facilities for testing of external space system materials and elements. This is due to the variety and complexity of the space environment conditions and their effects on materials and structures. The reliability of test results depends on accurate simulation of the critical factors and effects of the space environment for a particular mission. The main objectives of the simulation testing are to get the test results that are adequate to the material durability and functional behavior in a space environment.

Wireless Antenna Detection Of Electrostatic Discharge Events, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Jun 2018

Wireless Antenna Detection Of Electrostatic Discharge Events, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Conference Proceedings

Wireless intra-spacecraft communication technology is being developed as a weight-saving and design-simplifying measure for signal transfer on space missions. One consideration for this new technology is its interaction with space-environment induced electrostatic discharges (ESD). The short time scales of spacecraft ESD events results in broad frequency signals that can interact with wireless antennae. These interactions present a source of signal noise. However, they may also present a possibility of in-flight wireless ESD monitoring.

We present laboratory measurements of arcing on common spacecraft insulators using commercially available single band 2.4 GHz and dual band 2.4/5.8 GHz Wi-Fi antennas. These wireless detections …

At extremely high altitudes, spacecraft are submitted to solar radiation of varying charged-particle fluxes. This radiation can induce charging of the spacecraft itself, creating unwanted and disastrous effects on electrical components from electrostatic breakdown or arc-induced damage of structural or optical components. To prevent these effects, space-like environment tests are performed on materials to understand how they interact with the space plasma environment.

Radiation Damage Threshold Of Satellite Cots Components: Raspberry Pi Zero For Opal Cubesat, Jonh Mojica Decena, Brian Wood, Ryan J. Martineau, Jr Dennison, Michael Tayor

The use of inexpensive microprocessors or commercial of the shelf (COTS) components is one of the most common cost-saving methods in the constructions of CubeSats. Design of electronics that can maintain full functionality over the duration of the mission requires careful determination of the space radiation environment and total ionizing dose (TID) delivered to the components. Larger, more expensive or longer mission satellites tend to use more expensive components than the ones used in CubeSat to assure reliability. Radiation survivability of a Raspberry Pi Zero was studied with the USU Space Survivability Test Chamber using 0.2 to 2.5 MeV beta …

The spatial resolution of Pulsed Electroacoustic (PEA) measurements can be limited by the acoustic thickness of the coupling material coupling the sample to the detector assembly. Our investigations studied the effect of adhesive material and thickness to optimize the quality of the PEA signal.
